Longhanks··on Writing your own C++ standard library from scratch
From a dogmatic point of view, this might've been correct at some point in time. But, as the links from above clearly point out, most people use "STL" and "C++ standard library" interchangeably (including the very maintainers of one of the most populous C++ standard library implementations), without excluding certain parts of one or the other.
Longhanks··on Writing your own C++ standard library from scratch
Yet, Microsoft's own implementation was open sourced in 2019 in the repo "microsoft/STL" and in the second line of the readme claims the C++ standard library be also known as STL and the readme continues to use the term STL to refer to the C++ standard library.

Longhanks··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
Why are you projecting your own feelings onto others?

There’s plenty of people who write C, there’s plenty of newcomers who start writing C and if they’re willing to, they can find guidance, mentoring, and tooling to improve their skills. If that’s not the path you want to pursue, that’s fine. But C isn’t going anywhere soon and if you go to any university/college, there’s lots of C being taught and lots of people eager to learn.

Longhanks··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
Well, one side just quit.

And that particular side was told by Linus Torvalds himself that his way of Social Media brigading is inappropriate for kernel development, and that the current process works.

I choose to believe Linus. His work on and guidance of the kernel used to and still does work pretty great.

Longhanks··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
> This infighting is only going to hurt the kernel in the long run. Every time this "discussion" comes up, I walk away with the feeling that Linux kernel developers are unreasonably hostile and impossible to work with. It makes me wonder why new people would ever bother trying to contribute anything.

Well, this is your take, as you explicitly wrote "I walk away with the feeling". My take is: The kernel developers are the ones doing the actual work, which legitimates their opinion of doing things. If too many people aren't happy with the way the linux kernel is developed, they are free to fork it and develop in the way that they see fit.

Luckily, the kernel seems to be doing fine.

Longhanks··on UK demands access to Apple users' encrypted data
To what extent is a country's relevance (whatever that even means) the decisive factor in determining what it is allowed to demand?
Longhanks··on Apple Invites
If you feel your ability to interact with your friends and family is threatened by some business launching a service, you should seriously question your friends and family and/or your and/or their social/communication skills.
Longhanks··on Some flag emojis aren’t working on Chrome on Windows
Also, transgender is not a country. The flags don't necessarily represent countries.
Longhanks··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
Well if you wonder you should conduct some simple research, but be prepared to have your opinion challenged. Swift ist doing very fine and much more popular than ObjC (again, if you don't believe it, invest 5 minutes into research).
Longhanks··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
The Swift compiler, LLVM, Swift Standard Library, CoreDispatch, the Swift Package Manager and the Swift LLDB debugger are all FOSS and allow you to compile, debug, deploy, sell, buy and ship any binary you want under the terms of the Apache License 2.0.

Deployment of any software (unrelated to Swift) on Apple's platforms is entirely unrelated (and even then, at least on macOS you and any other user can install, sell, buy (...) any binary as desired).

Longhanks··on Bitwarden is turning 2FA on by default for new devices
I hate the cumbersomeness of 2FA and am prepared to and take full responsibility for the consequences of not using it.

This is not a good change for me. This annoys me. I will not be using or considering Bitwarden going forward.

Longhanks··on Apple interoperability efforts under EU law falls short, advocacy groups argue
Compliance is a very binary thing in this matter. Either Apple complies, or they don't. It's the the EU'a job to fix the legislation, the legal system does not care about "not faithfully honoring the spirit/intent".
Longhanks··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
Well, then >95% of users won't be using $FEATURE. Simple as that. The fact that users for some reason no not consent to $FEATURE the way corporations/shareholders would want them to does not give anyone the right to stop asking for consent in the first place.
Longhanks··on The legacy of NeXT lives on in OS X (2012)
Apple is pretty clear in it's intention of making SwiftUI the blessed UI toolkit, however, they haven't deprecated AppKit or UIKit in any way and keep updating it, as they demonstrate at every WWDC with "what's new in AppKit" (e. g. for 2024: https://youtube.com/watch?v=McKYDogUICg).

They also provide means to mix-and-match AppKit and SwiftUI in both ways. In no way are they trying to "have you believe it's all SwiftUI now". It is simply the next generation of UI frameworks.

Longhanks··on RGFW: Single-header C99 window abstraction library
X11 is utterly broken for multi-monitor setups with different resolutions at different scales (e. g. builtin laptop screen @1.25x, external display at 1x or some variation of that). With high resolution screens (e g. 4k at only 27"), that setup is not uncommon anymore.

(Wayland is broken in very many other ways, though, so you trade one evil for... 5 others).

Longhanks··on Steve Jobs, NeXTSTEP, and early object-oriented programming (2016)
Yes, there is interop at the linking level. I was however explicitly stating that you can mix and match both ObjC and C++ within the same source files and as long as you don't violate the language rules of one with what's allowed in the other (e.g. giving your ObjC variable the name template), then absolutely any features, even language-wise, are supported. You can have C++ RAII destructors call ObjC methods. You can have C++ classes with an NSArray member. You can have a std::vector as a property of your ObjC class. You can mix and match libdispatch, std::call_once, ObjC blocks and C++ lambdas.

No other language comes close to this incredible source-level interop. Here be dragons, but there's also lots of opportunity (and fun, from a programming languace theory perspective).

Longhanks··on Steve Jobs, NeXTSTEP, and early object-oriented programming (2016)
There's even more magic: You can even use/include/write/mix and match ObjC with C++, within the same source file - C++ classes calling ObjC methods, ObjC methods instantiating C++ classes, it's all there. No other language comes close to this kind of interop with C++ and it is one feature that Swift will never be able to match (albeit intentionally).
Longhanks··on Rust Needs an Official Specification
A more accurate title would be 'Marc Needs an Official Rust Specification.' It’s entirely possible that the Rust community’s needs don’t align with this.
Longhanks··on C++ String Conversion: Exploring std:from_chars in C++17 to C++26
std::expected is new in C++23, std::from_chars was introduces in C++17. Obviously, 2023 features were not available in 2017. Changing the return type now would break everybody's code, with very little benefit, you can easily wrap std::from_chars.
Longhanks··on Understanding the Layout Process in Qt Widgets
Widgets imitate one of the native UI toolkits (Win32 CommonControls, macOS AppKit) and can be embedded within those, and native widgets (HWNDs/NSViews) can be embedded within QWidgets.

QML is a strange GPU canvas world that looks mostly alien and behaves just so slightly more different that it is immediately noticeable and annoying.

Longhanks··on Home to Anything JavaFX Related
I don't remember Java being any more lightweight than Electron. Both are super heavy, easily recognizable (because of there non-native nature and general subpar performance), have giant binaries/payloads. Especially Swing. Noone has ever complimented IntelliJ on its responsiveness... (IntelliJ is great nonetheless)
Longhanks··on Apple's requirements are about to hit creators and fans on Patreon
Both him getting fired and possibly dying earlier are directly related to the fact that the man does not easily change his mind. For his company, this turned out to be the better way, yes. For his body, it may have been better to go some other way. Either way, the point is that Steve Jobs does not easily change the course that he himself set.
Longhanks··on Apple's requirements are about to hit creators and fans on Patreon
You mean the guy that literally had to be fired from his very own company because he refused to change course, the guy that most probably died earlier than necessary because he did not change his stance on pharmaceutical medicine?

I believe he would very much love the current Apple Tax system and would eagerly fight the EU in court for this, both out of spite and out of arrogance for "his" Apple.

Longhanks··on Instagram Is Over
What a giant click bait lie. Instagram is far from over. Sure, there's TikTok now aswell, but I've yet to see Instagram get to the "no longer cool/now unnecessary" status like Facebook. At least in those social circles that I frequent, both for private users as for influencers.
Longhanks··on Emotional about X11: I'm creating a pure X11 “emoji keyboard”
I haven't had screen tearing on KDE 5, now 6, in the last at least 5 years with Intel and/or NVIDIA graphics.

This is not a problem of X11 itself.

Longhanks··on Apple okays Epic Games marketplace app in Europe
No, for now, there are investigations whether Apple is compliant or not. Vestager's opinion does not automatically become the truth.
Longhanks··on Wrong Map of Europe
No, Switzerland does not have a capital de jure.

Longhanks··on Swift Static Linux SDK
AFAIK they claim ABI stability only for Apple platforms, explicitly neither Linux, nor Windows. Has that changed?
Longhanks··on Apple is finally bringing RCS messaging to the iPhone
* in the EU

So, won't help with Americans or any other part of "the rest of the world".

Longhanks··on Apple is finally bringing RCS messaging to the iPhone
Cross-messenger groups are not a thing between WhatsApp and any other messaging app, your snark isn't helping any point.

"The rest of the world" is also not the whole rest, there‚a China, Japan, Korea, with WeChat, KakaoTalk, ...
