That won't happen. I don't think 'regime change' is going to come off the foreign policy menu, nor is paying back all the debt that is owed. So the space money is going to be eaten by debt payments and more 'regime change' initiatives around the world. I forgot all about foreign policy, I thought there would be no money before, now i KNOW there will be no money for any of that.
It will definitely slow down innovation. Some projects / aspirations will come off the table completely. Mars? Forget about it. All your mars money will be treating AIDS/Malaria/Cancer/Whatever. All NASA and space exploration money will go to feeding poor people and refugees and all manner of charitable causes, these causes will only ever multiply ad infinitum. I think there is really only money for one or the other. You can have a comfy easy welfare state life, or you can explore and reach for the stars.
You can't do discount Mars, or space exploration on the cheap, you basically can't have both. Your welfare state will make it so that you don't ever really have enough money to actually do any kind of space exploration. Sure you can send cheap drones locally within the solar system, but that's all space exploration will ever be from now on.
You are fully correct. The reason SF don't address it, IMO, is that it's a no win situation for them. If they clean up the homeless they'll be forced to make tough choices and enforce public order against people their stated ethos which tells them are oppressed and deserving of unlimited compassion. If they do the right thing and clean the place up there will be a backlash from activists. If they do nothing at all then they don't have to make tough choices, don't have to face backlash, and the frog continues to slowly boil which will be the next administrations problem.
There's stupid and then there's "stupid" putting my tinfoil hat on here: maybe they were allowed to steal the data. I mean really? Oh WOOOPS we stored 613 GB of classified data on an unsecured network in the EXACT place hackers would look... aww that sucks, welp we'll try to do better next time.
I call BS, this level of incompetence smells more like treason disguised as stupidity.
Not comparing googles actions to murder specifically, that's simply you not being able to see the forest for the trees. The only reason they wrote the article is to make it seem like what they did was a proactive moral choice when in reality it was a retroactive action to frame their realization that in supplying AI for the DoD murder bots they would be part of the evil empire. I mean it's literally twisty mustache tier lack of scruples.
They didn't fess up because they realize that the outcome of their actions woudl be bad, they fess up because YOU realize that the outcome of their actions would be bad.
Nobody here now who writes things like "engulfed by white folks" has any knowledge of or claim to any of the events you mentioned. Nobody was forced into the country, nobody is forced to stay here. Nobody is forced to be around white people.
Hmm not really. Google is bad and they should feel bad, you're just handwaving away how bad they are because you like them.
Imagine I wanted to have somebody killed and I hired a hitman to kill them and when I go to pay the hitman I accidentally wire the money to the wrong place and inadvertantly pay off the victims mortgage instead of paying the hitman. Now the victim doesn't die and gets their mortgage paid off. I'm not a good guy what I did is not a good thing, I just fucked up, that's all. Had everything gone to plan the guy would be dead and I would be blameless.
Similarly if everything had gone to plan Google AI would now be powering various autonomous murder bots except they realized that they didn't want to be associated with this, not because they have any morals, but because WE DO. They are still bad.
No, not necessarily. We would see wage depression as supply of applicants depresses wages because the demand remains relatively constant. Which might explain why wages stagnated but productivity simultaneously went up.
"At the end of the day this devolves into tariffs"
No not really, you boil it down to that, but that's simply your framing nothing more. There's also the regulatory environment, so no it's not all about tariffs. There are almost no environmental controls or labor laws in China. So that is a huge factor. There is equal or more possibility that companies wish to avoid the responsibility of ensuring compliance as they do with merely avoiding taxes.
"If you want fat, state protected corporations then fine"
How does restricting the supply of unskilled labor from illegal immigrants and border crossers, visa holders of various stripes have anything to do wit fat protected corporations?
What happened is that all the manufacturing jobs that used to supply middle class lifestyles for the unskilled got shipped to China (or otherwise overseas). Mass immigration has expanded the labor poor diluting earnings for all, and massively increasing competition at the lower ends of the wage scale. "The rich got richer" because there is less competition than ever. Housing will only ever get MORE expensive as more and more people take up more and more space making single family homes pricing more resemble the luxury that they actually are. You could reverse all these trends and fix inequality but I can all but guarantee that you wouldn't employ any of the policy tools necessary to make it happen. Such as restricting immigration for the unskilled and enforcing border controls, thus reducing competition at the lower end of the wage scale and directly improving the lot of poor people in the US. The reduced competition might even incentivize employers to raise wages.
I don't think it's media that fuels are fear of terrorism, I think it's actually the Terrorism. You are implying that the media makes it out to be worse than it is, I disagree. I think the media largely downplays terrorism and makes sure that we all think it just fell out of the sky and it's just crazy people and there's no rhyme or reason to it so there's no way to predict anything or take any action to stop it. The media just mollifies us and makes sure we don't get angry or take any steps, or do anything at all about it all except feel bad for the victims.
Thats essentially what the Mass Effect franchise is. Bioware got sick of being constrained by the Star Wars IP, costs, and continuity and simply created their own "Star Wars" which is actually much better than Star Wars IMO, or it used to be anyway.
"Society" does not encourage greed or selfishness, nor does capitalism. I'll wager that you don't actually care about those things, that you only care about other people having more than you. You are simply wrapping your "concerns" in moral language to make it seem like some sort of altruistic concern. However, you already have more than most people on earth I would imagine, you can already give your money away to the poor. I'll eat my socks if that's actually what you do though. Are you greedy are you selfish? No, just a normal person.
I think that the danger is: you make a law to protect idiots from their own stupidity and end up breaking normal business activity somehow, or creating a regulatory environment that's a pain in the ass for entrepreneurs and whatnot.
I agree that gambling is indeed bad, but gambling is not some sort of outgrowth of capitalism. You do not need captialism to gamble and one does not beget the other. The "game" makers are simply bad people exploiting others. These bad people would simply be bad in a different way in a socialist country.
There are no thieves or bad actors in socialist utopias? Of course there are. Socialism doesn't work now and never will work given human nature. Face it: bad people exist and they will do bad things in whatever context they find themselves in. You are just complaining about the ones you see in this context. However they would just be a different kind of bad actor in a socialist context.
The problems cited by the article are real, and the game makers are shitty people with bad motives. Unfortunately neither government (nor anyone) can make the world idiot proof, sometimes people have to learn from their own mistakes.
No but the poster you are replying to is correct. The article is indeed a "shitpiece" against capitalism, it seeks to paint shitty video games that bilk their users of money as some sort of phenomenon that unique to capitalism. Therefore we need to enact "Big Government" to solve the problem. The author nor the readers generally could not care less about those affected, their only concern are the delicious condemnations of capitalism. Meanwhile in Venezuela, and the USSR, and Vietnam and North Korea and on and on and on... maybe in some fictional country where humans are perfect robots their ludicrous socialist fantasy is possible, just not in the real world.
Some blogs are clickbait simply to capture clicks, or maybe the blog is to pad out somebodys resume and the content may as well be lorem ipsum boilerplate becasue nobody is ever going to read it anyway, but having a blog is better than not having a blog (most of the time). IF you have even ONE good article to show somebody then they tend to assume that your entire blog will have around that level of quality. So is wanting Adsense money stupid? No. Even if all the stuff is low quality then it may as well be MY low quality blog that gets all the his amirite? Thats what they're probably trying to do. IDK there are really too many reasons to enumerate...
> twitter Personal Finance is a cesspool of shitty adsense/amazon affiliate filled blogs
All the solutions that would actually solve these problems are politically unpalatable, all the politicians that would / could provide these solutions would be run out of town.
Also Educated != smart. You can have plenty of educated people but still have bad outcomes in society. If only smart people could vote then that would go a long way to fixing society, but again, a solution like that is immediately off the table. So there are ways and means to fix any and every problem, the problem is nobody will use the tools or they are not even smart enough to know that the wrench is for turning bolts in the first place (the don't even realize the solution in staring them in the face in other words.)
Most people blog to have a blog and don't realize their insights aren't useful. So you're advice is not useful since telling dumb people not to do dumb things is a waste of time, they're too dumb to know what they're doing is a waste of time or doesn't have any useful insights. Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, you being so smart and all.
>The resources needed for industrialism were dug up by slaves.
Not true, Britain had no slaves and it industrialized just fine. You have to feed, house and clothe slaves while "Free" people cost you nothing at all except the cost of labor. Room and board is a greater cost than just an hourly rate. Slavery inhibits industrialization, not enables it.
A little from column A, a little from column B. I've spent too much time on reddit.... HN likes their comments snark free and I understand, It really is better that way. Sometimes I just can't resist though.
