I worked with IBMers. The main priority for a lot of them is to ensure continuous employment for themselves and their buddies. They'd add unnecessary complexity to a product to stretch out the development for another couple of years. And they work at leisure pace for tech. Actual 9 to 5, many coffee breaks. They can't compete.
But they don't have production. How can they develop successfully without running silicon in a fab?
They are normalizing Apple Vision look so it looks less weird when you switch.
You can look no further than masking for Covid prevention. It makes sense, it works, it's relatively easy but social pressure is strong enough to force the majority to make a suicidal decision not to. We are so, so screwed.
I frequently see such requests in a local Facebook group aptly named "Exit 10 and 11" (of a highway)
The concern is that it won't cannibalize sales, it would cannibalize IA64 manager's job and status. "You ship the org chart"
"Oh, you have a PhD in Chemistry? I hated orgo in college..." I heard it often enough to suspect some kind of a collusion. But no, there is no collusion, just old crummy dudes gatekeeping knowledge to preserve their status, and the departments allowing them to do so.
Somebody from HR admitted to me that they often do it to simply trim the applicant pool to a more manageable size.
This makes perfect sense. In the early 2010s I worked with what remained of IBM development and was surprised at the dysfunction, complete lack of manufacturing culture and engineering approaches. I couldn't believe that this culture could produce a successful product. Guess what, it actually didn't.
We all saw the "draw the owl" picture. Step 1 is easy step 2 is easy but then the rest appears impossible. Why not make a series of small, doable steps that lead to the result? The "hardness" of many things is not exponential, it's linear or even less dramatic.
And alternative explanation is that he's really nothing special. There are literally dozens of people like him in my social circle. Heck, my very spouse has a more impressive school record. The difference could be connections. He lucked out with his circle and a field of study.
