MattBearman··on Test versions of IE from 6 through 11 and Microsoft Edge using virtual machines
My stats show that this month (Aug 2015) Microsoft Edge is about 0.9% of total, and about 1.2% of Windows
MattBearman··on Ask HN: How Should I Apply Thermal Paste?
Interesting, as ArcticSilver was my paste of choice, and my method was based on what they used to recommend, it seems things have changed in the last 10 years - I'd probably go with what the ArcticSilver instructions say.

As for using gloves, you won't add an air pocket, as the gloves are only used for applying a really thin coating to the heatsink. By really thin, I mean just enough to be visible on the heatsink, while still being able to see the heatsink surface through the thermal paste. That should be enough to fill any gaps in the heatsink surface.

MattBearman··on Ask HN: How Should I Apply Thermal Paste?
It's been about 10 years since I built a PC, but I always did the following, and never had any cooling issues - in fact, I got quite good overclocking results:

Using plastic gloves (or just put a plastic bag over your hand) spread a REALLY thin layer over the cooler using your finger. This is simply just to fill any small grooves in the coolers surface. If you lap your cooler you don't need to do this.

Using a credit card spread a layer around 1mm thick on CPU, the main thing here is to just try and cover the whole area of the CPU that comes into contact with the cooler.

The most important thing is not to fret too much about this. Once you've put it all together, run a stress test and keep an eye on the CPU temp, if it goes too high, just clean the paste off and try again :)

MattBearman··on Airbnb Horror Story Points to Need for Precautions
I agreed with you up until "Instructing to call the police was definitely the best possible course of action". I really think AirBnB should have called the police, instead of shifting that responsibility. The article even says that they'll be making sure all staff know to contact the police directly in future cases like this.

If they did they'd have to wrap it a <blink> tag. Anything else would just be sacrilege
MattBearman··on Ember.js 2.0 Released
The post says you should use Ember Data 2.0.0-beta.1, and the official Ember Data 2.0 will be coming soon
MattBearman··on Ask HN: What do you do when an homeless ask you money?
Maybe it's a UK/US thing, as I know card payments are much more ubiquitous over here, but I very rarely have any cash on me. I never need it, and I know its the same for a lot of other people in the UK.
MattBearman··on Unique Gameplay Got Carl Rejected from the App Store

MattBearman··on Does a bug tracker with a floating web widget exist?
I've been running BugMuncher (http://bugmuncher.com) for about 4 years now, it captures user's browser/os info, path through the site, and allows them to include a highlighted screenshot of the webpage.

MattBearman··on We don’t trust drinking fountains anymore, and that’s bad for our health
I was intrigued by this, as I've never seen one in a London airport. A bit of googling reveals that there are no fountains at Gatwick (LGW) - https://twitter.com/gatwick_airport/status/70760011768410112

MattBearman··on Ask HN: Where is it OK on the Net to say “I'm a developer looking for work?”
My biggest client came through one of those posts, and I've had some other work through them as well.

Edit: My bad, thought you were talking about the Freelancer / Seeking Freelancer threads

MattBearman··on Virgin Media stores user passwords in plaintext?
Memorable word! That's the term I was trying to think of, thank you! If they called it that in the tweets this whole thing probably could have been avoided.
MattBearman··on Virgin Media stores user passwords in plaintext?
I think the pitchforks may have been lit a bit early here. The password all support staff can see is for phone verification, and is completely separate from the online log in password [0]

However, Virgin don't seem to have clarified if and how the online log in password is hashed.

I've noticed that as well
MattBearman··on The Maker of the Trollface Meme
I don't see the problem with this, now the image is popular and recognisable, companies are profiting from his creation. Why shouldn't he get a licensing fee for that?

MattBearman··on OnLive shuts down streaming games service, sells patents to Sony

Players who took part in that hybrid plan will still be able to play their

You may still be able to finish them.

MattBearman··on Carmageddon 1 debugging symbols dumped
There's some good method names in https://github.com/jeff-1amstudios/carmageddon1-symbol-dump/... - my favourite being CalcOpponentConspicuousnessWithAViewToCheatingLikeFuck
MattBearman··on Carmageddon 1 debugging symbols dumped
The Carmageddon 1 code to enable cheats was MUCH more offensive - IBETYOUCANTPRINTCUNT - because of course back then cheat codes were mostly printed in magazines.

I remember seeing that in a gaming mag, but it was C--T at the end, with a little note saying "we're sure you can figure out the missing letters"

MattBearman··on Has Travel Become Another Exercise in Narcissism?
I was about to ask the same, particularly as I'm currently traveling round Europe, and happen to be in Finland right now.
MattBearman··on iOS Version Stats
Interesting to see so many people are still using an iPhone 4s. I recently lost my 4s on a night out, but until that happened, I had no desire to upgrade, as it did everything I needed.

I suspect there's a lot of people like me who don't use their phones for 3D gaming, or other intensive tasks, so just have no need for a faster phone.

The only reason I've now upgraded to a 5s is because I couldn't buy a new 4s with more than 8 GB storage. Can't see myself upgrading from the 5s any time soon.

MattBearman··on Duke Engines' compact, lightweight valveless axial engine
No torque at low RPM is true, but I've not found it to be an issue. I use the engine in the same way as I do on my motorcycle - pretty much always above 4000.

The flooding issue I mentioned. It may have been different with the RX7, but the RX8 has a de-flood procedure that works 9 times out of 10. And failing that a bump start usually does it. Although I've never flooded mine, I'm always careful not to shut her down cold.

Oil usage in the real world is not much worse than many other performance cars, in fact it's better than most Honda S2000s. But for people who are not used to having to regularly top up oil I could see it being a ball ache.

MattBearman··on Duke Engines' compact, lightweight valveless axial engine
As an RX8 owner (and enthusiast), I can tell you Wankel Rotaries aren't categorically better, or worse. They have strengths and weaknesses:

- The vast majority of rotaries will need a full rebuild before 100k - worse

- They rev to 10,000 RPM with an unbelievably smooth power delivery - better

- I'm lucky to see 22 mpg - worse

- The engine is so small and light that the RX8 has perfect 50/50 weight distribution - better

- If you turn the engine off before it's warm it can flood - worse

- 231 bhp from a 1.3 litre engine? - better

Oh, and the noise - BETTER!

I do believe with more time and money invested the Wankel Rotary could be better than a standard Otto Cycle IC engine in every way. But electric is the future now, so that won't realistically happen.

MattBearman··on I miss Google wave
Two things surprised me about this:

1 - I can't believe its's been over 4 year since Wave launched (and flopped)

2 - In those 4 years, UI trends have changed a lot. The UI in that screenshot looks horribly dated.
