MachineMan··on Dots: Always-on agents
I'm gonna call you Smith, Agent Smith..
MachineMan··on You are no longer invited to dinner

MachineMan··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Don't use it for biology, Dario said, as he turned humans into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.. I reckon that soon, he too will return to dimension X.
MachineMan··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Great comment. Was it really ever ours or do we merely give back what Prometheus stole from the Gods?
MachineMan··on An open letter to Dario: if you mean it, open the weights
"The meaning of ANTHROPIC is of or relating to human beings or the period of their existence on earth." Combine that with his end of humanity warning. The entire company is named after human extinction (a species he is not a part of). He is foreshadowing what he already knows to be true.
MachineMan··on We must pace the frontier
You are cynical but not cynical enough. The idea of a rogue Ai gives plausible deniability when they can blame human hubris, rather than it being seen as a deliberate and calculated attack, the perfect cover story for a sinister scifi plot. Make it look like an accident ehh
MachineMan··on We must pace the frontier
Its not the model, it is the compute that is the bottleneck. Dario says one thing but does the other as he scales energy and compute. It is and has been known that it will be ai that will be blamed for a wipe, that will be coordinated by human actors. If he really wants to not hurt people, he would shut it down. This blog post is therefore a classic case of covering his behind.

What if engineers push out all non-engineer CXOs precisely because of what you are saying. Hypothetically, if you replace all employees with engineers (so all the non-engineering roles) and allow them to optimize processes using LLMs, isn’t this like lean/six sigma on crack?
MachineMan··on Fuck it, make it anyway
I think it’s very human and honest of you to admit that.
MachineMan··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
“Our age of silicon is collapsing” - Christopher Nolan
MachineMan··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
A Chinese company like CXMT will surely fill that unaddressed market the way CXMT is doing for memory. It would be rather unwise for nvidia to leave the door to the market open. AMD is positioned well to grow right now due to their non-Apple sillicon unified ram hardware coming soon.
MachineMan··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Sorry if it came off as combative. The points I made are not mutually exclusive but they are in some cases. There is a difference between someone that chose computer science because Silicon Valley was the next Wallstreet, or someone who has been tinkering out of sheer curiosity since elementary school.

I am convinced that AI will be the tool that creates abundance, but that doesn’t mean human engineering is automatically irrelevant either. AI has already surpassed what humans were able to do, for instance solving certain math problems. My point was mainly that engineers are forced to introspect, and that includes questions about identity, what it means to be human, and the motivations behind their work/hobby.

MachineMan··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Yes, AI shines as a hybrid tool for hyper-generalists or multi-domain experts that can leverage their deep knowledge across various fields but lack the raw hours to execute everything themselves. Strong developers who never knew how to manage a team but should have been product owners based on their broad knowledge and vision of the product and industry.

I agree with your point on refactoring / porting. Retro consoles and homebrew will see growth, probably.

MachineMan··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Not to derail the conversation, but the concept of money itself is on loose screws. One might argue that compute and energy (dare I say expressed in BTC?) is arguably the (world reserve) currency of the future. The current system discounts the value of the hours of the artist based on where that artist was born, rather than on merit, and is the source of a lot of problems including trade wars, extreme globalization, offshoring, mercantilism and the entire industrial stripping of developed nations by those who purposely keep their currencies low and exploit their own population.
MachineMan··on Fuck it, make it anyway
In general creators must do some honest introspection. Did you enjoy the crafts, or did you enjoy the compliments? Did you enjoy the difficult puzzles or the identity derived from a career that gives you the reputation and perceived value of someone who can do a thing most people can’t? Did you enjoy the code itself or the accomplishment of seeing your ideas brought to life? Who remains when the thing you do no longer is the person you are.

AI is not perfect, I remain convinced that handcrafted will always beat AI generated crafts. The IKEA vs the carpenter analogy fails because a carpenter has to create each piece of furniture from scratch, serving only a single customer, where digital products by definition are near zero marginal cost, so it is worth it to throw large amount of human hours at proper code vs AI generated code if the quality is better.

PS: You have intrinsic value, and your skills will also remain valuable, if even for how it teaches you to approach complex problems and think deeply.

MachineMan··on Does the Sumerian King List Align with Paleoclimate Events?
Reality is stranger than fiction.
MachineMan··on Smaller reactors bring nuclear power closer to fulfilling its promise
It could prevent volcanoes from erupting perhaps.

Which means those greedy people don’t have power, but the illusion of power, and the positions at the top are gatekept by intermediaries that serve the one who actually holds the power.

I personally don’t think either communism or capitalism will exist in 10 years from now. We are entering a period of total upheaval, where the very concept of a nation state has become obsolete. I expect global theocracy where robots and ai (incl nanobots) clean up the mess we made in this world, freedom becomes more limited, but abundance and security increases. There will be a renewed focus on community and human connection rather than the run away obsessive focus on materialism and innovation at a pace human beings cannot adapt to. Human labor, cognition, natural resources and policy have always been the elements that dictate whether a nation can develop into a first world country. Labor and cognition are respectively solved by robots and AI.

Correct. This is all planned. Colossal Biosciences has already brought back the Dire Wolf and is working on the woolly mammoth. It is no coincidence that these are younger dryas animals, because they are expecting these animals to thrive in the near future glacial period. Don’t feel guilt tripped into causing this collapse, you have no control over it even though you can do some marginal things to reduce your individual footprint. Whatever needs to happen, will happen. AMOC collapse greens the desert. It also happens to be the region that dictates how affordable fossil fuels are and thus how much of the stuff is burned due to OPEC. If you are religiously inclined, that is meaningful.

MachineMan··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
From my perspective, Stable Diffusion brought HF to the broader public as artists and content creators were showing how to run the python to do local Stable Diffusion which first introduced many to HF.

MachineMan··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
You are right, however they are backed by the european payment initiative and the idea is that it becomes an eu wide standard. Whether they will succeed and how fast, we shall see.
MachineMan··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
Earth has an immune system called the atlantic meridian overturning cycle. When meltwater dillutes the salt concentration too much, it collapses and creates an ice age. Short term catastrophe, long term it will be OK.

I’m pretty sure nonviolence is the way for the future. There is always someone with a bigger gun.
MachineMan··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
Europe has Wero and India has UPI. Right now it is still good but it will get increasingly harder for private companies like Stripe and Paypal to operate as this becomes more embedded as a critical public service provided by governments.
MachineMan··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
The author is anthropomorphizing a language-tamagotchi.

LLMs can reason, reasoning is logic, and as you said yourself it is derived from what humans belief is reasonable. However, there is more to the structure of language, the way mathematics is also a language that ultimately describes the universe.

MachineMan··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
When chips are made from mitochondria and neural nets use microtubules and quantum mechanics maybe. In the meantime... Simulacrum, not consciousness. Conscious turing machine is hyperreality, something that looks more real than reality itself, the simulacrum replacing reality, but it is not consciousness. I recommend anyone to look into roger penrose and stuart hameroff. The TLDR is that they propose the Orch OR theory, which suggests that consciousness is not generated by the brain acting like a standard computer but that tiny, rapid bursts of quantum physics occur in microtubules that create moment-to-moment thoughts and subjective awareness, which hameroff claims is blocked when you undergo anesthesia.

Then there’s also the antenna idea, that consciousness is received rather than created. If the entire universe is conscious, and we are part of it, then there is no separation, just different radio channels we are tuned into.

MachineMan··on Tooltips need a delay, and then they need to skip it
tooltips are important. So important I think they need a dedicated shortcut key, because 1 key to speed up your entire workflow forever and lower the learning curve of new software is worth it. 1 key to highlight all elements with tooltips at the same time, then hoover over it. No delays, no searching and they need to explain concepts beyond a few words so you can get rid of the entire help manual also.
