I think you're missing the point that gsl::index, unlike size_t, is signed.

I like the idea behind your compression analogy, but it doesn't quite work. In particular, you assume the solution when saying that the set of all programs is incompressible. Indeed, there are programs which operate on the set of all programs, e.g. trivially "is the first bit of the program a 1".

I think you're correctly proving that non-computable functions exist (though the proof needs to mention countable vs uncountable infinities I think, based on a power set over the input/output set), but you still need some sort of self referential statement to prove the halting problem.

Leszek··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
What is the value of anything, really? The value of a metal brick, or a shiny stone, far exceeds any practical utility of the physical object itself. Even the value of a "real" currency is based, in broad strokes, on what you can exchange it for.

I really love the translation "hack". The 2D plane is mapped onto the z=1 plane, and then we apply an x-y shear in 3D space. This keeps the 3D origin at the origin, but shifts around the z=1 plane without distorting it, so that when we project back to 2D it looks like a translation.

Though spec bugs go the opposite way: if you discover an issue in the spec, then it is very difficult to change it because someone somewhere may have been - at the time correctly - relying on that behaviour.
Leszek··on Racing for Realism
You would if it were in an article about computer generated imagery.
Leszek··on The Dying Art of Courtroom Illustration
Sure, but surely sketches can be just as twisted and misused (e.g. drawing a defendant with a menacing snarl), and even more so given that there's no source of real truth.
Leszek··on The Dying Art of Courtroom Illustration
Well indeed, I suppose I should have also said "aside from photography being disallowed". Perhaps to phrase another way, why could anyone be against the reintroduction of photography into courtrooms?
Leszek··on The Dying Art of Courtroom Illustration
I there any reason to prefer these illustrations over photos, other than "charm"? Something like not recording things that weren't the centre of attention?
Leszek··on Concrete-free washing machines are lighter to transport, just as good in a spin
I imagine the difficulty here is not in coming up with the idea of using a water tank, but rather in designing the shape and material of a container that is sufficiently strong to survive the forces acting upon it.

You and I have different definitions of "low dose".

That's kind of amazing, and kind of terrifying.

Leszek··on Avegant “Light Field” Display
Your daughter will be glad to hear that she's in good company, in noticing the "Vergence-Accommodation conflict"[1] that is unavoidable on two-view stereoscopic displays. You're correct that light field optics don't have this issue -- other options are volumetric displays and "super multi-view" displays (which are, to a certain interpretation, a type of lightfield display).

Leszek··on Pebble's next step
No, I know that I'll be getting a refund, I just wonder why the kickstarter money wasn't enough to fulfill the kickstarter rewards.
Leszek··on Pebble's next step
FitBit bought them for the equivalent of pennies because they were, it seems, deep in debt.
Leszek··on Pebble's next step
Very disappointing for this backer that the Time 2 will never come out. It makes you wonder where the kickstarter money went.

Leszek··on London Is Still Paying Rent to the Queen on a Property Leased in 1211
From a page linked within the original article:

> The six horseshoes and the sixty-one nails themselves probably date from the 1360's. After being rendered to the Queen's Remembrancer, they are preserved in his Office and, with the permission of the Crown, they are loaned to the City Corporation to be rendered again the following year.

> Lindtner compares the culture of Shenzhen’s manufacturing ecosystem to the open-source movement among software developers.

This is actually an interesting comparison. There are plenty of open-source "clones" or (more kindly) alternatives to closed-source software, and this is seen as a good thing. What's the real difference between this and these sorts of clean-room hardware clones?

When I saw the title, I assumed this was satirical. By the time I reached the end, I became entirely uncertain. Is this a genuine post that happens to be a bit amusingly self-aware, or full-blown Poe's law satire?
Leszek··on The Problems with Food and Exercise Studies
Crack addicts also get withdrawal symptoms, it's not necessarily a sign of being in a good situation. I'm glad for you that you're in a position where your urges steer you in a healthy direction, but that doesn't make "listen to your body" always good advice.
Leszek··on The Problems with Food and Exercise Studies
> Listen to your body.

I hate this advice. When I'm exercising, my body is telling me that I'm tired and that I should give up. When I'm eating chocolate, my body is telling me that it's delicious and I should have more. Sure, there are things that you probably should listen to your body about, but there are just as many that you should ignore and overcome.
