Lol_Lolovici··on Google Admits Handing over European User Data to US Intelligence Agencies
Which is not what they always do. Microsoft got some nice fines from the EU, I think more than once even.
Lol_Lolovici··on Google+ is the fastest website to ever reach 25 Million visitors
The comparison is indeed useless. Also google+ isn't even launched yet. It's still "field trial" where "a small number of people" participate. For large values of small I guess.
Lol_Lolovici··on Google’s YouTube Uses FFmpeg
FFmpeg can also be compiled with an LGPL license so it can be linked in commercial products.

Also executing an external GPL library/binary from a commercial product (no direct linking) is not in direct contradiction with GPL terms (although it's a gray area where most companies would probably not want to go).

Lol_Lolovici··on Regulation, not technology is holding back driverless cars
I suspect you will then be able to exercise driving in a more controlled, and most likely more interesting than everyday city driving, environment the same way it is now for kart circuits and the like.
Lol_Lolovici··on [dead]
Yes, it's just the link that is from a romanian site.
Lol_Lolovici··on Heart Rhythm as Password (Apple Patent Application)
No, it's because an evil person will cut off your finger in order to gain access. He can't rip out your beating heart and all the sanguine system so this is a much better biometric from a personal safety viewpoint.
Lol_Lolovici··on Bit.ly is Harmful to Your Reputation
> our API responses and the innumerable clients and scripts that use these methods aren't currently designed with this state in mind

Well, you could just return the original URL when it is already shortened and this way there is no new "state" to worry about.

Lol_Lolovici··on Internet threatens rare species, conservationists warn
What I don't understand is why would it be the internet's fault people are buying and selling illegal stuff. It is just an instrument for people who used other ways before the internet existed.

And besides that how is the internet making poaching easier? You need somebody to physically and illegally hunt the creature (internet doesn't help here) and somebody to receive the creature through customs and some means of transportation (again the internet doesn't help here). So the only thing internet helps is faster searching and maybe paying for said creature. I doubt this was the most difficult thing before the internet came around.

Lol_Lolovici··on Seth Godin Tries Out Brandjacking
Has anybody seen exactly how "taking control of your brand" works? It would be interesting to know how exactly replying on the left sidebar, or whatever, works and how it impacts the original tweet/forum/etc. I see a lot of people are commenting here about how this is blackjacking because the company would filter out the bad information about them and let only nice stuff show. So far I don't see evidence of that or even how that would work so if somebody knows please share.

The way I see it this brand site would be more interesting for the marketing/public relations department of a company that wants to see every discussion about them in one place and jump to the actual content where they want to reply, and not as interesting a page for other people outside the company.

Lol_Lolovici··on Death spiral
I don't how you read the article and understood that he recommends to "keep things the way they are" as you say.

Godin stated the exact thing that you say: "Instead of squandering it in a long, slow, death spiral, do something else. Buy a new platform. Move...."

What I understand Godin says is that if you cut costs you shouldn't do that just to keep the company afloat but to invest the money you "saved" in something new.

Lol_Lolovici··on MacBook Pro, Thousands of Colors
Damn nearly everybody was a poor peasant or slave in the 1000s, people where getting upset over nothing.

Just because the status quo is such it doesn't mean it is good and cannot be improved. I was searching for a quality LCD screen lately and I couldn't find a reasonable 8-bit screen at any shop, just 6-bit. I read a lot of reviews from seemingly professional sites and they all say the same thing: 8-bit MVA, PVA or IPS panel types are much much better than 6-bit TN at anything except price and maybe a bit of extra latency (not important for anyone except hardcore FPS gamers). The sad state of affairs is that all the reasonably priced 8-bit screens I wanted were out of stock for an unknown period of time at all shops (like the HP LP2475w) or out of production for good. It seems I'll have to pick the best of the worst and be happy just because everybody has the same.

When your product is theoretically a pro product aimed as such and is pretty expensive to begin with you expect the best quality out of all the components. I own a PowerBook Pro and this thing is amazing. More than 5 years old and and everthing works perfectly except some scratches on the metal surface due to drops from heights. The screen in it is the best I ever saw, even compared to new expensive Dells, HPs and others I saw at friends and colleagues. It will be a sad day when I have to change it with a MacBook Pro and the screen will be worse.

Lol_Lolovici··on The Prisoners’ Paradox
As I understand the problem it is identical to the Monty Hall problem if you map survival-prize and doors-prisoners. The opposite of survival is death and the opposite of prize is nothing.

So when the guard says B is sure to die he is actually opening door number 2 to show no prize is there.

Before this event the odds of survival for each prisoner were 1/3, 1/3, 1/3.

The odds that the guard would choose prisoner B as the non-surviving one (dead that is) in case prisoner A/B/C is the surviving one are: 1/2, 0, 1.

That is if A was pardoned then the guard can chose either of B or C so the odds of pointing out B are 1/2. The odds of pointing out B as dead when he is pardoned are 0 and the odds of pointing out B as dead when C is pardoned are 1 (because he cannot indicate A as dead because the guard is not allowed to tell A about his own fate). Hence the final odds for each prisoner must add up to 1 so through proportionality they are 1/3, 0, 2/3.

So prisoner A didn't find out anything new about his chance of being the pardoned one.

Lol_Lolovici··on Scientists create first working electronic quantum processor
Looking good so far. Thanks.
Lol_Lolovici··on Scientists create first working electronic quantum processor
Does anyone have some good scientific links for what a quantum processor is? I am a bit familiar with quantum physics so the more in-depth the better.

All the stuff I read so far contains some magical descriptions by journalists who don't exactly know what they are talking about.

Lol_Lolovici··on The Revolution Will Be Twittered
I don't understand what I got backwards. I was just pointing out that this is a very similar situation to that one (revolution, twitter, elections) and it has the same media buzz but with the added bonus that it involves a Muslim country hence the US media enjoys it more. Your points about that situation are valid of course but that was not what I was saying.

It's funny you should correct the way I wrote the country name. I know the proper name but I chose to write it like most English users would know it.

Lol_Lolovici··on The Revolution Will Be Twittered
It's interesting that something that already happened at least once is suddenly much more interesting because it involves the Islamic world. This was done before in Moldavia (http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/04/inside-moldovas/) but it was not that interesting for the media then because it wasn't Muslims and nobody wanted to anger Russia at that moment.
Lol_Lolovici··on Why Mono doesn't suck
Actually Mono is the short form for the correct name of the disease, not a slang term:
