Llamamoe··on Initial DIY cleanroom experimentation
Agreed. It was literally the wake up call for the fact that air quality standards are as important as soap and handwashinhg are, and yet... nothing happened.

And so the question of what effects getting rid of several-yearly respiratory infections would have on our health and the development of children remains open.

Llamamoe··on Initial DIY cleanroom experimentation
You could probably improvise something cheaper using the same filter arrangement, though now that you have it, sounds like the best thing to do might be just including an extra sacrificial initial filter to increase the lifespan of the proper ones.
Llamamoe··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
Better "understanding of technology", probably not - early computing and internet required a lot more technical insight, and younger generations are notoriously tech illiterate.

Insight into how it effects society? Very possibly, at the least it's a different, more native perspective. Whether it is also broader or more correct, it's hard to say.

Llamamoe··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Much if fhe inspections and standards aren't "necessary for safety" but the direct product of paranoia and lobbying. Nuclear is brutally overregulated, far, far beyond what's necessary to ensure safety, and that's where most costs come from.
Llamamoe··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
Encryption backdoors by definition mean everybody who wants it gets hands on your data. You can't make backdoors only the "good guys" can access.

And while, sure, adtech corpos maybe won't due to the bad PR, what about the Kremlin, criminal organizations, or your insane abusive ex?

Llamamoe··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
This might have been plausible if this study came out of nowhere but there have been placebo controlled studies inducing/reversing autism-like symptoms in mice with fecal transplants and studies linking individual git microbiome metabolites to symptom severity in both animal models and humans.

Yeah the research is still preliminary but it's still pretty strong evidence that it's a research direction worth exploring.

Llamamoe··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
TLDR of the article is that it's yet another person confusing "heritable" with "genetic". Genes aren't the only thing we inherit from out parents - and in fact there's strong preliminary evidence that the gut microbiome plays a major role in autism.
Llamamoe··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
Heritable != genetic.

There are very strong reasons to suspect that gut microbiome at least plays a major role in at least a large portion of autism cases, complete with studies where we've been able to induce/reverse a subset of autism symptoms in mice, and even humans, as well as linking individual gut microbe metabolites to them. And ~80% of autistic people have gut problems.

There's no question in my mind that at least some of the propensity to develop autism is genetic, but calling the whole of it genetic feels ridiculous in the face of preliminary evidence to the contrary consistent with the massive increase in diagnosis rates beyond what can be explained by changing criteria.

Llamamoe··on Pivot to AI safety, I beg you
Is a misaligned AI worse than a super - capable AI aligned with corporate interest? Because I can't really tell anymore.
Llamamoe··on UN to vote on adopting new world map that shows true size of all countries
You can smoothly interpolate between different projections, and the scale differences are large enough that it should be gradual enough not to notice much. Either way, globe view is always superior.
Llamamoe··on DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Vision-Exp
I believe that multimodal training increases the robustness of latent representations regardless of which modality is being processed.
Llamamoe··on Mathematicians will probably become obsolete before anyone else [pdf]
In the same sense as pharmacology is a branch of physics. Technically, yes. Realistically the overlap is small and you don't need one for the other most of the time.
Llamamoe··on People Who Will Thrive in the AI Age
So like always, the people who get shafted the hardest are the chronically ill, the fatigued, the ADHD, or even the depressed.

Executive function has always been the beginning and the end of efficacy and capability.

Llamamoe··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
Bread, pasta, potatoes, white rice, whatever are almost all starch. When cooked their glycemic index is all similarly high.

And rice is unusually poor in vitamins and minerals. Even brown rice is nowhere near as good a fiber source as vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds.

If you want an actually excellent staple crop, buckwheat is about the only truly outstanding one.

Llamamoe··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
This has nothing to do with plant and everything to do with rampant prevalence of gut dysbiosis and harmful gut bacteria feeding on otherwise healthy fibers and carbs, as well as processed carbohydrate and sugar overconsumption plus insulin resistance driven by sedentary lifestyles, inflammation, etc.

Ketogenic diet is a band aid to both, not a solution, and plants are not the cause of either problem, either.

Llamamoe··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
All the more so since rice is relatively poor in nutrients.
Llamamoe··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
> Then again, farm plants are a further 18%.

Yeah, but they also provide 80% of the world's calories to animals' 20%

Llamamoe··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Oh, I'm sure a lot of those people have been convinced to back these laws out of sincere desire to protect children.

The problem is that those laws are NOT designed to protect children, and the people who convince politicians and the public to support them are NOT doing so out of genuine concern to protect children.

The real, underlying reason why they are being pushed for so hard is to destroy privacy and control people which is going to make everyone but the elite less safe, children included.

Especially if and when we get another Nazi Germany type regime and realize that - oh shit, they have 24/7 overview of where every single person in the world is, what they do, what they think, what their worldviews and identities are.

It's impossible for any of this to end well.

Llamamoe··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
The question I would really like the "people" pushing so hard for surveillance to ask themselves is:

How would the Nazi Germany and Hitler gone if they had this system in place, telling them who and where every single Jewish, gay, gypsy, disabled, or just ideologically opposed to them person was, 24/7?

What about other insane rulers? What do you think they would - or rather, will - do with these systems?

Llamamoe··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
Sleep problems due to undiagnosed or subtle Sleep Disordered Breathing, or other fatigue-causing conditions not quite bad enough to either be disabling or diagnosed are extremely common.

It's easy to be tempted to blame it on people getting addicted to caffeine or whatever but the reality is that most people do those things to self medicate a real issue they have no better recourse against.

Llamamoe··on Third Drone Shot Down in Three Days in Romanian Territory
Are there enough nations on Russia's side to call them a bloc? It seems like almost everyone is supporting Ukraine.
Llamamoe··on More testosterone won't make a better soldier or a tougher man
I strongly suspect that most of the issues correlated with low testosterone are co-symptoms rather than caused by it. From my research, it doesn't seem like going much above the lower end of the T range carries much additional benefit, other than muscle mass, and testosterone replacement in people with merely low testosterone doesn't do as much good as people think it does.
Llamamoe··on More testosterone won't make a better soldier or a tougher man
For physiological level replacement, not a lot. But also, you don't get a whole lot of additional benefit for going over the lower end of the reference range, and people usually don't fall below that.
Llamamoe··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
Exactly. This is a slap on the wrist. They need to either be banned from profiting from the egregious piracy, meaning charging money for anything trained on pirated works, or at least be forced to pay major royalties.
Llamamoe··on Meta pauses AI training program tracking employee keystrokes after internal leak
Does anyone, ever, have any faith in the integrity or competence of executives, these days? Because it seems to me that most people would outright prefer them to burn but are powerless against the increasing abuses and betrayals of employees.
Llamamoe··on The discovery that changed how scientists think about memory
People love to bring this up, but while yes, all cells have some form of memory mechanism or another, with quite the number of nerves outside the brain, we are still a cognitively top-eown organism and quite unlike simpler organisms where the line is blurry.

In machine learning terms, we've basically got a layer or two of neurons responsible for physical memory stored outside the brain, sure. But it's out of dozens if not hundreds total.

Llamamoe··on ReactOS (FOSS "Windows") achieves 3D-accelerated Half-Life on real hardware
You can configure rofimoji to work really well and off a keyboard shortcut into any application.
Llamamoe··on Dangerous hormone-disrupting chemicals found in US breast milk samples
Those countries tend to have much less cultural awareness/acceptance and much tougher lives where other priorities take precedence.
Llamamoe··on GPT-2: Too Dangerous To Release (2019)
The death toll of especially the early variants was huge, and it created the largest spike in disability(vis fatigue etc) and cardiovascular disease in recent history.

It WSS definitely not nothing.

Llamamoe··on The Causes of Long Covid
I'm glad that this was the case for you, but presenting it as an universal truth is extremely cruel and harmful to people for whom it is not, and you should be really careful with phrasing. Statements like these is why people's symptoms are not being taken seriously.
