MSFT_Edging··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
This might sound dramatic but you have it a bit backwards.

You can call back to Major General Smedly Butler and his "War is a racket".

WWII got the US out of the remnants of the great depression. The massive industrial push for both our equipment and the lend-lease model was a massive infusion into our economy. It was so huge, that it never really stopped. Our economic model and system was sick, and the military industrial complex(dramatic but apt term) was a large-scale make-work endeavor that would double as an expression of global power and propaganda both home and abroad.

One could take this and begin to see that conflict may be instigated for the sake of the MIC. Al Qaeda wasn't in Iraq, but it didn't stop us from invading, making up claims of WMDs that couldn't be substantiated, then destabilizing the region. The power vacuums then create later conflicts, for more military machinery to be built for.

The HMMV was continued to be sent to the middle east long after we all acknowledged they were death traps for soldiers. Same thing for certain tanks, they kept making them to keep people employed.

The big thing now, is the propaganda worked too well, and we became too focused on giving as much taxpayer dollars to lockheed and raytheon as we could.

We didn't win Afghanistan, Iraq left ISIS in it's wake. But the point wasn't to win, it was to brutalize(externally facing propaganda) and sell weapons. Since the purpose of conflict was so extremely warped to enable the MIC, winning didn't matter, and our ability to win corroded greatly. We won WWII because of our logistics. Those logistics have broken down as we deindustrialized and moved to more and more expensive "smart weapons". Those smart weapons made promises of warfare so advanced, you only need a handful. So we pay millions per missile. Then we use them all up defending against dumb weapons, and we lack the capacity to make more.

Our military is in effect a paper tiger. The real threat of the US military is mass civilian casualty. If we can't take them out with drones, land invasion would be a catastrophe, and then actual WMDs would be deployed to save face. Nuclear genocide is the US military's only real remaining card, as we've devoured the propaganda and rested on our grandparent's laurels while losing sight of what earned the respect.

MSFT_Edging··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I saw that in Rome 13 years ago. Three road workers pulling up some bricks to access a utility. One guy in the hole, two guys outside the hole, one with a tallboy beer, at 930.

I'm sure it comes with a lot of problems but there's something to be said about a relaxed society.

MSFT_Edging··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Gen Z still parties and socializes, but their parties are constantly recorded and posted on social media. There's much higher stakes to getting wasted and making a fool out of yourself in the panopticon.
MSFT_Edging··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
I have a 12 year old Acer C720 that while obviously doesn't run chromeos anymore, it's still useful as a super durable 12'' linux machine.(thankfully it's intel based)

It road around in a backpack while cycling around campus, survived multiple bike spills, knocked off tables half a dozen times.

Really sad we can't get something like this anymore.

MSFT_Edging··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
There's no high ground here. There were riots in Israel after the slightest bit of pushback against torturing prisoners via sexual assault.

Decades prior to Oct 7th, the IDF was shooting children through fences and ethnically cleansing villages.

Israel has been doing a similar thing to "1st amendment auditors", the people who harass random people and police in order to get a reaction and sue. They got the reaction, now Israel is attempting to play the victim. You cannot put people in fences, force them through militarized checkpoints, and allow settlers to harass and assault people in their homes with military backing and even begin to pretend to be the victim.

MSFT_Edging··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
People bought IBM clones to run the same software, not for the love of the architecture.

If ARM processors are regularly incompatible and segmented, we all lose out and end up in isolated silos.

MSFT_Edging··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
It's sorta funny, the existence of Windows' stranglehold has worsened so many generations of thinkpads. The push for the S0 mac-style standby made my 11th gen X1 carbon basically unusable for me in Linux.

The standby battery life is so bad, it will burn through half the battery overnight with the lid closed. The battery life actually seems better when using the laptop opposed to standby.

Other standby modes were removed on a firmware level by lenovo despite the processor supporting it.

I still have my 4th gen X1 carbon, it was an amazing machine for 8 years and I really thought I'd get another 8-year laptop buying the latest X1, but now it sits off and only comes out for specific uses. Bought an m4 air for day-to-day laptop use.

MSFT_Edging··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
It is a soft subject.

Directories and files as computing concepts are ~50 years old while the impact of the printing press is around ~600.

The aspects of computing you deem important may be lost to time within a century, while the "soft subject" of social impact will still be felt.

MSFT_Edging··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
That's not what OP is saying.

They're saying they have a better understanding of the impact of technology, not the specifics of using technology.

MSFT_Edging··on What happened to the Snowden archive
What exactly was the damage he did?

He exposed massive unconstitutional dragnets that made the unaccountable agencies look bad.

If the damage is "makes the US look bad from their illegal surveillance of citizens", then the NSA did that to themselves.

MSFT_Edging··on There's no point at which turning your brain off will work
The long island economy is split between well paid public servants, NYC commuters, and the circular economy of driveway contractors and tile contractors in an arms race for the nicest walking surface.

There are no other jobs on the island that pay decently. Cutting edge engineering work will make you half of what it will in either the DC or Boston areas.

The conductors are highly paid in part because it's the local custom, and part because a third of the economy would collapse if that train stops running.

MSFT_Edging··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
> It is unfathomable that a team of US military (people with families of their own no doubt), would all nod along and agree with your contention.

The Vietnam and Korean wars would like to have a word.

Your belief that the US military is guided by any kind of moral or ethical line is naïve at best.

MSFT_Edging··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
I disagree. It's pretty clear the complaint is the lack of responsibility or care for the dangerous science at the center of the movie.

The complaint wouldn't be remotely the same if Hammond was taking the power he was playing with seriously. His character is the villain, he ignores every warning and almost kills his grand children.

In the case of the PS5 Linux project, the researcher who has worked towards the skills required to find these bugs has a greater respect, moved slower, had time to think.

People playing with the enormous power of LLMs finding hypervisor bugs and throwing it in the fire have no respect for the work.

MSFT_Edging··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
It sounds like he had already found it the old fashioned way, then the noobs sic'd the LLMs on it, found it, and he told them "hey chill, we knew about this, don't ruin it" and they ruined it.

To quote Dr Ian Malcolm:

"If I may... Um, I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here, it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now [bangs on the table]"

MSFT_Edging··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
There were suspicious rednecks shooting out power stations a couple years ago.

The FBI routinely finds mentally ill people to convince/encourage/fund a terrorist attack and arrest them after they purchase materials with FBI money and call it a sting.

I don't think it's nearly as hard to find someone as you think.

MSFT_Edging··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
> Iran can't have a nuclear weapon. It's an intolerable premise

Actions have consequences. The continual attack on the sovereignty of countries around the world has made nuclear weapons one of the few ways to avoid being a client state of the US at the expense of your own population. Iran has figured out another method it seems.

This is blowback. The simple lesson that we refuse to learn.

MSFT_Edging··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route

MSFT_Edging··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
Glad I'm not the only one with this complaint.

I've been playing music for 20 years, learned and forgotten plenty of music theory. The only way I actually "grok" it, is by re-deriving the whys, but then that slows my learning to a crawl and I begin to forget the earlier lessons.

The memorization doesn't work well for me. I can read music, I can derive scales and chords, but the memorized knowledge of "this chord is technically the same as this one so we'll start calling things other things but it all means the same thing" gets me totally lost.

They don't need to go after everyone. They just need to make an example of a few, ie 40 years in prison for "moving evidence".

MSFT_Edging··on ICE Has a $2M Contract for Spyware That Can Hack Phones Without a Click
The real terrifying aspect of this whole story has nothing to do with Milo Vs ICE.

It's the fact that these previously cartoonish figures on Twitter are now wielding some level of power.

People love to say "oh just get off those bad social medias", but that fails to recognize how there is now multiple social media sites exercising a high level of coercion and misinformation that is injecting the previously goofy "it's just online" into real life.

The white nationalism that has been boosted by Elon and co IS REAL. It will have lasting effects on every facet of our society. The people who used to be internet clowns are now deporting their enemies.

I can't emphasize this enough, this is BAD.

There is no one with any level of morals or ethics at the wheel. It makes too much money to tear apart society. You can bring up endless cliches, "mainstream media", "billionaires", "politics". But the fact is, news channels have spent endless hours covering Hassan(the twitch streamer) and avoiding actual news. Nearly every facet of society has been captured to manipulate us, and there is no good ending for any of this.

MSFT_Edging··on ICE Has a $2M Contract for Spyware That Can Hack Phones Without a Click
They're suggesting[1] they'll be attempting arrests at polling locations, which due to the statistics on fraudulent votes(statistically microscopic), equates to interference and intimidation since we know ICE isn't beyond arresting US citizens to harass them. This will have a chilling effect on citizens who are remotely non-white, who may avoid voting in person due to the risks associated with interacting with the under-trained ICE forces.

Additionally, USPS's current plans[2] for purging mail-in votes will disenfranchise the other method of voting.

MSFT_Edging··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
This tidbit should show people how the line between "terrorist", "freedom fighter" and "useful lackey" is razor thin.

You should never take the "terrorist" label at face value.

The US funded the Mujaheddin in the 80s in Afghanistan. Their first moves upon receiving the weapons was to throw grenades through the windows if Girls' schools.

They began as the "useful lackey", and the US lost control of the Wahabist movement that was amplified to fight Communism. Then they were "freedom fighters" to the religious extremists, and "terrorists" to fight a war against.

In your own example, Al-Sharaa(a product of weaponizing Wahhabism) did actual terrorism, and then was able to squeeze back into the "useful lackey" position, like many "terrorist"s have before him.
