MarcellusDrum··on Twitter Blue for $8/Month
The function of the previous blue check mark is still going to be available for free, as a label under the name (similar to what government affiliated personnel currently have). So there is nothing to lose if you don't want to subscribe to Twitter Blue. You will still be verified.
MarcellusDrum··on Ask HN: How would you design an alternative Twitter
How would you handle replies and nested replies using RSS? I believe that is a major appeal of Twitter.
MarcellusDrum··on Kathleen Booth, the inventor of assembly language, has died
Honestly at this point, it should, as it is widely used. Maybe a page where be can see all the mentions so he can check them if he has time, not something disruptive like an email notification for every mention obviously.
MarcellusDrum··on DuckDuckGo for Mac beta now open to the public
He "clarified" by twisting and lying about the situation. Simply said - down-ranking is censorship, whether you agree with it or not. Pushing a result to page 3 or 4 in a search engine means that 99.99% of people won't see it, effectively hiding (ie. censoring) it from public view.
MarcellusDrum··on Show HN: Minimal, no-JS web forum software
Optionally. The site works just fine with JS disabled.
MarcellusDrum··on Hacker News is a masterpiece
Other than someone buying it for the prestige, I doubt that HN is worth much in itself. Other than email addresses, there is no data of value to mine that I can think of.

The only way to make money without digging the site's grave is to give a boost to posts advertising something. It has to be done infrequently and in a very subtle way so the users don't notice, and they will have a hard time finding advertisers without people finding out that they do it.

So yeah, I don't think its really worth it.

MarcellusDrum··on Hacker News Official API
I'd say it depends on how straightforward the new API will be. The app I use (Materialistic) is both free and ads-free. So I don't expect the developer to drop everything they are doing to update it if will require a lot of work. So 6 months minimum if everything is well documented, a year if it will be a hassle.
MarcellusDrum··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
I currently do. It's not perfect, but honestly, I don't understand the hate.
MarcellusDrum··on CEO's LinkedIn crying selfie about layoffs met with backlash
There is. If an e-commerce provider got publicity for a data leak revealing unencrypted credit card number, unhashed passwords, and email addresses, it is definitely bad publicity, because its a negative story about a core feature of the company.

So seeing how the CEO of a marketing company is so out of touch with reality, and created a PR disaster for his company, it is in no way good publicity.

MarcellusDrum··on Facebook gives data to Nebraska police prosecuting teenager for abortion
And what makes the opposite opinion relevant? Until it can be scientifically proven when and what makes a human being, all opinions on the matter are, well, subjective opinions.

What makes 24 weeks the magic number for abortions? What's the difference between 24 and 25 weeks, in terms of fetus development? Why draw the line there, and not at 24.5 weeks? Or 23 weeks?

The relevant and superior opinion you're holding is just an arbitrary number.

MarcellusDrum··on Facebook gives data to Nebraska police prosecuting teenager for abortion
Doesn't make it right in the opinion of a lot of people though.
MarcellusDrum··on Portugal ‘fooled’ ex-dictator to believe he still led from his sickbed
If he was that clueless, why lie to him? He clearly lost support and power by then, so why bother? Genuinely asking.
MarcellusDrum··on Old jokes
It's a good joke, but the delivery isn't very good. Seeing "electrocution" and "conductor" in the same sentence immediately made me get the joke, so I skipped to the end, and I was correct.

Maybe they should have given him a name and used that instead of "conductor", and only refer to him as a conductor 3-4 times throughout the story.

MarcellusDrum··on The Harry Potter fallacy
How do you prove both of these claims wrong, using calculus?
MarcellusDrum··on Meta Reports Second Quarter 2022 Results
Do you think we have already seen peak Facebook? Obviously we can't judge from one bad(?) quarter, but from Meta's desperate attempts to copy Tiktok, I think its a slow decline from here.
MarcellusDrum··on DVD Netflix 404
What's your IP's country?
MarcellusDrum··on Developing Godot Projects with Neovim
It's a cliché at this point, but 4.0 (or more realistically, 4.1/4.2) would be the milestone that would result in professional adoption of Godot. 3D is still at indie-level now, and requires a lot of workarounds and hacks for some advanced stuff.
MarcellusDrum··on Controversy continues over whether hot water freezes faster than cold
Actually, it is mentioned in the article:

> Water is a strange substance, less dense when solid than liquid, and with solid and liquid phases that can coexist at the same temperature.

MarcellusDrum··on Russia Defaults on Foreign Debt for First Time Since 1918
> Where does China and india sell its stuff to?

True, but this works in reverse as well. Where does the US/Europe get their stuff from?

Obviously western society won't collapse due to the lack of Chinese merchandise, but it will have a huge effect.

MarcellusDrum··on Russia Defaults on Foreign Debt for First Time Since 1918
It's not like the US/EU can just sanction China and India on top of the Russian and Iranian sanctions. All that would do is make those countries more economically connected than ever before, and creating an alternative for smaller sanctioned countries like Syria and Venezuela, making all sanctions useless.
MarcellusDrum··on Relearning to Learn
While this may work for some things, I find that this strategy doesn't work for my particular interests. I've been trying to get into game development and character modeling in Blender for a while now. 20 minutes a day isn't even enough to warm up and remember where you left off. And at the same time, I can't justify giving this hobby a couple of hours a day to give it a real shot.
MarcellusDrum··on Ask HN: CS grad who barely knows any CS
https://teachyourselfcs.com is an amazing resource, might be worth checking out.
MarcellusDrum··on DuckDuckGo faces controversy over tracking agreement with Microsoft
They deliberately lower the ranking of Russian news sites.[0]

MarcellusDrum··on Show HN: A Reddit style site to discuss podcast episodes
Popular podcasts have their own subreddits that discuss each episode. Having a separate app/platform for this is going to be hard to sell.
MarcellusDrum··on Gimp 3 Beta Released
Since countries other than US/some European countries existed. Godot developers get paid in the $30-40k range. I live in Lebanon, and it is normal for talented senior developers to be paid $15-25k a year.
MarcellusDrum··on Gimp 3 Beta Released
Which is their own fault. They have more than a million dollars in bitcoin donations that haven't been touched in years (Its around 620k now since bitcoin is crashing). That could have easily funded 3 full-time developers for a decade to come.
MarcellusDrum··on What Is the Fediverse?
> If you remove the communication links between those nice round planets shown in the animation, they become drab and dreary, and not worth having at all, and you're back to twitter.

True, if you are the toxic community that was cut out. You know who still thinks the Mastodon is worth having? Mastodon.social users, who were able to protect themselves from unfriendly/unwelcome users, and didn't have to go back to Twitter.

Also, you gave an extreme example, of a left-leaning and right-leaning instances not agreeing with each other. But I see no reason why an instance mainly populated with geeks and an instance mainly populated with gamers/musicians/sport fans can't peacefully federate.

MarcellusDrum··on Edward Snowden revealed as key participant in mysterious ceremony creating zcash
Umm, he did address this on his Twitter.

> I'm not suspended from the ceiling above a barrel of acid by a rope that burns a little faster every time I tweet, you concern-trolling ghouls. I've just lost any confidence I had that sharing my thinking on this particular topic continues to be useful, because I called it wrong.

He admitted that he was wrong, and did the responsible thing which is not speculating anymore about things he does not understand.

MarcellusDrum··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
Not an expert on this, but maybe this is because you have been hosting your server for 20 years? Maybe newer servers have a higher threshold to cross? Seems a logical hypothesis to me, which would mean you're both right.
MarcellusDrum··on Ask HN: If you had 24 hours in the year 2050, what questions would you ask?
> 1 is kind of useless.

I'm talking about them personally not enlisting in the army and fighting in those wars.
