MTemer··on Brazil sets new record for homicides
Maybe by design, depending on what you mean. I think organized crime and state corruption (often hard to separate the two) thrives under all that chaos. Brazil is HUGE and I see many people asking to bring control back to each of the states.

How that would help I'm not sure but it's like the government is isolated in their own safe island and they are in most cases untouchable, or just get a slap in the wrist. I'm surprised how in the poorest and uneducated areas you can get lynched or beheaded if someones yells "thief" or "rapist" (even if you're innocent) but there isn't any acts of organized violence against the government.

MTemer··on Ask HN: Go or Python? Expanding my toolbelt
For personal reasons I have to stay a couple of years at my current job (back-end and some ops), I do some boring stuff but the payment is nice. I don't want my brain to slow down too much so I'm looking for a language to do random stuff without thinking much about what exactly I'm going to create. But probably something related to web development, cli tools/automation, maybe a desktop app just to put in my CV (Qt?).
MTemer··on Ask HN: Go or Python? Expanding my toolbelt
I think I'm too dumb to learn how to use something like Haskell (properly). I have a memory/attention problem, medication helps but I almost gave up programming for it. Don't get me wrong, my code is highly praised for being moderately ok, but I have to play my strengths.

I was surprised that all of the Elixir hype seems to have died here.

MTemer··on Poll: Is “-3” a whole number?
this sounds like "it's holes all the way down"
MTemer··on Ask HN: Calendar/event manager that doesn't suck?
Don't be. Judging from all the apps I tested, making a good calendar must be a really hard problem (but I never built one myself). At least for my use case. I mean, how much money have MS spent on making the new Outlook web thing, and it doesn't even work? I even tried in another computer with a new account, to see if I was doing something wrong. That's how bad my experience was. And Google stuff isn't that much better either. The lock-in is real. The integration with Google Keep is the best thing I can say about it.

I just didn't got the confirmation e-mail. Tried several times the same day. Maybe it was a temporary problem since I tried again and was able to confirm my account.

Regarding the UI, it's just a matter of opinion. I use a lot of apps with bad UI and don't care but a calendar is something really personal and important for me that I just can't deal with something that doesn't feel natural. But my opinion shouldn't matter since I'm just an overly judgmental dev and not the 99% type of regular, business user.

MTemer··on Ask HN: Calendar/event manager that doesn't suck?
Who needs working calendars when we have Uber.
MTemer··on Ask HN: Calendar/event manager that doesn't suck?
I found it quite a hassle to manage a lot of events. So many e-mail exchanges, links and confusing interactions. It puts too much focus on the "confirmation" part. I couldn't find how to notify users a day before the event date but I'll keep looking. Thanks.
MTemer··on Ask HN: Calendar/event manager that doesn't suck?
No e-mail notifications for the participants, unfortunately.
MTemer··on Ask HN: Calendar/event manager that doesn't suck?
Thanks, I'll take a look.

By the way, the events should be private (and might contain some confidential information).

MTemer··on Ask HN: Did anyone use ruinmysearchhistory and get Google account suspended today?
I'm curious, what if something like this was distributed as malware or viral links (the new rick and roll), would it get a lot of people banned? Would it work as a global privacy tool?
MTemer··on Ask HN: 2FA hardware?
But if you're using accounts in "public" (like in the office) computers, aren't you trading an unlikely bruteforce for a single point of failure: your password manager, who's also in the cloud? Unless you also use 2FA on the password manager and there's no way for a compromised OS to copy your entire (unlocked) password manager DB. Oh god, I went too far.
MTemer··on Ask HN: 2FA hardware?
I always use huge passwords, do you think using an easier to remember ~10 digits password will be secure enough if I use 2FA?

Or there is another attack vector that I'm not aware of?

I imagine if somebody steal my password I would get notified (Gmail) and could easily switch to a new one, no damage done.

MTemer··on Ask HN: 2FA hardware?
Oh I get it now, I misunderstood what Yubico could be used for. Thank you!
MTemer··on Ask HN: How do you encrypt your laptops?
do you lose all your data if the disk suffers from any kind of data corruption?

or can you somehow still mount, unlock and retrieve the files that weren't affected?
