LesZedCB··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
it's called cupping and we do it regularly. it's extremely easy to detect differences between coffees when tasting side by side. I roast my own at home, doing two batches of different coffees at a time, and try to compare them with each other as well as my previous batches. using grocery store coffee as a baseline is actually recommended as well.

I highly recommend doing a cupping sometime, it's great for learning what you like, you may discover something.

LesZedCB··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
freezer yes, fridge idk.
LesZedCB··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
there are even more niche products, literally called bean counters which dose whole beans to a certain weight. believe it or not they are well over $100. the deep end of coffee is both insane and expensive
LesZedCB··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
i think this was demonstrated in that mark rober promo video[1] where he asked why the paper airplane stalled by blatantly leading the witness.

"do you believe that a pocket of hot air would lead to lower air pressure causing my plane to stall?"

he could barely even phrase the question correctly because it was so awkward. just embarrassing.

LesZedCB··on Swedish court rules against Tesla in dispute with postal service over deliveries
they aren't extralegal. the strike actions are protected by law. they are exercising their legal right every bit as much as tesla is by suing (and losing).

i too was excited and duped about the real-time implications. though i'm not surprised at all to find out it's false.

mea cupla i should have looked at the bottom of the description box on youtube where it probably says "this demonstration is based on an actual interaction with an LLM"

LesZedCB··on Data-Oriented Design (2018)
Yehonathan Sharvit wrote a post describing the difference between Data-Oriented Programming, Data-Oriented Design, and Data-Driven Design here. it's a 2 minute read or 15 second skim, very brief.

https://blog.klipse.tech/visualization/2021/02/16/data-relat...

it includes a nice summary of all of the above which may help when reading the OP.

LesZedCB··on Three American climbers solve the 'last great problem in the Himalayas'
well the American alpine club has an average income that's in the six figures iirc. however when there's an annual fee of $100 or so, it's a bit of selection bias.

however one of their perks is the "Live your dream" grant where they fund amateur climbers to go on their dream trip once a year. it's application based but I've known people who've gone to the Karakorum on it.

LesZedCB··on Three American climbers solve the 'last great problem in the Himalayas'
finger dexterity is important for technical climbing so thick gloves are a trade off. additionally, when hanging on to technical ice tools, your finger tip is doing a lot of work, so not a lot of circulation to keep the tissue healthy.
LesZedCB··on Three American climbers solve the 'last great problem in the Himalayas'
holy fucking shit that hero photo of the climber on the verglas is totally nuts! i've done a fair bit of ice climbing myself, but easy, fat waterfall stuff. leading a pitch like that at altitude with that kind of exposure makes my stomach absolutely drop. alpinists are totally crazy! <3

LesZedCB··on Freetar – an alternative front end for ultimate-guitar.com
i didn't realize musescore opened guitar pro 7/8 files (which is what sheet happens publishes)! sadly tux guitar support stopped at gp5. I will definitely be checking out musescore, thanks for the rec!
LesZedCB··on Freetar – an alternative front end for ultimate-guitar.com
hint, check out the history/revisions button at the top right on songsterr

also, i just learned elsewhere on the thread that musescore is FOSS and loads all formats of guitar pro files!

LesZedCB··on Freetar – an alternative front end for ultimate-guitar.com
woah, me too! stopped during college and I decided to take guitar serious this time and get some lessons which i started in July. it's been a huge improvement and super fun.

check out Plini and Intervals, some of my favorites in the same vein as Satriani.

also, I've found guitar pro to really be worth it. Sheet Happens publishes official tabs, and all their PDF tab books come with guitar pro files as well and theyre pretty good quality. Sheet Happens has a permanent guitar pro discount code too.

LesZedCB··on Library Genesis in Numbers: Mapping the Underground Flow of Knowledge (2018) [pdf]
their de-facto monopoly status on basically all things books and increasingly on publishing, and of course their absolutely inane DRM.

libby is amazing, people are completely sleeping on it if you're not using it. free e-books!

LesZedCB··on Library Genesis in Numbers: Mapping the Underground Flow of Knowledge (2018) [pdf]
my friend in college bought texts books before the first semester when their parents took them to the book store. then a classmate showed them libgen and didn't buy any more text books except the one weird custom textbook by some professor.

i guess they buy all their books now that they have a job, but also with generous use of used book stores and physical libraries.

oh and dont buy though amazon, especially kindle.
