LatticeAnimal··on Web Search API
Ah, they are shutting it down on the agent platform, but the API will still work. That makes sense.
LatticeAnimal··on Web Search API
Google AI's deprecation page [0] says that there is "No shutdown date announced" for gemini-2.5-flash-lite.

(Was your comment a joke? Or did google announce this through different channels?)

LatticeAnimal··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
Protonmail has worked great for me. Never had any issues and I like the inclusion of docs + sheets (even though their apps are ridiculously slow to load)
LatticeAnimal··on 27.5KB language-agnostic WebGPU syntax highlighter
Thanks, that is news to me. I've been hearing about WebGPU for years now so I was surprised that it is still disabled by default.

Yup, figured out how to enable and it works well now.

LatticeAnimal··on Stabilizing Rust's Never Type
Is it obvious to rust developers that "!" would be the never type? I frequently use "never" in typescript. I could imagine using the never type frequently in rust too. I feel like a longer more human-understandable name would've been a good decision here. (feels like more rust jargon that makes the language harder to learn)
LatticeAnimal··on 27.5KB language-agnostic WebGPU syntax highlighter
On linux (tried FF and chromium), the live demo renders all the text as black (no highlighting). On iOS (my phone), this works great. No errors in the console (maybe it fails silently?)

Is this a linux issue / support issue?

LatticeAnimal··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Unserious comment: The big company will spin up swarms of agents whose job is to overwhelm your AI agents with legal requests / correspondence, still with the goal of making you run out of money (but now via AI spend).
LatticeAnimal··on Creepy Crawlies
Cool, so then that invalidates the ASIC problem, right?

My earlier idea was to imagine that each day Anubis picks an entirely different problem-class. Ex: one day it is Sha256, the next it is prime factorization, the next it is twin-prime-finding, the next it is cracking elliptic curves, the next it is some kind of sorting / information theory problem...

All with the goal of adapting constantly so that scrapers have a harder time optimizing for the PoW problem (i.e. with Sha256 ASICs)

LatticeAnimal··on Debian: Retiring from the Project (Vv221)
I am out of the loop. Why are LLMs seen as fascist technology?

(I see arguments against “Open”AI / Anthropic but what about companies like Mistral?)

LatticeAnimal··on Creepy Crawlies
Some of the asymmetry might be regained if anubis had thousands of variations of PoW algorithms, each different enough that they must be solved independently.

I wonder if AI might be able to come up with new PoW algorithms in a nightly CI job so every day is a different puzzle...

LatticeAnimal··on Hyprland 0.55 announced the switch to Lua for its config files
I like the ability to introspect the system. I have a lua LSP, when I edit lua config files, I know all of the fields of the config I am editing, and I know how they behave (without randomly trying things)
LatticeAnimal··on Tell HN: Installing Cursor on iOS irreversibly changes your privacy settings
It is surprising that they went this route instead of the Claude-code route. The cloud agents are significantly more limiting.
LatticeAnimal··on Anthropic acquires Stainless
Have you considered open sourcing the SDK generator as part of the shutdown of stainless services?
LatticeAnimal··on Isseven
JSONQ supports quantum-aware booleans. Is there a reason you’re still using classical JSON parsing in 2026?
LatticeAnimal··on How to turn anything into a router
I’ve been using OpnSense/pfsense [0] for years and would highly recommend it. It has a great automatic update experience, config backups, builtin wireguard tunnels and advanced features like packet filtering options via suricata.

When I am doing network management on my weekends, I’m so glad I’m not stuck in the Linux terminal learning about networking internals and can instead just go to a webui and configure my router.

LatticeAnimal··on Kagi Small Web
I think that's the problem. I used to find it far superior to google. Now, there are a lot of queries where I am unimpressed with the results and end up trying google just to get better results. (like I used to do with DDG)

I've had a few experiences now where someone is standing over my shoulder asking me to look something up, and I search kagi, find nothing, then search google and find what they asked me to look up. Then when they ask "what was that other search engine you used first?" I don't feel compelled to vouch for kagi :(.

LatticeAnimal··on Show HN: Graft – Your local environment, everywhere
Cool project! How do language servers work with this system? Suppose I am developing PyTorch+cuda code on a remote machine, do I need to have that same PyTorch version installed locally?

If you run the language server remotely, how do you sync the file before it has been saved so that the user gets autocomplete?

LatticeAnimal··on PeppyOS: A simpler alternative to ROS 2 (now with containers support)
Physically crash. When we would block the control loop at all (even down to 100hz), we would get errors and then occasionally the arm would erratically experience massive acceleration spikes and crash into its nearby surroundings before e-stopping.

Re: Other comment. Yes, this was with ur3e s which by default have update rates at around 500hz.

LatticeAnimal··on PeppyOS: A simpler alternative to ROS 2 (now with containers support)
IIRC, the ROS UR controller runs at 200Hz and we’ve had arms crash when they run much slower than that.

The website claims “30hz polling rate”, “2ms latency”. Not sure if that is a best case or just for that demo.

LatticeAnimal··on Show HN: Timelinize – Privately organize your own data from everywhere, locally
Beautiful app. Surprised to see JQuery for your frontend; brings back good old memories.
LatticeAnimal··on Model Context Protocol
I'd love to develop some MCP servers, but I just learned that Claude Desktop doesn't support Linux. Are there any good general-purpose MCP clients that I can test against? Do I have to write my own?

(Closest I can find is zed/cody but those aren't really general purpose)

LatticeAnimal··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
In many ways this has already started happening. TS has enums, Svelte has runes, React has jsx. None of these features exist in JS, they are all compile-time syntax sugar.

While it is admittedly confusing to have all these different flavors of JS, I don’t think this proposal is actually as radical as it seems.

LatticeAnimal··on Splitting engineering teams into defense and offense
From the post:

> At the end of the cycle, we swap.

They swap teams every 2-4 weeks so nobody will always be on team defense.

LatticeAnimal··on An SSR Performance Showdown

LatticeAnimal··on Ask HN: Has degradation in the quality of ChatGPT and Claude been proven?
Recently gpt-4-turbo started rejecting writing some tests because it 'knows' it would exceed the max context. (This frustrated me deeply -- It would not have exceeded the context)

LatticeAnimal··on Can the New Mathstral LLM Accurately Compare 9.11 and 9.9?
Admittedly, I also assumed that the question was referring to version numbers instead of real numbers and was confused for a few seconds.

Though that may just be because I program a lot more than I do arithmetic nowadays.

LatticeAnimal··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Phone Numbers
> In New Zealand, non-urgent traffic incidents can be reported by calling *555 from a mobile phone. Alpha characters may also be used in phone numbers, such as in 1-800-Flowers.

Is this true? Do carriers actually accept [a-zA-Z] in their phone numbers? (if so, how are they encoded?). I couldn't find any reference to this elsewhere.

I had assumed that advertisement-numbers like `1-800-Flowers` had to be translated by a person when they entered the number on their phone via their keypad.

LatticeAnimal··on Italian streets that don't exist on any map (2022)
One of the things I appreciate about HN is the depth of discussion. I think part of that depth comes from the assumption that everyone who is commenting has read the article.

I wasn’t trying to be pedantic (even though I certainly was) I was just trying to grapple with this ideal

LatticeAnimal··on Italian streets that don't exist on any map (2022)
It seems like you’re talking about the online maps of Jerusalem and how they don’t match the real world.

That isn’t what the article is about (despite its title)
