MartijnBraam··on Building a Digital Audio Mixer
The Behringer XAir18 I used as inspiration for this adds an FPGA to the design so it really is fully software defined for the audio path. The only limitation is that behringer doesn't let you control any of it and adds a load of arbitrary limitations.

Hopefully more open audio mixers will take off a bit :)

MartijnBraam··on Making an USB Ethernet adapter work: hardware solutions to software problems
Oh of course it's MISO, makes sense. I'll update the post
MartijnBraam··on The year of Linux On Desktop^WMobile [video]
The power management model in phones is just radically different than desktops. Android can get a lot of battery life by suspending applications and tightly controlling application resource usage.
MartijnBraam··on Alpine Linux does not make the news
Both the package and the index is signed actually. That's why it still works when installing APK files directly
MartijnBraam··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
It could be simple, just hook the led to the reset line of the camera and you'll know if the camera is in use. Downside is that the led will blink on boot when linux probes the driver.
MartijnBraam··on The Liberty Phone
So this seems like it's exactly the same as the Librem 5 but renamed, a different eMMC chip and a different RAM chip?
MartijnBraam··on Unihiker, an $80 single-board PC with 2.8“ touchscreen, quad-core ARM Cortex-A35
Looks like it's based around the Rockchip RK3308 so it's likely not that bad. I'm sure this ships with some old patched vendor kernel but the SoC is already supported in mainline.

I've not gone through the other components but this probably doesn't take too much time to get to full mainline linux support.

MartijnBraam··on Desktop Linux is insecure
It's not heuristics, it's executable metadata
MartijnBraam··on Windows 11 calls a zip file a 'postcode file' in UK English
Windows is a goldmine of horrible translations. Since the introduction of the Windows Fax & Scan tool the dutch translation has the translation "Zoeken" for the button to start the scan. This translates back to "Search". In dutch we actually just call it scan, just like in english.
MartijnBraam··on NitroKey disappoints me
You don't even need the cell towers. You need _very_ good gps reception though, so outside without tall structures nearby. Then you have the issue that you need to keep the GPS active enough to keep the almanac updated. Which is usually not happening due to power management.
MartijnBraam··on NitroKey disappoints me
I have not even seen the HN comment section before writing this post
MartijnBraam··on NitroKey disappoints me
You don't need a third party, you just need to check your network traffic. The issue is that this request is not sent very often because this data is valid pretty long.

But it's basically just fetching https://xtrapath4.izatcloud.net/xtra2.bin with cron (or some other subdomain, depending on the SoC) and uploading that to the gps module so it has atmospheric corrections.

MartijnBraam··on NitroKey disappoints me
This is not even done by firmware, it's just part of qualcomms android userspace.
MartijnBraam··on NitroKey disappoints me
This is basically a copy of a signal broadcast worldwide by the GPS satellites. Just static data.
MartijnBraam··on NitroKey disappoints me
That's not a list of things allegedly sent. That's a list the lawyers put in a legal document to not get sued in case it happens.
MartijnBraam··on Audio engineer explains NPR's signature sound (2015)
I went with 19" rack gear [1] instead of Series 500.

As mic I use an SM57 which is fed into a DBX 286 compressor/de-esser/gate/enhancer and that signal is going to the videoconferencing application and is looped back into my headphones. The neat thing about the 286 is that it's fully analog so I can still hear myself with zero latency.

For the return signal from the videoconference I have a seperate audio interface that feeds into a Behringer Autocomp to compress practically all the dynamic range out of it and then it's going to a t.c. electric finalizer to do some multiband compression which fixes most midrange heavy gaming headsets.

This gear also has a dual purpose as outboard gear for audio production stuffs though, it's not just for the video conferencing.

MartijnBraam··on Taking a Good Picture of a PCB
Oh nice idea, I have not even tried using my tilt-shift adapter for this
MartijnBraam··on Taking a Good Picture of a PCB
If it's supported that would require buying the propriatary usb cable for this camera sadly. And I'd have to have the computer nearby.
MartijnBraam··on Taking a Good Picture of a PCB
Well the downside is that with my longer lenses I'd have to make a hole in the ceiling :D
MartijnBraam··on Taking a Good Picture of a PCB
That would make everything lit with the flashes look way too yellow. also it wouldn't make it a perfectly FFFFFF white mask around the board.
MartijnBraam··on Taking a Good Picture of a PCB
So far has not been needed. With the lens I'm using and the amount of light I can stop it down to f/8 and not have issues with blurry parts. For the macro pictures of components I need to look into focus stacking if I want to have both the board and the chip number in focus but that's not a big priority for me.
MartijnBraam··on Taking a Good Picture of a PCB
The issue with this is you need flat PCBs due to the depth of field of a flatbed scanner. Even in that article they had to remove components from it. That's quite annoying since most of the boards I have have stacked USB connectors.
MartijnBraam··on Ask HN: How’s the PinePhone?
Software support for the PinePhone is quite decent, but only if you count it as a feature phone mostly. It just doesn't have the battery life to act as an "connected 100% of the time on all platforms" device. Especially if you consider that a bunch of the closed platforms are downright hostile towards open clients.

PinePhone Pro is an upgrade specs wise, but the hardware has even more power management issues and the software support backing isn't really there, seems like development has slowed down a lot on it in general.

MartijnBraam··on A 3D-printed ethernet RJ45 clip to secure/repair/fix broken tab (2020)
Or... snip off the connector and crimp a new one on.
MartijnBraam··on Finding an SBC
That would require doing benchmarks for all the boards though, which is problematic since I don't have all the boards
MartijnBraam··on Finding an SBC
I have the data, just need to figure out how to filter it nicely. A bit annoying if you have a board with 5 ports with different speeds
MartijnBraam··on Finding an SBC
Defining shared busses is not an easy thing to solve though sadly. ideally you can just get a nice block diagram for each board but we also don't have the data for that.
MartijnBraam··on SourceHut terms of service updates, cryptocurrency projects to be removed
At that point it would be nonfree, a huge step to take

A pine rk3566 device with a camera?

It's great to have more people working on imx219 though:)
