An EverDrive 64 sells for $100-200 and is often marked up to $300+ territory. The idea of a $10 EverDrive is really exciting.

Surely we could do better by hosting something in orbit. I found an interesting case: the USS (Unix-Space-Server) Langley, launched in 2015: https://spaceflight101.com/spacecraft/uss-langley/

MarioMan··on Cool desktops don’t change
>There are many things my 2010 era Core2Duo running Ubuntu 10.04 can do that my fancy new Ryzen desktop with Debian 11 can't and won't ever be able to do. Things I cannot give up because they're too important for my daily life.

This has me curious: What sorts of tasks are you doing that only work on a machine like this? I love finding new things to do with old hardware, so I'm interested in your insights.

MarioMan··on We got Linux on the iPhone, iPad and other idevices
> Would it be possible to remove the battery and run them entirely on AC power?

Unfortunately, it seems this is not possible. https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/316746/Will+this+phone+t...

MarioMan··on We got Linux on the iPhone, iPad and other idevices
Plenty of end of life uses work just fine living off of a charger. For instance, setting up an old iPad or iPhone as a home hub (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207057) requires the device stay plugged in already. I can imagine plenty of cases where an old phone could be a suitable substitute or even an upgrade over a Raspberry Pi (Pi-hole, Home Assistant, Spotify hookup for an old home stereo, etc.).

If the battery is absolutely crucial for your use case, quality replacements can still be had. The iPhone 5 battery, for instance, can be replaced for $30, with all needed tools included: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Battery/IF118-0...

Anything that keeps perfectly usable devices like these out of landfills is a win in my book.

MarioMan··on Apple Unveils M2
Now that we have validation that Apple is sticking with a numeric naming convention, I wonder how they will handle the upcoming naming clash with the M7 through M12 motion coprocessors used in the A-series chips.
MarioMan··on FTC fines Twitter $150M for using 2FA phone numbers for ad targeting
Although it is primarily designed and labeled as an export mechanism, I can verify that it does work as a backup mechanism. I regularly use it to sync up new 2FA accounts to a backup phone. Simply choose to keep the accounts after exporting.
MarioMan··on Pikascript: An ultra-lightweight Python engine that can run in 4Kb of RAM
Among other things, hard drive labeled capacities are noteworthy for using the decimal definitions.
MarioMan··on Connecting a gaming PC to Apple Studio Display
While often related, refresh rate is not inherently tied to blurriness. High resolutions improve sharpness while ULMB, Lightboost, or even using a CRT can reduce ghosting to improve motion clarity. High refresh rates primarily help with perceived smoothness and latency.
MarioMan··on Emulator of Original Dell Charger Using ATTINY85
The Digispark[1] and its clones use the ATTINY85 and offer flashing over USB via the Micronucleus bootloader[2] using V-USB[3]. It comes at the cost of a significant chunk of flash storage, but the convenience is excellent. Plus, V-USB support means you can emulate all sorts of USB devices. I've used it to build a DIY NES controller adapter, but it's commonly used as a cheap Rubber Ducky[4]. For projects where USB interfacing makes sense, it can be a good fit.

I use a <picture> element with multiple versions as a <source>. This allows the browser to choose which size and format is best automatically. Many site generators will set these up automatically, with the right plugin. See: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/pi...

MarioMan··on Lawsuit filed alleging Google is paying Apple to stay out of the search business
Also worth looking at is the DOJ antitrust complaint filed against Google in 2020: https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/7273457/10-20-20-US-v...

It makes a similar set of complaints for the same practices and, in my opinion, is very well-written.

MarioMan··on Vscode.dev
It’s not an especially fair case, but I was surprised at how poorly VSCode ran on a Raspberry Pi 3 when I tried it awhile back. Running it with a remote connection to a beefier machine would make for an amazing thin client.
MarioMan··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
It could get tedious depending on how many sites you want to block, but you can add "-site:google.com" to exclude google.com, for instance.
MarioMan··on Why is it so hard to be rational?
Sometimes I go into deep-dives to try to find some truth to a contentious issue. I think it’s important not to take the easy path; certainly not if you want a well-learned opinion. Any sense of superiority this gives me is dashed when I realize:

1) It’s not reasonable to expect someone to dig so deeply, and there isn’t enough time to do it for every issue.

2) Someone, somewhere, has done an even deeper dive into the same issue. From their perspective, I’m the one that hasn’t done my research. When it’s “enough” is a fuzzy line.

MarioMan··on Nintendo DS-TV-Out Restoration Project
It’s an old article, but it’s laid out nicely here: https://www.macworld.com/article/1152935/jailbreak_exemption...

Essentially, bypassing DRM is a violation of the DCMA unless it has received an exemption from the government. Exemptions must be reevaluated every three years else they expire.

MarioMan··on SolarWinds hackers were able to access Microsoft source code
But they do a great deal of backporting anyway. Enterprise and Education users can run a slow path that gets bug fixes and security updates only, for feature updates as far as 30 months back. This is not offered for any other editions of Windows, meaning feature updates are forced on them earlier than they need to be.

MarioMan··on The Ampere Altra Review: 2x 80 Cores Arm Server Performance Monster
Modern CPUs like these are shared memory multiprocessors. Programs on these CPUs are often designed to run on multiple cores at the same time to improve performance, necessitating communication between cores, to coordinate and share work between each other. Since each core typically has a private cache, most communication in a system like this will typically involve cache coherence protocols to ensure cores have a consistent view of memory contents. Adding more cores increases the overall complexity of the system. The latency of these protocols grows with more cores as interconnections become more "distant", across processor interconnects. Minimizing latency and effectively scaling to more cores is a difficult problem to solve while staying within silicon and thermal budgets.
MarioMan··on Apple blocks game streaming services unless individual games are approved
The difference is that a movie streaming app streams fixed content while game streaming essentially streams arbitrary apps, albeit limited to gaming in this situation. From Apple's perspective, this sort of precedent could lead to entire app ecosystems bypassing the app store via streaming. It would be a workaround to Apple's refusal to allow third party stores on iOS. The same risk doesn't apply to more constrained and static content like video, books, and music.

I feel its important to mention that the issue is not quite as clear cut as this, since we have interactive Netflix movies and an ecosystem of web-based apps via Safari, but this seems to be Apple's rationale.

MarioMan··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
Are they accomplishing anything that couldn't and isn't already done well be an NVMe M.2 connector? All that comes to my mind is a miniscule space savings.

If it helps, all of them are "by Instagram" or in some way complementary to Instagram. None of the top results are impersonating Instagram.
