Mandatum··on Ask HN: Is Slack Down?
Whichever Salesforce employee has their bonus tied to this being declared an incident and not an outage; fuck you.

This has affected critical, operational processes which YOUR sales and marketing teams use in Case Studies[0][1][2] and documentation[3][4].

Mandatum··on Show HN: Simplex: Automate browser workflows using code and natural language
VC funding.
Mandatum··on Passkey technology is elegant, but it's most definitely not usable security
> But even with Apple, I can't sync stuff between my personal and work computer because they use different Apple IDs, even though the underlying true identity (me) is the same.

By design. This is what caused the ZenDesk, Atlassian, Disney and Sony hacks.

Mandatum··on Apple iPhone 16 Is Now Illegal in Indonesia, Ban Leaves Tourists in the Lurch
.. You should travel to Indonesia. Almost nobody has Apple products, the majority of people such as gig workers (GoJek) earn less than $10 per day. GoJek riders earn more than average, labour is incredibly cheap in Indonesia.

vivo and similar low-cost Android phones for the Indian market are popular.

Mandatum··on Ask HN: How to emulate a smartphone on a computer for banking apps?
Japan's quite unique in that regard.
Mandatum··on Show HN: Create diagrams of complex data flows in software systems

Mandatum··on Tell HN: Copilot For Business forcibly terminates Copilot Personal subscriptions
It's called domain claiming. Your org should have notified you, or asked that you migrated the email to your personal one.
Mandatum··on New BYD Hybrid Can Drive Non-Stop for More Than 2k Kilometers
You don’t think this wasn’t considered?

Did you take into consideration optimal load efficiencies? What about the total cost of ownership for the energy conversion from ICE?

In 2015, hybrids were already well optimised for the current technology limitations.

Mandatum··on Everyone has JavaScript, right?
Maybe the author can strategically synthesize something novel, and still relevant. This is like arguing about cloud and hosted infrastructure in 2006.
Mandatum··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
Wait until you learn that Vercel only supports blocking IP CIDR ranges on the Enterprise plan.
Mandatum··on Disillusioned with Deno
Having been forced to adopt Deno for new Slack integrations on their new integration platform, I ultimately ended up throwing it in the trash and migrating to the legacy Python SDK.

It has a mixed model open-"legacy" framework which at this point will be a death march.

It's fine, but I don't see it gaining critical mass.

Mandatum··on ZX – A tool for writing better scripts
A script, by its very nature, is synchronous. You run, you get a result. If you want a service, don't use a script.
Mandatum··on Ask HN: How to deal with constant interruptions at work (with ADHD)
You will only be effective in a high performant environment. The way you conduct yourself is considered toxic by most people.

I would press you to either make some consolations on your lack of response and ignoring of messages.

Unless you’re in HFT or an environment that is not dependent on relationships but systems, like government.

Mandatum··on Kind of annoyed at React
Hence, Redux.
Mandatum··on "Are you having fun, son?"
tl;dr: Author author reflects on past experiences and expresses a desire to prioritize and cultivate more moments of fun. Author encourages readers to embrace and seek out opportunities for fun in order to maintain a fulfilling and balanced life.

My gripe: Author ignores responsibilities of being an adult. Author is 25 and ignores their privilege.

Try having kids, or a mortgage, or struggling to maintain friendships, or dealing with your a loved one's ailments. Life is hard, sometimes you can't make time.

Mandatum··on Platformer announces it's leaving Substack
https://mastodon.social/@caseynewton/111689353496969498

tldr: They're trying to pressure SubStack into changing their tune on content moderation, and are meeting them today. Suspect this is just a play to push leadership via PR.

Mandatum··on Fast self-hostable open-source workflow engine
I suggest you work with a copywriter and come up with a better way of presenting windmill.dev. How you're presenting it makes sense to you, because you built it. You know what you mean when you say words like "boilerplate" and "business logic". That has a specific meaning in your head. But it's different for every person in the software industry. To a customer, it's confusing.

For investors:

> We are a developer platform for enterprise, offering a performance-focused solution for building internal software using code. Our open-source platform allows businesses to focus on their unique business logic while we handle the boilerplate tasks, resulting in high-velocity development and the ability to scale at enterprise levels.

For devs:

> We are a developer platform for enterprise, providing a system for running code written in Python, Typescript, Go, Bash, and query languages at scale. Our platform focuses on performance and offers extensive capabilities to build internal software, including APIs, workflows, background jobs, and UIs. With a fully open-source and flexible architecture, developers can concentrate on their business logic while leveraging our robust ecosystem for efficient development and hosting options.

Generic:

> Windmill is a developer platform designed for enterprises to build internal software efficiently. It combines the speed of low-code solutions with the flexibility of coding, allowing developers to focus on unique business logic rather than boilerplate tasks like permissioning, queuing, and front-end development. Our platform is fully open-source, offering high performance and hosting versatility.

> Our active community of developer users provides constant feedback, driving our platform's growth. By emphasizing commonly used languages such as Python, TypeScript, Go, and Bash, Windmill serves as a generalist tool without compromising quality, enabling complex functionalities within a production-ready, enterprise-scale environment.

Mandatum··on Tutanota is now Tuta
https://www.reddit.com/r/tutanota/comments/k3sfs5/comment/ge...

With no guarantee of compliance, nor guarantee of a backdoor not being added to this service - it’s hard to put Tuta ahead of any other supposed privacy-first provider. They didn’t pull a TPB and tell the court to get fucked, and exit the country. So it’s hard to assume they’ll ever not comply with a backdoor order.

So instead I’ll opt for the one least likely to go under, with the most features. And it’s not Tuta.

Mandatum··on Being sold through the CeraVe Amazon store doesn't mean it's genuine
It’s simply. Use a dedicated Amazon account for shopping. Use a credit card when you shop. If Amazon ever denies your claim, chargeback and create a new account.

Amazon will end up on the hook.

Don’t try and fight the system, use it.

Mandatum··on Tesla strike widens as Swedish union expands blockade

Mandatum··on Bitwarden adds support for passkeys
You can still have a password, but think of it as a backup. Or you rely solely on the lost password process to reaccess your account.
Mandatum··on Internal slides on the work of the Google "Ads Quality" team
Wow. The default search function is about to get royally fucked by the EU because of that last slide.

If only Google had set file retention for slides to 24 hours like they do chat.

Mandatum··on 12ft.io has been banned by Vercel
Sure, but 12ft has been around for years. They’ve likely spent hundreds of hours answering copyright and legal questions and inquiries.
Mandatum··on 12ft.io has been banned by Vercel
I wonder if this is the first time the author has heard from Vercel.

I suspect Vercel never wanted to host this persons content given the amount of legal requests they likely had to deal with.

It probably would have been better business from Vercel to reach out and say, “Hey, it costs us too much money in legal fees dealing with your content. We’re not Amazon. Can you move somewhere else?”

Asking the question and not waiting until it’s too late to deal with it would have been the way to go.

Vercel has known about this site for a long time. Seems a weird way to deal with it, and tells me that their CS team don’t do much proactive support.

Mandatum··on Show HN: YCombinato – A domain-hacked "Hacker News" client
No issues. I suspect your browser is reporting enough “not a phishing” reports from users to remove the auto block.
Mandatum··on 12ft.io has been banned by Vercel
Sounds like it’s resolved. Author just got angry after getting back from holiday, and seeing their access to every site they own is cut. Which is reasonable given it seems Vercel doesn’t have site level granularity of restricting access.

Which is worrisome.

What other level of granularity are they missing? Do I need to worry about security and access controls?

Mandatum··on Ask HN: Recommendations for Visiting the Japanese Countryside
I’d only stop in Tokyo for the day, and continue up the country to Hakodate. The weather will change, there’s near no tourists and you’ll see a mountainous part of Japan that’s completely different to where else you’ve been.

Then on the last day that you fly out, go back in early - hit up whatever it is you’re going to Tokyo for (it’s not what it was in the 2000s, you have to search and get recommendations - the tourist trap area is just like any other large metro place in Japan) before flying out.

Get your luggage shipped to the airport.

Mandatum··on YouTube Begins Blocking Users Who Use Adblock
YouTube has been a thorn in the side of Google for a long time. Think about it, what has YouTube brought to Alphabet other than brand recognition? YouTube has already peaked.

It's not profitable. It's a source of a lot of drama, and ill-will toward the company, it doesn't generate much ad revenue, it's no longer a "feat of engineering" that so many people talked about in the mid-2000s - and it seems like the general populace whom generate a lot of revenue by being targeted on the platform (eg US, North America, Western Europe, Australia) are beginning to shift from adblockers is the exception, to adblockers is the default.

I've worked at F500's where uBlock Origin is part of the Chrome Enterprise profile. Why? It brings security, and performance, to the majority of users. Yes there's occasional issues, but it's worth it.

I suspect we'll see YouTube clients built into AdBlocking software (eg I'm pretty sure SponsorBlock has already begun this). AdBlock and uBlock Origin likely won't implement this, at least initially - but I can definitely see this taking off. At that point, what can Google do?

They'll enforce their walled garden and kill off all Google-ToS breaching extensions.

Mandatum··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
Network I had. I add everyone I connect or work with at every job I have. Export a list of all email recipients, and Slack recipients, dedupe. Manually add everyone.

I do this once a year.
