MVorlm··on Man creatively sneaks onto Delta flight, but gets caught
And like most security measures, humans are the weak link. The scanning system did mark the barcode as already used/invalid, but the staff assumed it was a glitch and let them on.

MVorlm··on Kaleidoscope 4
New features include:

* Syntax Coloring

* Debugger Integration

The app is now a paid subscription($14/month).

MVorlm··on NYPD urges citizens to buy AirTags to fight surge in car thefts
https://chipolo.net/en-us/products/category/chipolo-spot

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HQF72ZM/A/chipolo-card-sp...

I own one, and it works just like an airtag and appears in the find my app. It doesn't have precision feature but everything else works(like using the apple/iphone network to find it)

MVorlm··on Tailscale Sucks
A self-aware click-bait title is still click-bait.
MVorlm··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
In two places. The web client takes _minutes_ to load the artist page. It's slow enough that I get the Firefox warning stating that the page is slowing down Firefox. The web client (seemingly) doesn't load the song/tracklist in chunks and attempts to load every song at once(at least on the artist page).

The second issue isn't specifically a "Navidrome" problem, but every iOS and Mac desktop client I've used(and I've tried _every_ one that Navidrome lists on their site) attempts to load every song on load and basically becomes unusable.

I'm about two notches away from writing my own music streaming server. Navidrone is barely functional for me...and falls under software I hate, but there are no better options.

MVorlm··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
As someone currently running a Navidrome instance with 40k songs...yeah, I wouldn't wish that on anyone(horrible performance), but it is an option I suppose.
MVorlm··on Show HN: Whole Git repo was made with ChatGPT
To be clear, ELI5 isn't a "meme" nor does it mean literally explain something to an actual 5 year old[1].

In reality, it means explain something in plan language without insider terms/definitions.

MVorlm··on Universal Paperclips
It still doesn't save state between reloads or prevent accidentally page refreshes and that makes me sad(still)
MVorlm··on Google Adsense/Admob blocks you for life if you use it before you're 18
GDPR does not fix this situation. There are cut-outs in GDPR that allows companies to store data for longer. Financial/billing/taxes fall under that category.
MVorlm··on Magnus Carlsen retains title after winning lopsided match
GOAT isn't obscure or domain specific and is a very common acronym used online for almost anything competitive and doesn't need any more explanation.
MVorlm··on Show HN: Made a macOS utility that throws garbage styles out of your copy-pastes
Looks an interesting app and does solve a pain point I encounter semi-frequently. I'm usually not one to comment on prices of applications, but $50/$100 for such a small utility is pretty steep. At 20 dollars I may even buy for it occasional use and not even think about it. At your prices I need to compare it to Affinity, kaleidoscope, littlesnitch and see if I derive a similar value from your application.
MVorlm··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
It's not. There's _no_ law that dictates battery size. 100Whr is the largest size you can take on airlines. Economically, no laptop manufacturer is going to make a laptop you can't take on a plane.
MVorlm··on Cryptoqueen: A woman scammed the world, then vanished (2019)

MVorlm··on Full-Bleed Layout Using CSS Grid
min(ch, ...) is the most interesting and potentially useful thing I've learned!

I'm now off to learn more about this magical "ch" unit.

MVorlm··on [dead]
"Now, replace the 'White candidates only' with 'Australian residents only,' and you have a real example of thousands of modern job ads shared around the web every day."

That's an outrageous and insidious comparison to make. Nationality and ethnicity are two different things. Presumably, there are more than just white people in Australia. Job ads with country based limitations are primarily legal considerations. Hiring non-residents in _any_ country generally requires procedures that cost money or time, either in the process itself or hiring a third-party to delegate the process. Nation-based hiring is not racial prejudice.

Now, an analysis of the reasoning why countries(read: not companies) create their immigration policies would be worth an article. But, that's an orthogonal issue.

I understand that this blog article is simply an ad/SEO marketing article. But your point could be made without such statements. It's such an incredulous thing to imply.

MVorlm··on New Toyotas will upload data to AWS to help create custom insurance premiums
I have a "New Toyota", and I was asked before it started uploading data for insurance.
MVorlm··on Mars images rendered in 4K [video]
10 minutes is the the milestone for "mid-roll" ads. As far as I can tell, this video has no ads in the middle.

MVorlm··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
This is incorrect information. H1B "Status" and H1B "Visa" are two separate things.

A common immigration path is F1(Student) -> OPT -> H1B Status. If the person was already in the US(because they're going to a US college) then they would be given H1B status(read: no visa). Getting a H1B visa from the US consulate would be required IFF they: 1) Weren't already in the US, 2) Need to leave and reenter the US.

If the person is _already_ in the US when they receive H1B Status then they don't need to receive a visa. Not having a visa is not illegal or affect work status. A visa simply allows ingress and egress in/out of the country and does not confer work authorization(which is what an H1b "Status" does).

Source: I've gone through this process, and from a family of attorneys.

MVorlm··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
There's no "stealing" or theft here. Based on this article, and the comments on this thread, advertising is part of the package/contract. Restaurants can simply not partner with these services.
MVorlm··on Permanent.org – Nonprofit, secure cloud storage
Not the original commenter but I agree that no service is permanent. That's why any service marketing themselves as such raises an eyebrow from me.
MVorlm··on SpaceX Gets FCC Approval to Sell Wireless High-Speed Home Internet from Space
I don't know. I'm not the one who asked the question. I'm simply clarifying what someone asked.

Alternatively, they could be asking for 'wired' in the where there's a central base station, and each individual home has wired connection to that.

Regardless, I assuming the op _didn't_ mean running a physical wire from a sat in space.

MVorlm··on SpaceX Gets FCC Approval to Sell Wireless High-Speed Home Internet from Space
The op clearly means a traditional wired service like Google Fibre. E.g 'SpaceX Fibre'
MVorlm··on Gimli – A Visual Studio Code extension for front-end developers
Agreed. If this actually has the polish + features it promises then it's worth _far_ more than what's quoted on the KS page. $80-100 dollars minimum.
MVorlm··on Show HN: Favicon Kit – get and embed Favicons from any web site (CDN and API)
Very interesting service! As an aside, I would love to know how someone can afford to run "30+" edge servers for a personal SaaS project. It seems that there will be a paid plan — but for such a niche service I wonder if it's sustainable long term. I ask because:

1) I may be looking for static content cdn(s) in the future for a personal project (would love recommendations!)

2) I would love to know how much money people are spending infrastructurally (at least in the beginning) to kickstart their projects

MVorlm··on UTC Is Enough for Everyone, Right?
IIRC Google uses 4am as the cuttoff. So saying "tomorrow" after that cuttoff will be the following calendar day.
MVorlm··on WhatsApp told to stop sharing user data with Facebook by French authorities
That's the point. If I run a US-based company and have 0 assets in X country, it doesn't matter. EU lawyers would also know this and also wouldn't bring it to court. It's just a waste of everyone's time. I'm certainly not going to do anything If I get a summons from a random country due to some random law. Especially if it means nothing in the country I'm currently located in.
MVorlm··on Show HN: Sanity – A Headless CMS Construction Kit in JavaScript
It's hard for me to trust services like these that don't provide even a paid self-hosted version. Backend lock-in like Parse, but it probably won't get a community to rewrite it. So good luck if they ever go under.
