LogicX··on Space Economy Institute
I didn't feel blown away reading the page...

I'm a future astronaut with Virgin Galactic and have been learning a lot about the industry through their future astronaut events, and everyone you meet through that, their companies, etc.

They have a NXTGen astronaut program: https://www.virgingalactic.com/nxtgen-sign-up Where I imagine you'd learn a lot!

LogicX··on People with CarPlay are mostly just listening to AM/FM radio
I'm concerned about the quality of an article written by someone admitting they don't know how to listen to FM in their car.
LogicX··on US sues eBay for allowing sale of emissions defeat devices
From TFA: “The DOJ’s suit comes after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that emissions defeat devices would no longer be a top priority for the agency.”

So literally the EPA did the exact opposite of your complaint. Or you meant to say DOJ.

Also “open” — an internal board, which Reuters was shown. So… not open.
LogicX··on Richard Feynman on looking at the world from another point of view (1973)
Oddly enough there was a different recent submission to HN a few below this for me... here it is: https://youtubetranscript.com/?v=GNhlNSLQAFE&t=1
LogicX··on Reddit ‘antiwork’ forum booms as millions of Americans quit jobs
And I’ve read numerous threads where people don’t agree with that. I think most are more concerned about their shitty situation no longer being tolerated, but most still believe they should work for someone.
LogicX··on Buying an ebike
Most: no.

I have this: https://lunacycle.com/sur-ron-x-bike-black-edition/

The Sur Ron has a 7000W motor. I weigh 260lbs. It climbs hills. At 30-40mph and is awesome!

LogicX··on Buying an ebike
Yes. And the article explicitly states “over 60” ;)
LogicX··on Europe's all-time heat record set in Sicily at nearly 120 degrees
0? To 100?
LogicX··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
Nice article.

My only technical nit would be the statement “if there was an MX record”.

Many systems will fall back to an A record to attempt delivery in absence of a MX record.

LogicX··on There have been 7M-13M excess deaths worldwide during the pandemic
I’ve asked myself this question. I have no hard data to back this up, but wonder If it’s related to outside time and vitamin D absorption, which seems to have an affect on covid. Ex: did NYC have a tougher time than Florida as a result of this, and even with all the protocols in NYC, they could do only as well as Florida with no rules.
LogicX··on Apple brass discussed disclosing 128M iPhone hack, then decided not to
Not according to the article: “For developers to have run the counterfeit version, they would have had to click through a warning delivered by Gatekeeper, the macOS security feature that requires apps to be digitally signed by a known developer.”

Worked just fine. Developers circumvented it. Should’ve been the red flag.

LogicX··on Ask HN: Considering colocated hosting over cloud, what should I know?
I agree with the other posters... Start with bare metal dedicated.

Checkout Web Hosting Talk: https://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36

For some deals, pick something with low latency to you... and start there.

I’ve rented hundreds of servers over the years and only done colo a handful of times. A fine experience to have, but learning you need a KVM/IPMI through a dedicated server to start, and experiencing the ropes of hardware failures is going to be easier with a dedicated.

LogicX··on AWS EC2 Having Issues
I see what you did there...
LogicX··on Z3 – ZFS to S3 Backup/Restore Tool
Sounds like https://www.delimiter.com/slot-hosting/ which I’ve used in the past. Same cost per drive, but 4x the bandwidth included.
LogicX··on Citus 10 brings columnar compression to Postgres
Came here to say this - I was looking to see how compression compared to timescale’s stated 91% compression.

LogicX··on Ask HN: Best cloud infra provider for a startup to start small and scale a bit?
Rent a VPS.

Then rent a dedicated server when you outgrow it.

Whatever you design will be platform agnostic. You’ll be able to decide for yourself when you get big enough what’s the right path for hosting. You won’t be locked in to any particular platform.

Install something like dokku. Use Docker containers.

My startup scaled to $2M ARR on a single dedicated server for our core infrastructure. (Yes, that’s a bit extreme)

Now we have over 30 dedicated servers servicing our core infra, many of which live in a colo rack in Dallas.

Everyone is all about ‘the cloud’ - however IMHO it’s overly complicated and a distraction to start, and overly expensive as you scale. (AWS would be 16x more expensive for us than our colo setup)

Vultr, DigitalOcean, Linode... are all fine for getting started. Many even have programs where startups can get free credits: https://www.digitalocean.com/hatch/

When you grow checkout some Dedicated Hosting providers like Hivelocity, or checkout webhostingtalk’a dedicated offers forum.

Put cloudflare infront of your service for some protection and lots of options/flexibility. Backup offsite. S3 is fine to start. Can get expensive. Look to back blaze B2, or c14 from scaleway.

Source: 20 years of hosting, many startups.

LogicX··on RIP Flynn.io
Going to take you up on this offer. We've been running Dokku in production for years; and have a few quirks which have resulted in us evaluating moving to k8s.
LogicX··on How often should I rotate my SSH keys?
I don’t get it. Use ssh keys with a passphrase? Then stolen keys are useless?
LogicX··on Has Amazon Ruined the Name Alexa?
That no-talent assclown!
LogicX··on Why updating DNS is slow
Not too bad! Covers the major things most forget when trying to understand this question.
LogicX··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
Agreed. I did this in 2012 - Fort Lauderdale to Ocean City, MD. Landed in Myrtle Beach, SC for 7 years.
LogicX··on Intel CEO Bob Swan to step down, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger to replace him
Pat went to my high school and computer science program. It’s in a small rural, Pennsylvania farming town - pop 2000. Somehow we got an amazing math teacher turned CompSci and he turned out world class students - we always ranked high enough each year to compete internationally in ACSL.

A few years back when the teacher retired, we all gathered together to thank him, including Pat! World-class guy, and makes us proud! So great to share a story with students, who come from nothing, how you can leave our hometown and eventually be the CEO of Intel.

Wishing Pat the best of luck in his new role!

LogicX··on Once the disease of gluttonous aristocrats, gout is now tormenting the masses
I hadn’t heard of cranberry - but cherry juice is claimed to help. Never did much for me (diagnosed with Gout a few years ago)
LogicX··on Netlify for the frontend, Micro for the backend
Biggest thing for me is netlify’s distributed nature. I don’t see anything about m3o being in multiple data centers the way fly.io is. For me, that better aligns with an appropriate backend for Netlify. (Or cloudflare workers)
LogicX··on Zoom Deleted Events Discussing Zoom “Censorship”
The IPs are announced by oracle: https://bgp.he.net/ip/193.122.212.125

Reverse DNS for the IP is handled by oracle cloud.

LogicX··on How to properly manage SSH keys for server access
This. The author presents a different solution which is equally not scalable without automation and suggests you automate his new layer instead of just using ansible to automate handling of ssh keys.
LogicX··on Ask HN: How do I stop companies from up-leveling me? Am I underselling myself?
You’re technical and have self-awareness of failings?

I’d hire you to be a manager. I wouldn’t be worried you can’t learn and grow.
