Markoff··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
if they would gang up on me I'd stand no chance and it wouldn't be fair, then I can't play at all (what would be the point playing against them if I'd be dead after just few rounds, I don't mind losing in the end, but dont like being dead after short time and just them playing long without me) and as I said they are already winning sometimes (like 1/4th games maybe), just not that often (in my other favorite games like sega all star racing and blur we are already pretty even with older kid), everyone should play for themselves
Markoff··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Honestly I am not even interested in PS4 and especially PS5 exploits, the only reason I have PS3 is to play split screen games with kids or kids alone, the push to online play killed consoles for me, PS3 was the peak of split screen gaming, PS4 and PS5 have significantly less split screen games than PS3 and let's not forget you can play PS1 and PS2 split screen games on PS3, so I guess for someone not playing split screen games these jailbreaks are relevant, but for me they killed their newer consoles with abandoninh split screen games. I bought our previous PS3 Slim for 40EUR including shipping, after one year it died most likely because of RSX (random artifacts, no overheating), now bought PS3 Super Slim for 50EUR, will see how long will last that, but anyway if it would be 40-50EUR per year of offline split screen gaming I am fine with that, using HEN.

and since someone asked me here recently what we play, here copypasta:

What we/they play:

my favorite game (but they are sick of it, not appreciating it, most of the time I win) is Worms 2 Armageddon (part of Worms Revolution collection)

Blur - racing with fun for me and son

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing or Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - all of us including dauther

Little Big Planet - co-op platformer, all of us liked it until it got really difficult

NHL Legacy edition - all of us ocassionally

MotorStorm - Pacific Rift - racing, seems only son, but I can bear it for while

Children like (but without me):

Minecraft - PlayStation 3 Edition - they play it offline like all games we have, I guess it is co-op

Rayman Legends - co-op platformer

The Simpsons Game - co-op platformer, but needs to think, can get stuck in places

and since we watch together MotoGP and F1 they recently started to play F1 2013 - Complete Edition, but seems too difficult, for racing the best fun is first Sonic all star racing or Blur

on PS2:

LEGO Batman - co-op platformer, but requires lot of thinking

Shrek 2 - same as above

we liked from PS1:

Crash team racing, but now it is replaced with sonic with better graphics on PS3

Circuit Breakers (USA) - racing, all of us

FoxKids.com - Micro Maniacs Racing - racing, but with running characters

Tom and Jerry in House Trap - they like

Markoff··on The new Firefox design is here
Redesign for the sake of the redesign, I am using Vivaldi on desktop as daily driver, tried updating Firefox, after update received some gayish pink browser, which I resolved by installing Dark theme for firefox (I don't want dark pages), not really optimal since I would prefer the current tab highlighted in white, the density can be resolved by using Compact setting, but still dunno:

1. how to have rectangular tabs instead of pills - solved with gemini by creating css with content:

/* Square Firefox tabs */ .tabbrowser-tab, .tab-background { border-radius: 0 !important; } .tabbrowser-tab[selected="true"], .tab-background[selected="true"] { border-radius: 0 !important; }

2. how to have tabs touching the top of the window so I can easily switch between them by having cursor on top of the screen since there is gap between top of the window border and tab border - tried removing gap with script, but seems the best working solution is moving window up off the screen a bit to achieve desired result

3. how to hide close tab button and close it with double click

4. and I need to install gesture control, can't imagine anymore using desktop browser without mouse gestures (left to go back, down to close the window) - Gesturefy seems OK, though it doesn't work in settings and firefox pages like extensions etc.

Markoff··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
you can just use Reader view/mode, most of the browsers have it nowadays (though still not excuse for using bad font, though I find it OK on this particular website)
Markoff··on I switched to Brave
it makes no sense to switch from Vivaldi to Brave lacking any customization, with Vivaldi you can customize it as much you want, if you don't want, nobody forces you to, with Brave you don't have such option

I am still on Vivaldi and instead of switching from Vivaldi to Firefox I gave a try to uBlock Origin Lite and seems to work fine, the UI is much worse than uBO (I am especially missing easy switch to turn it off completely instead of disabling extension in browser settings), but can live with it, as much as I dislike Firefox (using it on mobile though) it's the only alternative I would move to from Vivaldi on desktop

so 3 chinese app stores vs APKMirror, APKPure and Aptoide, I think I'd trust more APKM over the rest, personally I update only from Github/Fdroid and APKPure/Aptoide I have disabled

China doesn't run on cards or cash - it runs on app-based payments. WeChat Pay and Alipay rule, and while you could use both as a tourist before, WeChat is launching a new dedicated payment app for tourists. It's called TenPayGo and you can pay with it wherever WeChat Pay is accepted.

You download it, set it up with your email address, and you can choose to use Apple Pay, another payment wallet ("nearly 60" international ones are supported), or your card directly through it. Then, every time you make a purchase in China with the app, you are charged by your mobile wallet or your card.

The app can also be used to identify landmarks or objects by taking a photo of them, and it can translate menus for you too. It will soon support tickets for public transport in Shenzhen, as well as easy tax refunds (again, Shenzhen first).

just so you know you could replace Obtainium and F-Droid with APKUpdater which covers both sources and even more, I am using it alongside Aurora

https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater

Markoff··on F-Droid 2.0
You can use APKUpdater instead, it supports APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, APKPure, GitLab and GitHub, I tried Obtainium and it was PITA to set up, I am much happier with APKUpdater for apps not covered by Aurora Store

https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater

Markoff··on F-Droid 2.0
I remember Obtainium being PITA to set up, is there any benefit in ObtainX over APKUpdater from rumboalla? Seems to have way more sources.

https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater

Markoff··on F-Droid 2.0
Why limit yourself only to F-Droid when in APK Updater you can have APKMirror, Aptoide, F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, APKPure, GitLab and GitHub?

https://github.com/rumboalla/apkupdater

I don't really need app to discover other apps, I need app to install/update the apps I already know.

Markoff··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
anyway I don't get what has official name since 60s to do with how people commonly called it up until recently, at least in 90s it was frequently called positive discrimination, heck I even remember when black people could be called black and not african american

judging by the response I assume "positive discrimination" ain't mainstream anymore in the US

Markoff··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
she started at earlier age, parents at that age can easily brainwash a kid, the kid will "enjoy" whatever they will tell him to enjoy, now after years of abuse, sorry, I mean training, she doesn't even most likely know there is any alternative to life like this

I can assure you Chinese parents can very easily force 6yo to do anything 2 hours a day (she spends most likely more hours a day than they claim), what is she gonna do, what's her other alternative at this age?

Markoff··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
before opening - I hope she is not Asian

of course she is Asian, poor kid, Asian parents do this to their kids, so they excel in one field/discipline after hundreds of hours training and lost childhood, it's completely meaningless victory for her future life, but at least parent's ego was stroked and they have now bragging rights, sad...

for anyone who thinks about calling me a racist - lived in China for years, my wife is Chinese and I have mixed kids, so I am bit familiar with Chinese/East Asian parenting (and trying to stop ideas like these ocassionally)

Markoff··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
I remember when it was called publically "positive discrimination", but I guess it's not part of the newspeak, because everyone can see it's actually a discrimination even if you slap there "positive" to make it look better.

I would assume most of the countries nowadays do this at least if you apply in home country, it can be different in embassy abroad, I remember taking photos of my year old kid born abroad, good luck with that in embassy (the trick is taking photo from above while kid is looking up laying on some white sheet).

Markoff··on Jehovah's Witnesses allow blood-derived products but keep ban on whole-blood
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have partly eased their longstanding prohibition on the medical use of donated blood, allowing members to receive products derived from blood but maintaining a ban on transfusions of whole blood.

The policy, announced Friday, is the second revision this year in what has long been one of the most controversial and distinctive teachings of the religious organization.

The new policy says that individuals can receive products derived from blood donated by other people. It says they can receive medical treatments that involve the use of the four main components of whole blood: plasma, platelets and red and white blood cells.

“Each Christian must make his own personal decision about the use of these four primary components in all medical and surgical care,” said Geoffrey W. Jackson, a member of the Governing Body of the organization, based in New York State.

The new announcement also allows members to decide as a matter of individual conscience whether to donate blood to be used for blood products for the medical treatment of others.

But the organization continues to oppose members receiving transfusions of whole blood or donating blood for that purpose.

In March, the Governing Body also announced a revised policy, authorizing members to have their blood stored for their own future medical treatment, but not for others’.

Critics have faulted the organization for prohibiting the use of a proven treatment that can be lifesaving in replenishing blood lost in surgeries, accidents or violence. Critics, including former church members, say that the teaching has led to deaths that could have been prevented.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ longtime opposition to blood transfusions derives from their interpretation of Bible passages requiring believers to “abstain” from blood. While Jewish and other Christian religious traditions have interpreted this as a dietary law, Jehovah’s Witnesses have extended that prohibition to transfusions.

Blood components are often used for specific treatments.

Plasma, the liquid component of blood, is often used for those suffering from trauma or certain diseases, according to the American Red Cross. Red cells can be used to treat conditions such as anemia and white cells to treat certain infections. Platelets are used in some cancer and other treatments.

Members shouldn’t make the decision on using blood products lightly, Paul Gillies, international spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witnesses, said in an interview.

“What we’re saying is you have to pray about it, you have to study it, you have to see what the Bible has to say about it, because blood in the Bible represents life,” Gillies said. Members need to consider all these factors before reaching “a decision that you feel happy about with your God.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses, who emerged in 19th century America, share many Christian beliefs with other churches but diverge on key theological issues, such as the nature of Jesus and biblical prophecy. They are almost alone in their beliefs about blood transfusions. Jehovah’s Witnesses reported a U.S. membership of 1.3 million in 2025, with a worldwide membership of 9.2 million in more than 200 countries and territories.

Markoff··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
No need to be drama queen. I am also 40+, had for sure 10-20 cigarettes in my teenage years to try it and on social ocassions with friends, never saw the appeal, found the taste disgusting (and remember being dizzy) and don't remember my 1st cigarette at all. For the record I dislike as well taste of beer or coffee, got used to wine, which I drink only when visiting father or him visiting me, so totally like twice a year (though it's then multiday affair). It's same with alcohol addiction, drank fairly enough during teenage years, then pretty much stopped completely during 20s (only rarely with colleagues), then around 30 while in China was drinking daily for lunch and dinner 40+ % spirit (baijiu) for months with colleagues, then completely stopped overnight after finding better (but less laid-back) job.

Now recreational marijuana (ideally through bong) is way way more appealing than dumb tobacco cigarettes which do nothing, had it during my teenage years and also during my 20s on different ocassions with colleagues/friends (one of them used it during cancer treatment) and I can see myself having some even now in 40s if I could buy it legally.

Markoff··on Chinese paint cuts wall temperature by 25 degrees Celsius in summer test: report
"According to an R&D director from the Suzhou-based venture, on a clear 30-degree (86 Fahrenheit) day, a treated tank’s surface temperature can drop by roughly 25 degrees"

All I see in their claim is ambient temperature 30C, while surface heated in sun easily to 55C (or even more) with this paint claiming 97% reflectance to keep it at ambient temperature or slightly above.

Obviously the paint can't make surface cooler than ambient.
