MattGrommes··on Robust autonomy emerges from self-play
What I always wonder when this happens is, did I actually come up with something witty in a dream or did my brain just generate the feeling of having come up with something witty without actually having a cause.

I had a dream once where I had 3 really good ideas for a particular product but when I woke up I couldn't remember the 3rd and best idea. Then I started wondering if there actually was a 3rd idea or did my dream just skip to the "That's a great idea" stage with no actual idea, leaving me with just the feeling.

Brains are weird, dreams doubly so.

MattGrommes··on Software development topics I've changed my mind on
At a previous employer I tried to implement a Just Jar where people had to put a dollar in every time they said "Just do...". It didn't last because the boss was the biggest offender.
MattGrommes··on The Inefficiency of Greed: How DeepSeek Exposed Silicon Valley's Tech Bros
Not everybody is free to do what they want in that way. Tech is a pretty hostile place for a lot of people so they make a go of it and then leave. Not wanting to put up with a hostile work environment is not being "free". I know a lot of people who would have preferred to stay in tech but were pushed out or prioritized their mental and physical health.
MattGrommes··on California law enforcement misused state databases more than 7k times in 2023
Interesting. How does pressure regulator relate to humans? It seems like any random civilian being able to gun down dozens of people is pretty out of regulation.
MattGrommes··on California law enforcement misused state databases more than 7k times in 2023
I don't understand why if they used the words 'well-regulated militia' that so many pro-gun people argue that what _they actually meant_ was "any random person". They had words for that and they chose the words 'well-regulated militia'.
MattGrommes··on Japan's original decluttering guru (no, not that one)
Oh boy. Take your upvote and go.
MattGrommes··on I designed a Dieter Rams-inspired iPhone dock
I've also been shocked at how little post-processing prints off a Bambu printer need. They're pretty amazing machines, right out of the box.
MattGrommes··on Qualcomm Wants to Buy Intel
Qualcomm consists of at least 4 lawyers for every engineer. If this happens expect a lot more lawsuits making anything involving hardware much more expensive for everybody.
MattGrommes··on The lie of music discovery algorithms
Some people like particular instruments. My son plays the bassoon and loves trying to look up who plays on a song if he hears one.
MattGrommes··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
I heard AOC talk about this and it does make sense. There's just a lot to learn about how things actually get done and only so much time in the day. It's not as simple as "Write bill, pass bill, job done". You have to figure out who are the people who actually have power in an agency, what their priorities are, how to word the bills so they will actually achieve what you want, etc. There's a lot to it.

MattGrommes··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
> Why is it some shock-horror thing that people worked less?

Exactly. If I have to have 3 jobs, then with this money I "only" work 2 jobs, I'm working less but almost certainly have a better quality of life.

MattGrommes··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
Some venues do this already and the scalpers buy an additional ticket to burn on themselves so they can get their customer in the gate. It just goes into the cost of doing business. I agree this is probably one of the best ways to stop scalpers but it's not foolproof.
MattGrommes··on From Infocom to 80 Days: An oral history of text games and interactive fiction
I loved the recent newsletter-turned-book '50 Years of Text Games' by Aaron Reed. It's a bunch of deep dives into a bunch of games from throughout history, most of which I hadn't heard of.

MattGrommes··on In one of the US's hottest deserts, utilities push gas rather than solar
Exactly. It's one thing to have objections to some climate policy, it's another to explicitly try to block future projects. God forbid we actually learn something and change our behavior in the future.
MattGrommes··on Linus Torvalds, the famous embroidery file converter developer
You haven't seen a weird file format until you've dealt with one of other embroidery formats, .dst. It's literally converted from an old paper tape format so it's like 21 bits per row, each bit indicates part of the length of the stitch so a 1 in place 0 means 1mm, place 1 means 3mm, then 9mm, -1, etc. The original format was holes in the tape and they just kept that idea for the past decades. You add all the 1s to see how long the stitch is. I had to write a converter in Go as my first Go project to integrate into a larger project and it was a trip.
MattGrommes··on What's worked in Computer Science: 1999 vs. 2015 (2015)
Also, Reading Mode in the sidebar of Chrome.

The days of square monitors and wall-to-wall text have been over for a while.

MattGrommes··on Mass timber is great, but it will not solve the housing shortage
Google 'missing middle'. There are tons of laws restricting what kind of homes can be built so we end up with whole swaths of cities being a single kind of home that is unaffordable and doesn't work for a lot of people.
MattGrommes··on Safe and reliable production changes, and how Rivian recently got this wrong
Those are very common practices and he's clear about saying "that probably means..." and "This seems like...". Seems like fine writing to me.
MattGrommes··on Should toggle button show its current state or the state to which it'll change? (2010)
One of the worst cases of this is the 'Airplane mode' toggle on a Kindle. Airplane mode turns off wifi but the icon is an airplane that says 'On' when airplane mode is on. When you click it, it turns to 'Off'. But what you really want to do is turn the wifi off and on, which is the opposite of the icon. 'On' means the wifi is off, 'Off' means the wifi is on. Terrible.
MattGrommes··on Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold
A friend hypothesized that a lot of Tesla drivers charge the same way they refilled their gas cars, by waiting until the last minute and supercharging back up to "full". This doesn't work when it's so cold so people need to learn to charge a little at a time.
MattGrommes··on Wind turbines are friendlier to birds than oil-and-gas drilling
Nobody wants to ban cats. A lot of people would like to keep them indoors though, which would be great for birds and also for the cats. I live on the southern edge of Portland, OR and coyotes make meals of a lot of people's precious fur-babies.
MattGrommes··on The big bet on "tiny homes" to fix homelessness
Even if that's the case, it's still better to get the people who want to get off the street into housing. Then you can move onto specific solutions for other people.
MattGrommes··on Pentagon fails audit for sixth year in a row
I've been reading The Declassification Engine (https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/fb013174-5d21-4ddb-ba64-...), a history of secrecy in the US, and it talks a lot about the culture of avoiding accountability in the military. They refuse to allow civilian oversight of any kind if they can avoid it and have since WWII. I doubt failing an audit is causing many people to lose sleep.

It's a good book, if completely infuriating, and worth reading.

MattGrommes··on Amazon begins testing Agility's Digit robot for warehouse work
That's a pretty big jump but doable, depending on what you want to do. Just wanting to move a robot arm doesn't involve a ton of math or anything hard beyond basically trigonometry. There's pretty good software for that and things like driving robots and mapping that help a lot (ROS or the Robots plugin for Grasshopper are great). It's best to have a real goal like a small robot arm that you're trying to program to do a task, or a little driving robot you want to get to drive from A to B. That will help you with some scaffolding to hang further learning on. Good luck!
MattGrommes··on Amazon reaches 10k Rivian electric delivery vans in US
Pickup trucks haven't always been bigger than parking places. We should be selling reasonably sized vehicles of all needed configurations, not these monstrosities.
MattGrommes··on The midwit home
I don't know if it's changed but I felt like a super genius a few years ago when I finally got my HA up and running on a pi, and I'm a linux person and former system admin. There's Home Assistant and Home Assistant Core, Docker or not Docker, install HACS or don't. Some things don't seem to work unless you're on a Docker container but then it's a pain to ssh in and find folders to install stuff. I really hope it's better now as my HA install has mysteriously died and I haven't had the heart to dig in and see what the issue is so I'm guessing I'm going to have to start from scratch.
MattGrommes··on TimeMaps (2017)
One thing I noticed when moving from San Diego to Albuquerque as a teen was how normal it was in Southern California to answer the question "How far is X?" with the answer "30 minutes". That was due to freeways and traffic rather than public transit but I definitely get the idea of these kinds of maps.
MattGrommes··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
An excellent video from Practical Engineering on this very question:

Why Construction Projects Always Go Over Budget https://youtu.be/dOe_6vuaR_s

MattGrommes··on SoftBank-backed pizza startup shuts down after raising $445M
I'll do it for only 10% of the investment.

"Instead of giving them $445M, give me $44M and then don't do the pizza thing. You'll save $400M. You can't afford not to give me this money."

MattGrommes··on Electric cars prove we need to rethink brake lights
My 2020 Bolt does the right thing also. I only wish the lights would stay on while I'm stopped at a light but that's minor.
