LeoTinnitus··on The problem with being a top performer (2017)
In my experience, sometimes you have to lie because being sometimes situations arise where being honest hurts my immediate credibility which ultimately can hurt our relationship.

Lying to me is a tool that has to be used effectively. It's a fine line where if you do it too little, people think of you as a tool or you hurt yourself. If you do it a lot, nobody trusts you. It's a socially something that should be expected, but something for you to consider to yourself.

LeoTinnitus··on The problem with being a top performer (2017)
I've experienced this first hand when I was a know nothing try hard at a office job that didn't matter.

I learned fast to document.EVERYTHING!

Not that management can always have your back, but they most certainly will turn a blind eye when someone bitches or complains.

LeoTinnitus··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
I worked in the commercial department of a state financial institution and I loathed SBA loans. They were such a pain. Everybody hated them. Lenders, processors, underwriters...but not the VP!

I mean I get but ffs why? Let the big companies do it. They're just a hassle.

LeoTinnitus··on L.A. Times to Furlough Workers as Ad Revenue ‘Nearly Eliminated’
I've read doctors have just been attributing deaths that look like Covid 19 to exactly that. Even without proper verification.

Also it's only what is reported. There could've been a million people with it in the US but nobody knew...and still don't.

I really agree that we used a tsunami to put out a campfire. There was no reason to close everything basically. If this was like a 25% mortality rate of all those who got it, then yeah, the response would've been appropriate. This is like less than a percent for the majority of the population, a few percent for infants, and a few extra percent for old people. Which already have been at risk just for the sake of being old.

This whole event is just the media at large and social media blindly following as well overexaggerating this "crisis." 2008 was a crisis cause a bubble burst and banks defaulted. This was something made up that really did not need to be this drastic.

LeoTinnitus··on IBM will offer free COBOL training
The government doesn't know that. That's why they're calling it COBALT.

I honestly can't wait until all the old non tech people retire.

LeoTinnitus··on Some landlords say only 25% of retail tenants paid April rent
In terms of commercial renting in the "better" states, this is why the government requires reserves, lending only at a percentage of their income, and take consider economic downturn in underwriting decisions.

I say this in regards to commercial lending though. Residential is no holds barred, anything goes cause banks and mortgage companies house people without any consideration if it's reasonable.

LeoTinnitus··on Ask HN: How can I pick a side project and stick with it?
I've found keeping a spreadsheet of a lot of tasks and how they're related helps. So say you have 3 projects, all with varying types of task. I would make the spreadsheet as follows:

Due Date, Goal Date, Project (or class if student), Assignment, Status.

Due date is definitively when I need to achieve it by (this can be artificial if you want). The goal date can change as my day/week gets hectic so I adjust according to the miscellaneous things that are impossible to account for. Project is like the Grouping of all tasks below it. Then the tasks are the incremental things that need to be done in order for the entire goal to come to fruition. Status tells me if it's completed, partly, or not.

This has helped me because if I'm feeling very committal one day, I can just crush a lot of stuff out. Then I can go "Well looks like I have a week before I have to get that done" so then I can freely budget fun time. It keeps me on track and helps me with balancing pleasure and work.

I've recently started tracking my hours too. It's weird but I think it helps with showing you how much you screw around when you work from home.

LeoTinnitus··on Newly unemployed New Yorkers are being frustrated by 1970s-era technology
> I do not find it reasonable nor cost effective.

How do you convince a manager twice your age that you know more about tech than them and can get it to work in their favor but their so scared of technology that they still force you to do all your work in paper?

That is the workforce in the US right now. It's old people in management that are too scared to learn tech and don't trust younger people who do know how to make things efficient.

LeoTinnitus··on Newly unemployed New Yorkers are being frustrated by 1970s-era technology
Which baffles me even on things like craigslist. How the hell can people not provide pictures? In 2008? Sure I can understand not everybody had a portable camera because why? But 2020? Absolutely not. It's frankly unacceptable that anybody uses that excuse anymore. I always laugh when I see aparatments for rent...but no photos. There is no way I'd want to have a landlord who can't take like 3 photos to even advertise their product. They'll probably even require me to send them an f'ing paper check too.
LeoTinnitus··on Newly unemployed New Yorkers are being frustrated by 1970s-era technology
You can blame the government for that one (not specifically BECAUSE it is the government). They made rules about privacy during an era when tech was still growing. With banking, education, and healthcare, this is a norm. You have to fax because somehow computers are "scary and hard to understand!" so we just still use fax machines.

This is also what happens when you have a government that doesn't act proactively to hire people who are competent and gets people as the lowest bidder or a stable wage that never.changes...

LeoTinnitus··on New Jersey needs COBOL programmers for their unemployment claims system
This is what happens when you have typical business moron-types get elected roles that treat complicated systems as though it's construction work.

It is, but you can't have any joe schmoe off the street coming in and learn how to pour concrete in a day. This is something that requires practice and problem solving skills. And years of it.

LeoTinnitus··on New Jersey needs COBOL programmers for their unemployment claims system

LeoTinnitus··on New Jersey needs COBOL programmers for their unemployment claims system
Everytime I see COBOL, I always think of Newman from Jurassic Park and imagine that is a stereotypical COBOL programmer haha!

If you see any bosses with a weird scarf, back away cause they may spit corona-acid in your face!

LeoTinnitus··on Why Amazon got out of the Apple App Store tax and other developers won’t
To which someone got paid for somewhere along the line to go "hey lets curate this!"
LeoTinnitus··on Why Amazon got out of the Apple App Store tax and other developers won’t
Yeah seriously. Also they've messed with the podcast app so much I can't use it anymore. They only promote those that pay them basically. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find "new" podcasts? It's virtually non-existent on their app. 7 years ago, you could filter by new and you had a larger variety of categories. Now, if they aren't doing an ad ready 10 times per 1 hour episode, it's not at the top page.
LeoTinnitus··on Why Amazon got out of the Apple App Store tax and other developers won’t
I'm 100% with you on every point. I love linux, but while media options exist, they are a royal pain to get to work, or do the things you need them too. Wine is not an option and is just irritating at times. Hardware and driver issues are a pain.
LeoTinnitus··on Why Amazon got out of the Apple App Store tax and other developers won’t
Absolutely. After Steve Jobs died what did we get with Apple? The literal.exact.same.products.every.year...

The newest ipad? Copy of Android. The butterfly keys? DOA and they waited until consumers realized they made dud products at absurd prices. New macbook air? WTF kind of innovation is that? You literally are just reusing the brand name. Also 128gb hard drives as a standard? Still?! That is the biggest joke in the world seeing as the newest macbook has a 4k display. 4k files raw files can be like 50gb's at times! Thats half the drive space!

Apple can get bent at this point. The simple fact that I constantly have to tell it I'm okay with installing a third party app outside of the app store goes to show they do not care what I like about computing. They just want to funnel me through a path to make them money. This is why I'm a staunch advocate for OSS and Linux and always will be, even with their faults.

LeoTinnitus··on What Armenians should know about life in America (2014)
Thats a different issue altogether. I'm saying we don't have a community. I'm not saying those small farming villages were great and all like fiddler on the roof kinds, but much like the amish, it has a standard set of community. People work for eachother, give of themselves, and acknowledge life is a challenge.

In the US, if you don't figure it out on your own and get rich, people just view you as scum and don't care whatsoever. This is why we have psychopaths shooting up concerts, a receding youthful male population, increased suicide rates in general, and people just tuning out of society. There is no defined purpose. You just have to make it. Which is incredibly hard in an economy devised full of choices, every which way preys upon your financial naivety.

The US is a system of the lucky being raised right.

LeoTinnitus··on What Will the World Be Like After Coronavirus? Four Possible Futures
And letting the bourgeoisie make up BS that just benefits the select few at the top is?
LeoTinnitus··on What Will the World Be Like After Coronavirus? Four Possible Futures
Or revolt. Voting does nothing when the government has financial backers.

100,000 people on the governor's doorstep ready to riot will get bipartisan legislation instilled immediately. The civil rights movement was obviously non violent. However, the unrest, economic effects, and disruption FORCED LBJ, a Democrat who really didn't want it to happen, signing that legislation.

Voting in the US is a joke. No minority opinion survives in politics ever. If you go against the grain, you get forced out by other people.

LeoTinnitus··on The highest paid athlete of all time was a Roman Charioteer
I've always gauged it by cost of living expenses for working class people.

It's one reason why I love the road to wiggan pier so much. George Orwell breaks down the cost of living in many areas of Britain for the average person. I think when I calculated it out, even me living in the US at $12/hr with a 700 rent payment and all other expenses, I was still living a comfier life than those people. And they put in some LONG days too.

The most interesting thing he pointed out too was it wasnt the corporate places that had the worst landlords and rooms, it was the small or individual owners. Simply because they couldn't afford to fix anything or give you back your deposit.

LeoTinnitus··on What Armenians should know about life in America (2014)
If you said that to a stereotypical conservative here, they'd call that liberal garbage. The thought is that if you aren't working to an absurd degree, you aren't useful.
LeoTinnitus··on What Armenians should know about life in America (2014)
I think a lot of it stems from American culture simply being centered around money. It's all about how much you make and what you can afford. We all live in our houses 20 miles away from family if not farther and don't value community at all.

It's like the US was devised in a way completely contrary to the way in which we evolved.

LeoTinnitus··on What Armenians should know about life in America (2014)
Where I live, that only exists on actual county highways or new suburbs. When they get to be 10-15 years old (and if it's grown enough to become a town or something), the local area typically makes an ordinance to have sidewalks.
LeoTinnitus··on Why Amazon got out of the Apple App Store tax and other developers won’t
Your comments about you not being as big as Instagram are the reason I really hate apple. I've noticed their push for only the top of the line apps or their own stuff for years and it has completely soured me of them. They only cater to people with money. Apple crushes innovation worse than government regulation right now. All the apps I see on the app store are major corporations. There is hardly anything by indie or single devs anymore. Android it kinda exists but Google takes the "promote the moneymakers more" approach. I just wish apple would stop being a SAAS model company and return to making great hardware again. The simple fact alone that it took them 5 years to remove butterfly keyboards from the market along with 3 years to even acknowledge they were broken and offer free repairs shows they don't care about their users at all.
LeoTinnitus··on [dead]
Lots of obituaries don't say. Although being so young, I'd argue in favor of what you said.
LeoTinnitus··on How I lost control of our bank accounts to a phone scammer
I've done that to credit card companies that I even called. They'd say something like "okay I need your full social security number" and I would just say no. There would be a pause, then they would say "okay I can verify you by your recent transactions."

Like why didn't you start with that! Some companies just don't teach their reps to care about security.

LeoTinnitus··on Bringing 4K and HDR to Anime at Netflix with Sol Levante
I think that's rather ambitious due to the file sizes. Plus most phones barely due 4k still.

But how do you temper managements abuses for lower waged work though?

If only there was some sort of system to enforce laws. Oh wait, that only exists in a perfect world where a government actually cares about your rights...

Honestly I get it on both sides, but I really think the union has to be a jerk. It's annoying to most small independent types or middle management areas, but the people in the union need that type of power to influence the BS corporate hierarchy of exploitation to absurd degrees. It's fine to be exploited, it's annoying when the company will drop you in a heartbeat because some minor issue thats come up. If we had laws that at least made it easier for employees to exert their rights (through agencies that the government didn't short change like they love to do) we would have no need for unions. Culturally it'd be a precedent that management can't be dicks.
