Lutzb··on Do you like to read? I can take over your Kindle with an e-book
Jumping to a random page is really, the biggest issue with my Kindle. I could never figure out what causes it, so I could avoid triggering it.

Does anyone know?

Lutzb··on A YouTube chat about chess got flagged for hate speech
Superficial Intelligence.
Lutzb··on Charlie Bit My Finger video to be taken off YouTube after selling for £500k
The whole concept of wealth feels like a pyramid scheme.

Your second paragraph could be applied to any non-crypto asset class. The only difference I can see is that crypto just made this scheme more obvious, unobfuscated then let's say the stock market with its different investor classes.

Lutzb··on Google fined €100M by Italian antitrust over Google Play abuse of dominance
The fix is not fines. Threat to split the company.
Lutzb··on How Atari 2600 Game Pitfall Builds Its World
This is a perfect place to mention Ben Frys distellamap project https://benfry.com/distellamap/

It creates stunning visualizations of vcs game code.

Lutzb··on Valve accused of ignoring existing RCE vulnerability in Source games for 2 years
The scrum master decides the work? Why has agile become such a mess?
Lutzb··on Kubernetes Failure Stories
Depends on what you compare. If you compare mainframes vs k8s I would say reliability is not on par yet. If you compare commodity systems with simple monolithic apps vs k8s system maybe we just reached parity.
Lutzb··on 20% of requests for Wikimedia Commons are for one image of a flower
In the early 2000s a friend of mine was an active seller on ebay. He shot his own product pictures and professionally designed the description pages. Soon enough his content was stolen by competing shops, hotlinking the images from his server.

Ebay didn't care. So obviously the only option was to create a script that would randomly change the images to something unpleasant (think early 2000s rotten internet content).

Good times.

Lutzb··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
We are also on GSuite (Workspace now?). I am currently considering moving everything to Office 365. However I am not sure about the photos part.
Lutzb··on MasterCard to push up fees for UK purchases from EU due to Brexit
The EU really needs to get better at educating everyone what it actually does and why it exists. How much money they spend every year and how much the EU actually costs every citzen in Europe on average.
Lutzb··on Woman may have tried to sell Pelosi computer device to Russians, FBI says
While I agree that everyone can be manipulated and we should never consider us immune to manipulation, I would still argue that certain groups of people are more easily manipulated.
Lutzb··on America’s Vaccine Rollout Is Already a Disaster
What confuses me the most is that people seem to have accepted the status quo. After all, it is your money that pays for all the government expenses and you can directly influence how this money is allocated through elections (municipal, state, federal levels). But somehow the electorate is unwilling to express their disagreement in elections.
Lutzb··on iMac G3 – The Mac that saved Apple
I have an 2nd gen eMac sitting next to me. Just installed 10.5.8 yesterday. It was my main machine in the early 2000s.

Firewire connectivity for external hdds was magical. The screen is still nice. However the fan noise is and was always terrible. With some mods it became bearable.

Lutzb··on Google is getting left behind due to horrible UI/UX
When Google Mail was invite only, it was a revelation of what a web mail client could be. Fast, forward thinking in the way mails were presented. Then it became a monstrosity that I can no longer recommend to anyone.

Suddenly Google Inbox came along. Fast, simple, focused packed with useful new features like mail grouping and content extraction. And it was killed off after roughly two years without any of the features being migrated to another product.

It seems like Google became unable to innovate in the basic services they once revolutionized.

Lutzb··on Bitcoin’s Price Breaks All-Time High: Here’s Why It Happened
Thanks that was very informative.
Lutzb··on Why did we wait so long for the bicycle? (2019)
In case of dragons there might also be helicopters around.

I guess the idea that cars would be around after the apocalypse comes from the diesel engine, which can basically run on vegetable oil.

Lutzb··on Bitcoin’s Price Breaks All-Time High: Here’s Why It Happened
Ok, so I've heard that tether printing story over and over. Is there a reputable source for these claims?
Lutzb··on It’s Time for the Eternal September to End
There is a pattern here, I've seen this over and over for the last 25 years. Every community has something like a resident troll. This person opposes the social concerns us and mostly never contributes positively. His arguments have been debunked analysed over and over but he keeps on posting.

Has this ever been researched? Named?

Lutzb··on Nuclear power: Are we too anxious about the risks of radiation?
Sorry, my comment was not meant to imply that _all_ future costs are covered by this. Just that there is a concept to factor in costs that would impact future generations.

This amount factored in will always be political in nature.

Lutzb··on Nuclear power: Are we too anxious about the risks of radiation?
I am sure that you are right. Factoring _all_ costs is near impossible and as such the Ewigkeitskosten will not cover all the environmental impact ever.

What I meant is, that there is a concept to factor in such costs at all. Is it "complete" - surely not. Is it at least a concept that could be applied when talking about incurring costs for future generations? IMHO absolutely.

Lutzb··on Sonos is spying on me (and you)
I hope that in the future we will get some insight on how sonos became the company it now is. When they started there were no mandatory accounts, no spying, dedicated remotes (i.e. no analytics). I really wish we could get back to this time.
Lutzb··on Nuclear power: Are we too anxious about the risks of radiation?
That is factully incorrect. Even if Germany had left nuclear on a level of 1995 and replaced aging plants with new plants of the same capcity the net nuclear output combined with renewables would not be enough to offset coal/gas/oil. See https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stromerzeugung
Lutzb··on Nuclear power: Are we too anxious about the risks of radiation?
In Germany the concept of "Ewigkeitskosten" ist factored in for coal and nuclear.
Lutzb··on Google announces Pixel 5, Pixel 4A 5G, and Pixel 4A
I also own a 2XL and really enjoy it. Sadly google will stop supplying updates this fall.
Lutzb··on Rethinking the Science of Skin
What was your hair routine once you stopped using shampoo? How long is your hair?

I have medium length hair and everytime I try to stop using shampoo/just use water my hair gets sticky and oily.

Lutzb··on Head asleep, body awake
Whenever I experience sleep paralysis and want to wake up, I start wiggling my toes. Somehow this triggers my body to wake up. YMMV
Lutzb··on Why IBM doesn’t agree with Google’s Open Usage Commons for the Istio project
Based on the blog post its even worse. IBM and Google agreed to hand over the Istio trademark and project to the CNCF when Istio reached a certain maturity. Now it seems that Google unilaterally decided to not honor the agreement and keep the project and trademark by handing it over to their own organisation.

disclaimer: work for IBM, but not on istio.

Lutzb··on The Walkman, Forty Years On
I remember when we were all rocking walkmans/aiwas and just accepted the mediocre sound quality of our mix tapes. CDs were ubiquitous but most portable players were prone to skipping and there was no economic way to create mix tapes on CDs for us. The day I bought a portable Sharp mindisc recoder and created the my first digital CD to Mindisc mix via an optical connection was eye opening. I cannot overstate what a game changer it was in creating portable CD quality mixes.
Lutzb··on MaXX Interactive Desktop: A Re-Implementation of the IRIX Interactive Desktop
Just yesterday I started a VM of beta2 of HaikuOS for a good dose of nostalgia. Some observations: the responsiveness of the UI is instantaneous. So much so that it feels alien nowadays. Also the UI does not waste space, but at the same time it does not feel cluttered. Laying out windows feels more organized than Windows 10 or recent macOS. I can't really point out why. Lastly, having dedicated window borders is so useful for aiming the mouse pointer when reszing. At some point our UIs became more a design than a utility.
Lutzb··on Google will delete new accounts' data by default in 18 months
