MartijnBraam··on Experimenting with Random() in CSS
Bokeh doesn't have different blur for different circles, it's always projecting the exact shape of the aperture.
MartijnBraam··on Why I email complete strangers
Oh I really enjoy it when I get random emails from people that have read my posts and have occasionally mailed maintainers of software projects that it is working perfectly for me. It's always a nice change of pace from bug reports.
MartijnBraam··on Cloning a Sennheiser BA2015 battery pack
Oh that looks incredibly similar, thanks for the tip!
MartijnBraam··on Cloning a Sennheiser BA2015 battery pack
Author here, the best solution I think would be just ripping the temperature sensor from the battery pack and soldering it to the contact in the microphone instead, then you can just pop in regular rechargable batteries and it'll work. No need to add lipos to this.
MartijnBraam··on Cloning a Sennheiser BA2015 battery pack
I'm glad most of my music gear isn't battery powered. I do have a painful amount of different camera chargers though...
MartijnBraam··on Linux from Scratch
Linux from scratch is quite a lot of fun, did it a decade ago and learned how to bootstrap a linux system after installing Archlinux got boring. Never went past the initial "get a working" system stage though.

Now I'm building LFS/BLFS again but hacked the Alpine package manager into it to actually be able to install multiple machines with this and crossed the point where I'm daily driving it on my laptop

MartijnBraam··on /dev/null is an ACID compliant database
Ah you've never encountered /dev/null not existing yet, so when you try to trash data it will actually create a normal file there so every other program that uses it will actually append that file.

Luckily it's usually a tmpfs

MartijnBraam··on Compare Single Board Computers
Uuh hackerboards has comparisons, for example https://hackerboards.com/compare/raspberry-pi-foundation-ras...
MartijnBraam··on DDoS Botnet Aisuru Blankets US ISPs in Record DDoS
This does happen, but it seems to depend on the ISP. In the Netherlands I've seen ISPs block the internet connectivity when they've detected infected devices, sometimes they send a letter before blocking and some ISPs seem to dump your internet connection in a captive portal. In all these cases it's been enough to call the ISP after finding the problem and you're connected again minutes later.
MartijnBraam··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
I'll have you know my grandma was using Linux just fine... was certainly a lot easier than windows changing random UI elements every time.
MartijnBraam··on The value of bringing a telephoto lens
I always bring my telephoto lens. Since moving to a full frame camera I'm using a 70-300 most of the time and I rarely want a wider lens, more often I wish I brought my 600mm instead.

I also brought a 85mm prime which has been a lot of fun, while at the same time I've been lugging around a 35mm prime and barely used it.

MartijnBraam··on Debian 13, Postgres, and the US/* time zones
You don't use them normally in the US, I've been referring to europe/amsterdam or europe/paris all my life in Linux installers and various equipment. I've never ever encountered netherlands/amsterdam or something like that.
MartijnBraam··on Magic Lantern Is Back
Magic lantern is amazing. I'm still hoping a project grows for the other camera brands since I only have Nikon and Panasonic cameras.
MartijnBraam··on Reverse Engineering All the Raspberry Pis
Both cores are actually ARM cores, but you can switch both cores to be RISC-V cores as well on boot.
MartijnBraam··on Don't pick weird subnets for embedded networks, use VRFs
Allocating a subnet is way further away from reality for most people than configuring one router feature on the router they're using.

There's also a lot of people that configure these devices (or linux routers) themselves but have never heard of VRFs, you got to learn about them somewhere so I just hope this helps some people :)

MartijnBraam··on Fire hazard of WHY2025 badge due to 18650 Li-Ion cells
Hah I also have a smartphone prototype here powered by a single 18650 and I've already seen one of them turn into a smoke machine because the holder has protruding pins and doesn't fit most protected cells...

Two 18650s also sounds like it would be heavy for a badge

MartijnBraam··on Telephone colophon: Or, how I overengineered my call audio (2020)
That's a lot of software setup for something that can easily be done in hardware. I've been over engineering things for years now.

For my mic I have also an sm57 feeding into a dbx286 hardware mic preamp and dynamics. Then feeding that into my audio interface for calls that also gives me a knob to mix in my mic into my headphone signal. This all gives me zero latency monitoring off all the gates and compression. Then for the output signal I have a seperate audio interface I use with all the web calling applications that sends the audio of all other people in the call to o another compressor that levels out their volumes. Then that is sent through a tc electronic multiband compressor unit to fix the really dull mics some people have. This is then mixed with the stereo output of all other applications on my audio interface again.

This way I have consistent audio no matter what OS I'm booted into at that moment.

MartijnBraam··on Turns out you can just hack any train in the USA
Maybe the CVE is being ignored because it's not such a big issue at all? It's already possible to cause a train to brake and make a disruption by pulling any of the emergency breaks inside it.
MartijnBraam··on Making My Own Hacktoberfest T-Shirts
It would be great if you could just order them. Mine are also falling apart... I've replaced them with FOSDEM shirts now
MartijnBraam··on Locally hosting an internet-connected server
I nat IPv6 on one of my servers because having seperate ipv6 for VMS but the same IPv4 has caused some issues with running mail servers and certificates. If only I could drop IPv4 completely
MartijnBraam··on Matrix.org Will Migrate to MAS
Afaik that's not related to this, that was already possible as a domain alias. I think that feature is called a delegation if I remember correctly.
MartijnBraam··on The highest-ranking personal blogs of Hacker News
Oh wow I did not expect to make it into the top 500 :D

It's only barely there at 480 but still.. that reminds me it's been too long since I've written a post.

MartijnBraam··on FOSS infrastructure is under attack by AI companies
Doesn't really work if crawlers are coming from the IP ranges of AWS and Azure etc...
MartijnBraam··on Canon EF and RF Lenses – All Autofocus Motors
What annoys me is that the AF-P could probably be supported on a lot more cameras, they did add it to the D3300 with a firmware update. They just didn't do it for more cameras...
MartijnBraam··on Canon EF and RF Lenses – All Autofocus Motors
All my nikon cameras focus with a semi transparent mirror on a specialized autofocus sensor. I even have an nikon film camera that has that cicuitry. You can't autofocus like mirrorless cameras with PDAF pixels in the main sensor with a mirror in the way.
MartijnBraam··on Canon EF and RF Lenses – All Autofocus Motors
Yeah the in-body motor thing is only for the older Nikon lenses, I don't think AF for that is still supported if you're using Z-mount adapters. Nikon seems to have a few similar AF motor technologies like the canon ones in this article.
MartijnBraam··on Canon EF and RF Lenses – All Autofocus Motors
I've always wanted to know how the various autofocus systems worked. This page is incredible. I wish there was another one with the Nikon autofocus systems since that's what I actually have.

I still have several lenses with autofocus that don't have an AF motor in it at all, the motor is in the camera body instead there's a tiny screw on the lens mount that transfers the motor rotation to the autofocus parts in the lense. This was very slow and noisy though on my cameras.

MartijnBraam··on Investigating an “evil” RJ45 dongle
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened
MartijnBraam··on Investigating an "evil" RJ45 dongle
Shorting almost any two of the communication lines of the flash chip will corrupt the communication enough that the ethernet controller thinks there's no flash installed at all.
MartijnBraam··on Investigating an “evil” RJ45 dongle
I came across the tweet about this "Evil" dongle and instantly recognized it as the exact same thing I worked on before... It's not evil, it's just annoying.

https://blog.brixit.nl/making-a-usb-ethernet-adapter-work-sr...

In my case I disabled the SPI flash module to have it not appear as a CD drive, the author of this post actually found some documentation about the SPI being optional. Funnily enough this post now also gives you all the tooling to make an actual evil RJ45 dongle by reflashing one :D
