LittlePeter··on BadEconomics: Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet
> The awesome thing about markets is that they separate the talkers from the doers, so go write another editorial if it makes you feel better. A bunch of kids in their 20's have made more money than this author will make in his whole life because they called it better than this "expert"

You can be an expert and still be poor. Your argument seems to imply if the author was an expert he would be filthy rich.

I am an expert on roulette. I know it is a losing proposition and I can give you the expected value of your bets. I choose not to play because of negative expected value. Yet there are kids in their 20's that have made fortune with roulette.

It does not. Several people claimed Bitcoin would be in the $100K-$1,000K range by now.

LittlePeter··on I tried out-training my diet for 18 months
It does not contradict, no. I can lose weight eating moderately but you may not. You may need to eat bordering on starvation to lose weight, which in my book is not "moderate".

Basically, my point is, some people have to suffer more to lose weight. But all people will lose weight regardless if they stop eating, because physics.

LittlePeter··on Java is better than C++ for high speed trading systems
What else can "instance" mean, other than an instance of a virtual server? Granted may not be on AWS, but still is virtual which is a latency killer.
LittlePeter··on I tried out-training my diet for 18 months
> Some people just have conditions where they can NOT lose weight.

Of course the laws of thermodynamics say that is impossible. You will lose weight if you don't eat. You may not lose weight if you eat moderately, while another person will.

LittlePeter··on Europe’s Startup Unicorns
I extracted the inner text inside a <p class="foo"></p> using Python & BeautifulSoup, print to stdout, then cut, sort, uniq, and sort again.

It looks like the counts from this voodoo are incorrect: they are all twice as much. However, proportions are still correct.

LittlePeter··on Europe’s Startup Unicorns
Counts by country:

     54 United Kingdom
     18 Germany
     14 France
      8 Netherlands
      6 Switzerland
      4 Sweden
      4 Spain
      2 Romania
      2 Norway
      2 Lithuania
      2 Finland
      2 Estonia
      2 Cyprus
      2 Belgium
United Kingdom is definitely over-represented. Bad sampling by Sifted? Or is the climate in UK genuinely more favorable to start-ups?

> can't escape the compulsion of not even being wrong.

What does this phrase mean? Is the economist not wrong? Why is that then unfortunate?

LittlePeter··on Increase in Bitcoin Addresses as More People Join the BTC Price Surge
The "economic uncertainty" sounds like something everyone would agree on. "Yes we are in uncertain times right now". Then again, at any point in time, there would be agreement that economy is in uncertain times. It is a meaningless argument because in my opinion it is always true.

Here is a Google Trend for "economic uncertainty", where nothing seems to have changed much except maybe little blip during Spring of 2020: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=economic...

Edit, found a link which actually does show heightened economic uncertainty: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/USEPUINDXD perhaps contradicting myself.

LittlePeter··on Increase in Bitcoin Addresses as More People Join the BTC Price Surge
Through what mechanism would bots drive up the price? Are you claiming there are simplistic momentum bots out there with seemingly more cash than other bots that just buy up bitcoin causing it to rise, which causes them to buy more of it, ad nauseam?

For pump and dump schemes, aren't we past that stage for Bitcoin at least? Isn't Bitcoin too big and too "mainstream" to be pumped in some Telegraph channel? Maybe you can clarify what pump-and-dump strategy you think is being used here?

LittlePeter··on Boeing 737 Max Is Cleared by FAA to Resume Flights

> The biggest mistake new investors make is sell when they see a red negative number.

On the other hand, often used reason for bad trading performance is sticking to the losers and not riding the winners. So who is right? Or you think this trading maxim does not apply to the "investing" that you refer to?

I do not agree. From personal experience, I'll be wasting hours some days trying to fall asleep.

If anything, wake up at the same hour every day and go to bed when tired.

LittlePeter··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
You're right. My expectations we wrong. I expected short concise news article, but this seems to be a long-form article. My bad.
LittlePeter··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
Even from the context, it was not clear to me what DDT was. I suspected it was some chemical. I would have appreciated a sentence or two explaining why it is bad and what it does.

What IBM is would typically be clear from the context: "IBM reported record loss in 2nd quarter of 2020".

LittlePeter··on L.A.'s coast was once a DDT dumping ground, but no one could see it until now
I was waiting for the DDT acronym to be explained, but no. IMHO no matter how obvious an acronym may be, it should be explained, something like "DDT (D... D... T...) is highly dangerous".

Apparently: "Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT, is a colorless, tasteless, and almost odorless crystalline chemical compound, an organochlorine."

edit: added explanation
