Mauricebranagh··on Equilibrium Effects of Pay Transparency
Doesn't seem to work for CEO pay :-)
Mauricebranagh··on DraftKings: a $21B SPAC betting it can hide its black market operations
Betting on the horses is a very Irish thing to do grin

You'd rather have illegal off course betting ala Peaky Blinders or like IRL my Great Great Great Uncle ran in Birmingham (does make watching peaky Blinders interesting)

Perfectly legal gaming operations outside of the USA have been considered illicit and had employees arrested.

The US does seem to have a lot of puritan hang-ups not helped by local gambling monopolys.

Surprised that draft kings don't go with one of the UK online gaming firms.

Mauricebranagh··on IndexedDB is completely broken in latest Safari
I thought they where Ubuntu running on mac hardware.
Mauricebranagh··on It’s hard work to make ordering groceries online so easy
I know Sainsburys was trialing back then, I knew one of the developers on the project at BT.

One of our team members was an alpha tester, and one delivery he got was a pallet of salad cream instead of just one bottle.

Mauricebranagh··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Not initially anyway its not all about money
Mauricebranagh··on Tricks of Trench Warfare (2020)
Sniper rifles in ww1 where custom conversions of the standard infantry rifles or in the early war actual hunting rifles.
Mauricebranagh··on Tricks of Trench Warfare (2020)
Shotguns where more for trench raiding along with improvised clubs etc

Mauricebranagh··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
I did when my previous place made me redundant, I didn't need to jump into the first job and I could claim unemployment whist waiting to.

It well be more experienced people though and you will need enough $ to do this.

Mauricebranagh··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Seconded one of my regrets was not really going for a place on a round the world boat race a few years ago and taking a sabbatical to do the whole thing.

Id just been diagnosed which a chronic illness and though it would have been fair on the rest of the crew.

Mauricebranagh··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Its "class" we are talking about here and it does exist in the US compare Bill Gates vs Steve Jobs and Woz.
Mauricebranagh··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
And technically upper class is doesn't need to work and can live of investments / property.

Its a bit more complex in the UK ABc1 is middle but their are social distinctions dependant on job not income.

For example A Plumber Miner or train driver might make more than an engineer but would be working class.

Basically what sort of honour would you get for doing charity work is a good marker

Mauricebranagh··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Its pretty common for ordinary middle class kids - and remember in the UK a degree is three years not the US four years (or even longer in Europe)

Bit harder now post Brexit though

Mauricebranagh··on Tricks of Trench Warfare (2020)
Yes standing exposed on top would expose you to fire from the support trenches.
Mauricebranagh··on The Surveilled Student
I am pretty sure I got nocked back for a job at EBAY because I have an atypical career path.
Mauricebranagh··on AWS Frankfurt incident
Video cameras maybe or sensors that detect products of burning :-)

I would hope that they do audit people in and out so i case of accidents you can account for everyone.

Oh and these would be trained people

Mauricebranagh··on AWS Frankfurt incident
That was my point and large industrial sites quiet often have their own internal fire service.
Mauricebranagh··on AWS Frankfurt incident
Bit surprising that they didn't override this as there was no fire and take the hit from the over temp.

Also they didn't have breathing gear (and trained staff) so you could go in and restart without waiting and also in case of an accident being able to try and rescue people.

Back when worked in RnD for the lab where we could have had a Freon leak we had breathing gear just outside and some people trained to use it

Mauricebranagh··on The Surveilled Student
Good luck getting past the gate keepers for most companies then.
Mauricebranagh··on Husband of Amazon employee sentenced to prison for insider trading Amazon stock
Or maybe someone at amazon tipped the SEC off

Depends did Papa go to ENA with the right people.

Why do you think that serious white collar crime shouldn't involve jail time.

Mauricebranagh··on Developers can't fix bad management (2020)
Yeh Back in 94 I and another developer got flown up to Edinburg and delivered using RAD/DSDM in a month what a another traditional team said would take 2 years.

One of the other ideas at the times was a custom BT version of HTML - that got stamped on very had by the Labs thank god.

Mauricebranagh··on Developers can't fix bad management (2020)
Inexperienced developers can be delusional especially if they see their role as 100% banging out JIRA tickets
Mauricebranagh··on Developers can't fix bad management (2020)
Then the lead developer is the manager
Mauricebranagh··on Facebook extends its work-at-home policy to most employees
A lot of consumer production was halted or radically slowed during ww2. I suspect a University Don was insulated from a lot of those shortages
Mauricebranagh··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
The hotel /travel industry is probably the worst complainant as those industry's do a lot of sketchy stuff.

As does the insurance industry ever wonder why the UK insurance industry went all in on cuddly mascots - one factor was googles clamp down on black hat techniques simples

Mauricebranagh··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
No you have to bribe them :-)
