Longhanks··on Google shuts down GPay app and P2P payments in the US
Sure, and that takes 24 hours to be processed (business days only). And IBANs are not very user friendly.

In the US, this is solved by PayPal. Not sure what's taking so long for europe to launch a competitor.

Longhanks··on Microsoft AI spying scandal: time to rethink privacy standards
Sure, because any attempt to be morally right instead of pleasing the shareholders is struck down by management. You might even risk to penalize your future career.

Most engineers are engineers, not company politicians. That doesn’t mean they don’t see the greater picture, it’s just not worth it dealing with corporate bullshit (or even endangering).

Longhanks··on You'll regret using natural keys
How about not doing that?
Longhanks··on America's commute to work is getting longer and longer
> It's not more cruel than introverts forcing extroverts into not socializing.

Well that's the point: Society has made it acceptible for extroverts to force introverts into socialising, but the other way round is somehow inacceptible.

> Having fun at work is no more a right than not having fun at work is a right.

Having or not having fun is no right in itself anyway. Companies that force introverts into situations they are uncomfortable with are eventually going to lose them. The extrovert's fun stops where it is actively harming the introverts. Undermining introverts' feelings by making them feel uncomfortable in order to have fun is harassment.

Longhanks··on America's commute to work is getting longer and longer
Still, imho it is somewhat cruel that society has simply decided that extroverts can and should force introverts into socializing. "You need to attend this meeting in person because I insist" ist perfectly acceptable, while "you need to leave me alone because I insist" is considered rude, antisocial, "not a teamplayer" yadda yadda.

> Some people get more done and have more fun working in an office with other people.

It is not the job of employees to provide extroverts the ability to "have more fun".

Longhanks··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
You can message anyone using the internet.
Longhanks··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
> Where are you living, if you don't mind sharing? I don't know about any place where expressing eurosceptic views would get you called "far right", let alone a Nazi.

Try the largest German-speaking subreddit, for example.

If those are what's bothering you, nothing stops you from quitting right now.
Longhanks··on Ask HN: Can anyone recommend a Windows Systems programming book?
I'm not sure I understand, the APIs are opaque HANDLEs, nothing prevents me from passing a file handle to ShowWindow(), just as nothing prevents me from passing a timerfd to write(), of which neither makes any sense.

PowerShell is .NET and operates a few more abstraction layers above the Win32 API.

Longhanks··on Ask HN: Can anyone recommend a Windows Systems programming book?
In Linux, everything is a file / a file descriptor. In Windows, everything is a handle (except sockets, which are copied from BSD).

In Linux, configuration is done via plain text files. In Windows, there is the registry.

In Linux, there is the root filesystem, where everything else is mounted beneath. In Windows, there is C: and more.

In Linux, the native string encoding is UTF-8 code units stored in char of one byte size. In Windows, the native string encoding is UTF-16, stored in wchar_t of two bytes size.

In Linux, there is fork. In Windows, there is no fork.

In Linux, there is no unified graphics API. There is GTK and Qt for UI, and OpenGL and Vulkan for games (roughly speaking). On Windows, there is Win32, WinForms, WPF, WinUI, DirectX and also OpenGL and Vulkan.

No need to worry, the EU tries the same every few weeks.

Longhanks··on Gio UI – Cross-platform GUI for Go
In what way does GCC play any role in cross platform GUIs whatsoever? It’s a very small niche on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Visual C++, respectively LLVM/clang are much more dominant on those, and even then they are barely the right tools for GUI (maybe except Windows, but even then competing with .NET).
Longhanks··on Gio UI – Cross-platform GUI for Go
It isn't native on any other platform either.
Longhanks··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
The legal explanation clearly states it is applicable to highways only. I'm sure 25mph / 40kmh is not the intended way of driving there.

So yeah, I still don't believe you that I'd be fined for driving 25mph in an area, where 25mph is the speed limit.

Longhanks··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
But it won’t if you go over the speed limit?

I’m not sure what a self driving car is supposed to do here. Hell, as a foreigner, I myself wouldn’t know what to do.

Longhanks··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
> It absolutely refuses to drive faster than the speed limits, going 25 on two lane main streets where everyone expects you to go 40.

This is not an issue with self driving but rather law enforcement.

Longhanks··on State of the Terminal
zsh starts in 0.1s for me. 1000ms is a very noticable latency to me...
Longhanks··on State of the Terminal
True, but no matter the terminal, you still have to deal with either cmd or PowerShell (and its horrendous startup time), "active code pages", and the fact that you cannot write UTF-8 to stdout without it getting messy - you need WriteConsoleW and/or SetConsoleOutputCP but that affects the whole environment, ... cli on Windows was and is painful.

Longhanks··on Deletion of user account
Well, judging by how incredibly many EU citizens emigrate to Switzerland, which is directly caused by the bilateral treaties, there's certainly interest from both parties to negotiate. Switzerland also pays raw cash to the EU as part of the deal.

I'm not sure how long the EU can afford to further alienate countries that pay net positive into it's wallet, after losing the UK and the continuing rise of euroscepticism.

Longhanks··on Deletion of user account
I don't know what point you are trying to make with your snark, but bilateral treaties are much easier to alter or cancel if one party so desires, and public opinion in Switzerland is that they were definitely the right choice and the way to go forward. They are actively being negotiated.
Longhanks··on Deletion of user account
Really not trying to be devil's advocate here, but the company is based in Switzerland, and neither Switzerland nor UK are in the EU.
Longhanks··on The European Union's remarkable growth performance relative to the United States
Which is not in itself a natural phenomenon - Spotify for example did not get wiped out by Apple Music or Google Play/YouTube Music. Europe's local Facebooks and Twitters just weren't that good.
Longhanks··on Are We Modules Yet?
Which is going to murder your compilation times. Modules do it better, the MS Office team claims the following: Worst case: 0.9% regression compared to PCH - Best case: 21.2% improvement compared to PCH

(From https://m.youtube.com/live/H6GQUg5JquU?si=1iC_OvRQ_MprzDTQ&t...)

Longhanks··on Are We Modules Yet?
Really? For me, it has been almost exclusively management not wanting to invest the manpower necessary for the adoption.

If the technology stack allows it, I assume most passionate developers would develop rather with newer than older toolchains.

Longhanks··on Are We Modules Yet?
Qt5 is in maintenance mode. Qt6 has long been released.
Longhanks··on Are We Modules Yet?
You know any other language that uses the header/cpp split likes C/C++ do?

This is C++es way of finally getting rid of them, akin to Swift or Rust.

Longhanks··on The European Union's remarkable growth performance relative to the United States
Hah, you're right - sorry for the confusion and thanks for the note, I'm not a native English speaker :)
Longhanks··on The European Union's remarkable growth performance relative to the United States
There's lots of value in being able to influence huge portions of the population. The fact that you consider it morally wrong does not make it invaluable to others.
