LoSboccacc··on Internet sleuths take down the SSC Tuatara's 316-MPH speed record

LoSboccacc··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
well, duh, we're in a thread about dependency to google services, no need to be pedantic, the message is abundantly clear.
LoSboccacc··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
what happens tho to all your google authenticator linked stuff?
LoSboccacc··on How Do We Prevent War in Space?

LoSboccacc··on If Not SPAs, What?
"swing tooling" thank you, don't misrepresent my argument.
LoSboccacc··on The Laptev Sea hasn't frozen
> But if your takeaway from that is that scientists are overconfident and wrong

my takeaway is that every years hundred models are given birth, every year later the model fitting the data best survive, and two year later when that last model prediction fail, a new model from the previous that that predicted the change better replaces it, in a never ending cycle of bullshit.

the models go both way: without a predictive model that can hold water, how do you know which parameter to tune to resolve the climate crisis?

LoSboccacc··on The Laptev Sea hasn't frozen
from 1970 to 2050±20? no. from 2013 to 2016±3? I absolutely expect it to be within the given error range
LoSboccacc··on It’s dangerous to think humans have a destiny outside Earth
you're moving the goalpost from self sufficient to 100 millions humans, and the two are very lightly correlated.

beside, earth manufacturing is biased toward efficiency and low cost, with the driver of capital gain, not sustainability, you don't actually need lcd if crt are good enough and could be manufactured in situ.

sure it won't make for a good nor a pleasant standard of living, but then again, that's moving the goalpost.

LoSboccacc··on If Not SPAs, What?
well we're talking about the tooling, but point taken, swing wasn't perfect (totally grid bag 2007 short https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuLaxbFKAcc )

but it's not like it was that worse than flex bugs ( https://codepen.io/sandrosc/pen/YWQAQO still does render differently in chrome than firefox - which one is wrong is immaterial)

LoSboccacc··on Amazon destroys $1.5m of sellers inventory – now homeless
https://corrierefiorentino.corriere.it/firenze/notizie/crona...

> Mediante alcune aziende dell’hinterland fiorentino, pratese e dell’empolese - le stesse che producono quelle che poi diventano le vere borse firmate - il gruppo provvedeva a tutte le fasi produttive e commerciali

your turn.

LoSboccacc··on Amazon destroys $1.5m of sellers inventory – now homeless
often fakes (in fashion at least) are just overquota items produced from the same sweatshop that produce the legit items, which the sweatshops sell on the side to earn that dollar more per month.

brands thus moved to control counterfeit pursuing anything that isn't coming off their sales chain end to end, even if the fake is virtually identical to the legit product.

LoSboccacc··on Amazon destroys $1.5m of sellers inventory – now homeless
we had a similar experience moving item off smaller platform. it's a constant barrage of counterfeit claims, even if we sold 1 (one) item, we racked up 10 complaints in a month.

it's a very profitable model to keep small competitors operations out of the system, so of course it's abused to hell and back.

LoSboccacc··on Show HN: Lucia – 3kB Vue Alternative
> By scattering selectors all over the place the HTML template and the JavaScript code is tightly coupled so when you change one place you need to manually change the other place as well

eh, it's not like if you change something in the vue state store you don't have to modify the template as well

LoSboccacc··on The virtual device farm for rendering websites on multiple devices
> you no longer need random time.sleep()

you never needed that, selenium always had multiple method available to wait for page loads or to wait for specific div to become available in the dom or visible in the viewport.

anyway, I don't understand the usefulness of a mobile web render into a browser: a tall, narrow frame is no substitute of a mobile device. for one the rendering engine is not the same, secondly you don't get touch events generated for it, thirdly hover and pixel density media queries straight up won't work

LoSboccacc··on Forklift truck drivers who never leave their desks
because the net would have to control the actuators anyway, but it's not a given that an actuator can move controls as fast as an human would be able to. putting the human in control of the actuators instead of sensors on controls solves that issue.
LoSboccacc··on Forklift truck drivers who never leave their desks
I think there's so much more to it. once they're remotely operated is quite easier to install an ai in the control loop.

it will first be training only. it will then start taking off the less risky task, like driving the lift to parking space after being used. Human will be gradually moved into facilitator jobs, taking over the difficult situation, and ultimately supervision only

however I am left wondering why, in the midst of the autonomously driven vehicles hype, people are focusing on the messy, unpredictable road environments instead of working on these kind of in-between situations that are harder than an automated warehouse but simpler than the public world.

LoSboccacc··on How Discord Won
something that is not underlined enough is that you're allowed to purchase Nitro for someone else channel you enjoy, via gifts.

that removes a lot of friction, compared to, say, splitting a teamserver costs or putting a paypal donation button.

LoSboccacc··on The Problem of Free Speech in an Age of Disinformation
the definition of fraud follows the laws, not logic. laws aren't uniform and crime equipotent, because they model a trade-off between societal, communal and individual damage, plus a great deal of unfairness from certain topic being propped up by politicians or special interests groups
LoSboccacc··on Microsoft just force restarted my Windows PC again to install more unwanted apps
how does this fud get a pass on hacker news?

https://i.imgur.com/vncSAEG.png

you can finely control restart policies.

LoSboccacc··on How to waste your career, one comfortable year at a time
if they're invested. investing takes time, and if your job/career is on a natural rising curve, sinking time in the job to advance faster will gain greater returns, especially if you and the job market can stay in the "switch every two years for 15% pay increase" zone, very hard to beat that unless one is consistently very lucky all the time with investment, at which point it's better to fire yourself and start investing other people money as a job anyway.
LoSboccacc··on Microsoft just force restarted my Windows PC again to install more unwanted apps
look, I don't condone Microsoft for doing this to home users, but all these people should just stop using window home for work if they value their tool ownership, instead of cheapening out.

you get what you pay for, I guess.

LoSboccacc··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
> People cannot combine software with incompatible licenses.

well yeah, that the point, you either demand a nod, or suck it up and stop asking things that weren't in the license

LoSboccacc··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
no? why would they? they are complying with everything dude asked for and mind reading is not in mandatory training as of yet.

if you want a nod if used as a part of a software, just add it!

LoSboccacc··on I switched to Linux after using Windows for 10 years
yeah the first period after switching to Linux is almost always ok-ish, sometimes even pleasant, depending on one's specific use case.

then you live trough your first pulse audio upgrade. or maybe you have to bring a laptop in two wireless location with slightly different network configs. or it's just a distro upgrade where the default filesystem changed and they dropped the older fs kernel module. or you have a second monitor, or a multitouch pad, and at every update there's a chance for some package change breaking their config.

LoSboccacc··on Monitoring a high risk conjunction between two large defunct objects in LEO
prob they can measure speed at a higher accuracy than one mm/s, also orbit have a relatively low inclination difference and objects have a size, so that the impact area is not a point but a larger ellipses of varying overlap between bodies.
LoSboccacc··on Monitoring a high risk conjunction between two large defunct objects in LEO
a 0.001% uncertainty in speed is about 7km uncertainty in position after a day
LoSboccacc··on What Color Is This? Part 2
resizing is quite disruptive to patterns

we got good results for that specific failure mode with random sampling.

how much samples to take require some tuning, but you can use the image data itself to facilitate the tuning part by exiting the random sampling when the deviation of sampled pixels is below a factor proportional to samples/totals

LoSboccacc··on Google sues me for using the word “droid” in my company name Orpheusdroid
it's as if you only read one point out of three and I'm out of charitable interpretations thus unable to further the discussion.
LoSboccacc··on Google sues me for using the word “droid” in my company name Orpheusdroid
ugh

1) trademark don't cover just exact matches

2) trademarks are in their own classes, you can't litigate across classes

3) common words are perfectly fine as trademarks, as long as commonly associated with a product
