Mahn··on Spain Fines Facebook Over Tracking Users Without Consent
I don't have anything against regulations and fines to keep monopolistic companies in check, but that being said, as an European, I can't help but feel a little appalled that there's so much focus on this and so little on actually creating European Googles and Facebooks.
Mahn··on Sublime Text 3.0
Tangential, but is everyone using Sublime comfortable with the sidebar on the left? Moving the sidebar to the right is the first thing I do in every editor, and the few times I tried Sublime I was surprised that for all its customizability that option doesn't exist. I was skimming through the changelog now and it seems like this is still true today.
Mahn··on Finland's Central Bank Praises Bitcoin
Not mutually exclusive, though. The technology is neat, but there's little to justify $4000 a pop tech-wise. Plus, the vast majority of people putting money on it are not buying to fund development or for its future promise, but to sell someone else for a higher a price.

There's tech in bitcoin, which is neat and will lead to interesting things, and then there's speculation in bitcoin, which is just that and will lead nowhere.

Mahn··on WhatsApp Cofounder on How It Reached 1.3B Users Without Losing Its Focus
Are you suggesting they never had a chance to sell for 19 billion? Because I'm pretty sure all Zuckerberg had to do was pick up the phone in 2009, or even earlier.
Mahn··on From Burn-Out Entrepreneur to Automating My $4M Company
Long story short: Document everything in step-by-step guides, then delegate to other people. No earth-shattering advice here. The author also wants to convince you to use Pipefy for that, apparently a Trello for company processes.
Mahn··on Don't mine Bitcoin, mine Altcoins
I don't think that lead generation ad spending on facebook represents a small subset of the total advertising spend on there. Sure, there are always going to be monolithic companies that market poorly on facebook, but from my experience this is not the norm, and a lot of companies and startups are marketing on facebook without blindly throwing money at it.
Mahn··on Don't mine Bitcoin, mine Altcoins
> Facebook ad spending is a waste; do companies actually get a ROI on all the money they give to Facebook?

Yes they do, and yes they know. Facebook is very effective at reaching qualified leads, it's not "likes" or "engagement" what advertisers are buying.

Mahn··on Google pays Apple $1B (or more)
> Apple wouldn't want to have to offer a subpar default search offering to their users

That's what people thought about maps, too.

Mahn··on Ask HN: Anyone else scratching their heads about coin offerings?
My impression is that ICOs are motivated solely by greed. There isn't a whole lot here other than an insatiable thirst to make money.
Mahn··on How to program an NES game in C
In reality most of the complexity lies in how "close to the metal" it is, not so much on the language or the programming techniques per se. Basically, to program for an old console with limited hardware like the NES, you have to understand how the hardware works at a relatively low level to do something with it. There's no "drawSprite" function that you call and be done with, but rather you have to understand what the video processor can do, how do your feed data to it, how you compose a sprite in a layer, etc etc.

So you learn how the different pieces of the hardware work, how do you instruct them to do things, what are their limitations and so on. And once that clicks, it's not particulary more complex than writing modern code. Like programming today, it's less about typing and more about thinking about how all the dots connect together towards doing what you want to do. You do end up with a lot more code that does a lot less, since there are no abstractions and you do everything by hand. But otherwise it's something that anyone with aptitude for programming can pick up.

Mahn··on Filecoin Suspends ICO After Raising $186M in One Hour
> but it surely looks exciting

Or terrifying, take your pick.

Mahn··on Americans Are Dying Younger, Saving Corporations Billions
I have this theory that in a couple decades or three most of the developed world will enter a health crisis, as everyone will suddenly realize that we've been eating and drinking like shit for a long time. Almost 3/4 of what you can find in your average grocery store today has unnecessary amounts of sugar, salt and/or chemicals added and no one seems to care. Someday we'll look at the food we eat now like the way we see tobacco today.
Mahn··on How to Pick Your Life Partner (2014)
Would I have consensual sex with an attractive celebrity if they took an interest in me? Sure.

Would I fall in love with an attractive celebrity if they took an interest in me? Well, no, not automatically anyway, I would have to get to know this person first and see how I feel about spending time and do things together. I'd definitely not dump a person I've known and loved for years over a fling with an attractive celebrity that I don't really know on a personal level.

You keep saying that sexual attraction and love are the same thing, but they are not.

Mahn··on How to Pick Your Life Partner (2014)
Respectfully, your argument doesn't hold water because it doesn't look like you understand what being/falling in love is. Sexual attraction is 70%-90% visual appearances and mostly biological, but falling in love is not about sexual urges, it's about happiness. We fall in love with the person that brings happiness and joy to our life by merely spending time together, not necessarily the one we want to ram our genitals into.

Most people pursue partners based on sexual urges, sure. But falling in love is a whole other game, and they don't go hand in hand.

Mahn··on To start a billion dollar startup, start looking for problems
For examples of ideas in search of a problem (rather than addressing a problem), see the vast majority of projects that have done an ICO this year.
Mahn··on The Science of Passionate Sex
> Is it possible to accept that and remain monogamous?

I think this is something very personal and varies from person to person. To some sex in a long-term relationship is important, to some it isn't. Some hop from partner to partner, some stay committed for decades. There's probably not a one-size-fits-all and there doesn't have to be.

Mahn··on The Science of Passionate Sex
The other person should care for you, too (for passionate sex to take place, that is).
Mahn··on Stack Overflow Sunsetting Documentation
Most people would tell you that if you seek the community aspect of it, you should go to Reddit, but honestly, I still feel like there's a hole for something in between. A site with the conciseness and technicality of SO but with the community and open-endedness of Reddit is something I'd definitely like to see and contribute to.
Mahn··on Apple Watch sales up over 50% since last year
> Your phone almost certainly has all the functions that your fitness tracker has

No, it doesn't, that's the whole point I was trying to make. My fitness tracker tracks heart beats for example.

Mahn··on Apple Watch sales up over 50% since last year
I wear a fitness tracker. If I'm gonna wear something on my wrist, it ought to do something that my phone doesn't, otherwise it's hard to justify the cost.
Mahn··on The first Bitcoin Cash block has been mined
In my view, as a bystander with no skin in the game, the BCH fork is very much political, so there's no reason why exchanges should not take a political stance in response. It's hardly a question of supporting what "everyone else" supports, Bitstamp has the same position for instance.
Mahn··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
I just resort to using the desktop version on mobile. I can't really stand the current mobile design, let alone their app, way too much space wasted.
Mahn··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
> still reading TC articles

That's debatable (albeit for reasons other than design)

Mahn··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
Most of what you said applies to Surface Books and Surface Pros, you should check them out if you work on Windows. I'm pretty happy with my SP4 myself.
Mahn··on Police investigating stolen laptops discover Bitcoin heist
It's always the wild west when a technology or medium is new, isn't it? The same could be said of the web in the nineties or facebook/mobile apps a decade ago.
Mahn··on A decentralized Bitcoin exchange
That's if you want to trade in real-time, but a slow decentralized exchange still has value for casual buyers and sellers. An exchange is typically both a trading platform and a marketplace, but it doesn't have to do both to be useful.
Mahn··on Facebook to Show Ads on Messenger to Bolster Revenue Growth
I wonder whether Ads are an appropriate way to monetize messaging apps. It's such a fundamentally different context from just mindlessly browsing the news feed on Facebook or Instagram. I'm sure FB has done their testing but, ads in an utility app that you want as little in your way as possible like Messenger or WhatsApp still strike me as something odd.
Mahn··on Underrated Startup Success Factors
More often than not the right timing was the right timing only in hindsight, but I think there is merit to the argument of there being right timing sometimes. It is true that Instagram couldn't have happened before cheap smartphones with relatively high quality cameras, for example. It's not the only factor, but it can have a role depending on what you do.
Mahn··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
Wikipedia is probably the most dangerous procrastination tool on the net. There's not limit there, the rabbit hole just goes deeper and deeper.
Mahn··on How Much Sleep Do Fitbit Users Really Get?
> I usually sleep close to eight hours with 3 to 4 hours of deep sleep

Sounds like you are getting better sleep than most healthy people. I always wondered if one could benefit from a CPAP machine even without suffering from sleep apnea.
