MarcellusDrum··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
You're saying that building their own website using AI is equivalent to sending spam emails?
MarcellusDrum··on WhatsApp Business Paid Support Is a Scam
We use it for sales. People in our country use Whatsapp. We don't have another choice.
MarcellusDrum··on I bought a monitor extender. No Linux support. I made a driver out of pure rage
A couple of days ago, I bought a "Powerology Dual Screen Portable Monitor". The seller's description said it supported Linux, so I didn't look more into it. Turns out, they are using a proprietary protocol, with no Linux support (they say so on their official website).

While it is one of the cheapest of its kind, to me, that was a lot of money. Out of pure rage, I (with the help of Claude), spent 8 hours making a driver for it, and it works. Here is the Github Repo (MIT Licensed). Learned a lot about how displays work in the process, and how to reverse engineer it.

The funny part? One monitor failed after a few hours (vertical green line), and I was able to return it, and got a one with proper DisplayLink support, so I don't need the driver anymore.

Well, hopefully someone can find use of it.

Ohh, and the old dock is sluggish (even on windows). So unless its the only one you can afford, I don't recommend it.

MarcellusDrum··on Are AI labs pelicanmaxxing?
The article clearly shows that this benchmark is not tainted.
MarcellusDrum··on When AI Costs More Than the Engineer
Are you really saying that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of "Meta", can't make a massive miscalculation?
MarcellusDrum··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
> I feel cheated and deceived

Why? Not trying to argue against AI labeling, but if you are enjoying the music, why does it matter?

MarcellusDrum··on Claude Opus 4.6
Thanks for trying! Good to know.
MarcellusDrum··on Show HN: I spent 3 years reverse-engineering a 40 yo stock market sim from 1986
I read this in it's entirety. Not skimmed through it, but read every single word (took about 30 minutes)

You can imagine my disappointment when in the end, the code is still basically a mystery, and a wrapper around the core game was made.

Not because what you did is not hard or impressive, it's because, up until the line were you said you are going to use a wrapper, you made it seem like you're deciphering the code. That isn't really clickbait, because I had already clicked and spent 20 minutes reading. Being misled felt a bit bad, considering how beautifully the story is written.

Impressive work nonetheless.

Cortex. It's like their shared "brain". Starts with a C for extra points.
MarcellusDrum··on Claude Opus 4.6
So a good test would be replacing the spell names in the books with made-up spells. And if a "real" spell name was given, it also tests whether it "cheated".
MarcellusDrum··on Wayland is flawed at its core and the community needs to talk about it
This is my first time learning about this, so it's not like I hate Wayland and want confirmation on it. But the comments did not refute his main claims. It's a debate on whether the restrictions are a good trade off, but it seems to me that what he said is factual mostly.
MarcellusDrum··on My Reddit account was suspended for sharing a video of IDF losses
It is not subreddit moderation, my whole account was suspended. And it's not about that, it's about the fact that videos of IDF dying is banned, while Russians is not.

Discussion on media censorship.

MarcellusDrum··on Valve Software handbook for new employees [pdf] (2012)
Half-Life Alyx, Dota 2, Steam Deck, Index, Proton, CS:GO (released same year as this handbook), and not to mention still dominating with Steam despite the competiton spending hundreds of millions of dollars to not even make a dip in their marketshare.
MarcellusDrum··on Google Updates Its Vi vs. Emacs Easter Egg to Vim vs. Emacs
Previously, when you Googled Emacs, the webpage said "Did you mean vi", and vice versa. This seems to have recently been updated to vim instead of vi.
MarcellusDrum··on I Built My Own Audio Player
He said a few years back. I might have wrongly assumed 10 was his age back then.
MarcellusDrum··on I Built My Own Audio Player
I think its a demand issue, not a hardware/software one. Chinese manufactures are creating Mini IPhone 16 and Mini S24, devices that look good, can play music, have the functionalities of a smart phone, and sell for $50-$100.

Parents will probably buy similar devices to their children instead of an MP3 Player. You have an unconventional parenting style not to get your son a phone at 14. Don't get me wrong, I respect that, but there isn't a lot like you to warrant a demand beyond what's currently available.

MarcellusDrum··on How a $2k 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured
Is this the price in just components? I skimmed through the article and that wasn't clear. Because if it doesn't include labor costs, then its reasonable that the US phone sells for a lot more.

What's the alternative?
MarcellusDrum··on Can humans say the largest prime number before we find the next one?
I understand the nerdy need to automate this, but I feel like this defeats the purpose of the while experiment.
MarcellusDrum··on Meta outage
Maybe because of the sudden increase of traffic?
MarcellusDrum··on Meta outage
This is something I've thought about a while back. Like Facebook probably has a "maximum number of ads shown to users per post" value. So theoretically, they have a ceiling for how many ads can be bought in a specific time frame before having to increase the ceiling/find new users.

Do they share data about this?

MarcellusDrum··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
They are not free to fork Unreal as it is not open source, only code available.
MarcellusDrum··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
Lemmy is relatively thriving. I doubt this will be the "Great migration", but if Lemmy was able to hold enough users, the next time Reddit makes a big mistake, Lemmy will be a viable alternative by then.
MarcellusDrum··on Google no longer automatically indexes websites?
Well good luck showing people ads when people start using ChatGPT for all their internet searches.
MarcellusDrum··on Tell HN: YouTube download websites disappearing from Google search results
I'd use an engine that censors piracy sites over an engine that censors political views any day of the week.
MarcellusDrum··on Ask HN: Is Buying a Website for Its SEO Worth It?
Tried some free SEO audits, and they website is getting scores in the 80s. But what is really making me optimistic is me testing it for myself. Googling Laravel (in our language) for example, the website is the first result, above Laravel's official website and Wikipedia. And in the first page for "Godot", "How to learn programming", "Cloud Computing", "Vue JS", and more.

I will start my new business as a subdomain, leaving (and adding) to the existing articles.

International sanctions hurts innocent people. Who do you think is suffering more from the sanctions, Assad or the poor Syrians?

Well it is similar to how "Apple" is a trademark. They don't own the rights of the fruit, obviously, but you can't use the word "Apple" as an electronics (maybe even software) company.
MarcellusDrum··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
Because they only allow 50 searches per month in their free tier. You can check how the UI looks using the "Example search results" area in the home page.
MarcellusDrum··on We've filed a lawsuit against GitHub Copilot
I'm one of those who are against copyrights, but fully support this movement, for 2 reasons:

1) If Github Copilot is a free software liscensed under GPL, I'm all for it. Microsoft is using other's collective hard labour to benefit itself.

2) Its Microsoft. The king of dark patterns, monopolization, and the enemy of software freedom. They can't have their cake and eat it too.
