Markoff··on Poland now 6th-largest EU economy, ahead of Switzerland and Belgium
> It stood out from the other Eastern European countries that I visited on that trip.

Just note for the other readers, don't call people in Poland, Czechia, Slovakia or Hungary Eastern Europeans unless you want to irritate them and look like pretentious tourist.

Markoff··on My server is a phone now
AFAIK this is rarity in smartphones and most are charged through battery, which is why those few which have it advertise their direct/bypass charging feature
Markoff··on Why Estonians invite strangers into their back gardens each summer
bringing something (like bottle of wine) while visiting someone is pretty normal everywhere around even when invited

now asking people you invited for money to cover your expenses, certainly is not normal in most of the world

apples and oranges, you are mixing up two completely different things

and these people are not really inviting friends or people they know to their place, they just run some small stand from their own home to make money, completely different ocassion/event than having a (birthday) party

Markoff··on Should you stop cracking your knuckles?
I've had serious issues with my wrist in June (after decades of sitting in front of computer for most of the worktime), it hurt when bent or when using it for almost any load.

I tried painkiller cream (don't think it helped), wrist brace (pretty much impossible to use mouse with it), wrist exercises (bending/stretching arm) didn't help.

I switched from traditional mouse (HP 255 dual wireless) to my wife's Logitech Lift Vertical (she didn't use and bought based on my recommendation anyway, so replaced with my HP) and the pain/issues were gone in ~2 weeks, not sure if it was thanks to the vertical mouse or if it would gone by itself, but just to be safe I keep using vertical mouse. Later I went to preventive check with my kid to their pediatrician, amusingly noticed he is using exactly same mouse.

Btw. how do you crack your wrist (you mean sudden movement to left/right/up/down)? I crack finger joints, but would never think of cracking the wrist.

If you need smartwatch to know where your children are at 10 PM you failed as parent, especially considering these watch are for young kids, not some teenagers with phones.
Markoff··on Why Estonians invite strangers into their back gardens each summer
TLDR you still want money from your visitors, no matter whether to cover expenses or make profit, that's not what we call hospitality back here in central Europe. Hospitality is when you don't expect anything in return for inviting someone somewhere, can't imagine inviting someone to my place and then charge them my expenses, that's very USan way of invitation...
Markoff··on Why Estonians invite strangers into their back gardens each summer
Or maybe let's just not pretend people are inviting strangers into their gardens because they wanna meet them as that clickbait title pretend and not just to earn money.

Hackers Stalked Me by Hijacking a Smartwatch for Kids = clickbait title, that never happened, hacker done it in cooperation with the smartwatch owner

Markoff··on Why Estonians invite strangers into their back gardens each summer
TLDR to earn (tax free?) money, it has nothing to do with hospitality
Markoff··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
200 SNATCHED phones a day is insane number, I seriously doubt in 10 times smaller European cities you will find 20 people per day with someone snatching their phone

Wouldn't disabling real time traffic data or using app not supporting real time traffic data solve this problem?
Markoff··on New Orleans will use AI to answer 911 calls instead of a human
If they think they will save money here on human dispatchers, they could not be more wrong, this will be sued into oblivion after first few deaths caused by AI incompetence to deal with non-standard situations. And I am afraid the worst part is the people who greenflagged this, will walk free.

In case of major event they could just use prerecorded message at the beginning of the call to give people some simple advices for those who can call later, that's what we did in insurance claims department when the line was overloaded. By my experience sometmes dealing with pretty non-standard stuff + now experiences dealing with AI daily for work, this will 100% go wrong despite whatever their press release says about 100% success rate in 3 months (does anyone believe 100% rate?).

Markoff··on On non-rooted Android 17, ADB uninstall of system apps fails
Why would you uninstall them over disabling them? They make good point uninstalling is pointless, disabling achieves same purpose and it is safer. You can't use that system space anyway.

if you don't want some system app running just "uninstall" (disable) it with Shizuku + Canta on any non-rooted Android, my current phone is the first one in 15 years with Android which I didn't root since unlocking bootloader on XIaomi is pretty much impossible, but anyway I can achieve pretty much same results with Shizuku and additional apps like Canta, Hail, Shizuwall, etc.

Potential benefits:

as mentioned, Android 17 prohibits uninstalling system apps, but allows disabling disabling apps is usually safer, and they could be re-enabled from Settings in some cases many system apps run in the background after being uninstalled, but it's unknown whether they do when disabled. Neutral:

some apps might get re-enabled unless they're uninstalled (or the opposite). Potential harm:

that would make it more risky for those who prefer to uninstall instead to save storage most of the already listed apps are primarily tested for uninstalling rather than disabling disabling instead, decreases privacy by not hiding apps, keeping the device unique.

Markoff··on On non-rooted Android 17, ADB uninstall of system apps fails
just use Shizuku + Canta to remove it
Markoff··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
you can have Android without google play services and AI and it will be still less painful experience than trying to use Linux phone as your daily driver

Markoff··on Denmark: EVs Make Up 97% of New Private Car Sales in July
not viable solution for people in apartments, most of the cars in Prague sits on the street next to curb without any chargers nearby, I don't think there is any country which would have chargers for every car parked on street, it's always shared charger for MANY cars, which works when there are only very few EVs like right now, but once you reach certain point the only realistic solution are expensive fast chargers (which are inconvenient anyway, since it still takes much more time to refill energy for same range as ICE in same amount of time)
Markoff··on People are mysteriously disappearing off WhatsApp
This exactly happened to me as well in beginning of July when I dared to contact my airbnb host from different country directly from web.whatsapp on computer just after adding their contact.. Immediately saw Restricted messages, but once they answered we chatted normally and everything worked fine.

Next morning I wake up with Whatsapp account blocked (one day before flight, very convenient timing...), so immediately raised appeal, luckily account access recovered after 5-6 hours, but it made me think I should not have all my eggs in one basket (WA is only messenger I use with everyone) and since then I have also Telegram installed as backup just in case (I required IM you can use on computer from browser without installing anything, so quite limited options and telegram works exactly same as Whatsapp).

that's what I get for relying on Google, apparently also Audi and BMW sell diesel hybrids in Europe, other brands seem to be max 1 model of private cars

Markoff··on Hungary within millimetres of shutting down its NPP as region fights drought
Hungary has come “within millimetres” of having to shut down its nuclear power plant overnight, prime minister Péter Magyar said, as low water levels in the Danube continue to pose challenges for countries in south-eastern Europe.

“Around 1:30 a.m. we were a few millimetres away from completely shutting down the Paks Power Plant, but then the water level stopped falling and by morning it had risen 1.5 centimetres. The last turbine is currently operating safely,” Magyar said on social media.

The plant already operates at a reduced capacity of just over 10% after the Danube fell to a record low, making it impossible to cool it properly.

Energy minister István Kapitány said on Tuesday that a number of energy saving measures succeeded in lowering energy consumption to keep the grid secure.

A number of businesses have made significant adjustments to their normal ways of working to save energy consumption during the peak hours. For example, a grocery chain Lidl changed its baking shifts, and turned off its drink fridges – despite temperatures expected to get close to 40C. Electric car chargers in their parkings can only be used until 5pm, HVG reported.

Over in Romania, the government celebrated that a two-centimetre rise in water levels after yesterday’s spectacular controlled explosion, intended to divert the flow of the Danube to help cool its Cernavodă nuclear plant.

The plant manager told local media that it should help keep the plant running during the next few days, but more interventions are planned today, with plans to sink old barges to further divert the flow of water.

pretty much no brands with any relevant sales in Europe besides Mercedes and Mazda produce diesel hybrids
Markoff··on Denmark: EVs Make Up 97% of New Private Car Sales in July
1. they are building their service network, they are taking over EU factories so they can produce cars here, it is not really anything new, it is Japan/Korea story all over, just instead of ICE it is PHEV/BEV

2. that's why you choose decades old company like BYD, Cherry (Omoda, Jaecoo) or Geely (with their sub-brands Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Volvo), I would refrain from companies like Xpeng or Nio which doesn't have strong company behind them, actually I would not be so sure either that Tesla car brand will still exist in 10 years (at least outside US)

I sure have bigger trust in future of big Chinese companies than those EU companies like VW with very uncertain future, they survived Japanese/Korean ICE invasion with big losses (my mother has Toyota, my father has like 3rd or 4th Japanese car, I think in last 30 years he had only one European brand car, because EU brands just can't compete), I am not so sure these legacy EU brands will all survive Chinese PHEV/BEV invasion, if they will survive they will be most likely acquired by Chinese like Volvo anyway.

roughly 47% Danish population lives in multi-dwelling apartment blocks (53% in house properties)

in Norway its roughly 25% (apartments) vs 75% (houses)

Markoff··on Denmark: EVs Make Up 97% of New Private Car Sales in July
some sure would, but do you seriously think 97% of private buyers would rather pay 30000 EUR extra (or double the retail price) for those few BEV advantages? I really doubt that, these sales are all just tax policy and nothing to do with BEV benefits

zero ICE advantages?

1. lower price (if gov doesn't destroy market with taxes/benefits)

2. much bigger range

3. you can refill the tank in few minutes without any planning pretty much anywhere

4. you are saving the roads since ICE is usually much lighter than comparable BEV, cars should pay road tax based on their weight as main factor

5. cheaper per km expenses (vs fast chargers, half of the DK population lives in apartments)

OTOH BEV advantages:

1. better acceleration

2. quieter

3. simpler engine, so in theory less maintenance and higher longetivity

btw. you don't smell stink of your fumes, so your EV doesn't really solve this problem

I really doubt (most) people care about acceleration/noise and maintenance that much they would be willing to pay double price of the ICE and get those disadvantages

Don't get me wrong, I am fan of EVs, but under normal market conditions. Bring me Chinese EVs for Chinese price and if EV will be actually cheaper than some European ICE, then people can accept those EV disadvantages, but at current prices which are already not real thanks to gov it just doesn't make sense for someone not living in their own house with PV.

Markoff··on Denmark: EVs Make Up 97% of New Private Car Sales in July
it is hidden behind paywall, here no paywall and in English

https://www.electrive.com/2026/08/04/denmark-evs-account-for...

also it should be noted that Denmark has extremely high car registration taxes, so for instance 40K EUR worth ICE car cost after registration 73.5K EUR, while 40K EUR BEV cost after registration 40K EUR, that's really tough choice to make - either you pay 73K EUR for ICE or 40K EUR for BEV, both with same price tag in dealership + BEV has other benefits like cheaper parking etc.

if gov were to remove these artificial (B)EV tax benefits then we would really see what would people choose, but gov is completely influecing the market, so people just do what is currently beneficial for their wallet, it is for sure not due to EV being good, do you think people would buy EVs if tax rates were reversed and ICE would cost 40K EUR and BEV would cost 73K EUR?
