Lariscus··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
Is it? The solar roof tiles where unveiled in 2016 as a finished product and Tesla took 1000$ deposits, 2 years later they where still figuring out if the tiles they had where durable enough as roof tile. In 2019 he claimed that autonomous robo taxis would be ready 'next year' they are still working on that.
Lariscus··on Tell HN: "Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Win+L" opens LinkedIn if you're using Windows
Some laptops have a dedicated Office key and that key just maps to Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Win. You can also open Word with Office+W or Teams with Office+T.
Lariscus··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
Why should I believe anything that musk says? He could have just made that up like the solar roof tiles or the robo taxis.
Lariscus··on Hacking Google Bard – From Prompt Injection to Data Exfiltration
Have you ever tried the Gandalf AI game?[1] It is a game where you have to convince ChatGPT to reveal a secret to you that it was previously instructed to keep from you. In the later levels your approach is used but it does not take much creativity to circumvent it.

Lariscus··on Epic targets Google app store after losing to Apple
How is that a point in favor of epic? AI generated assets to me are indicative of game developers who put the least amount of effort into their game. That stuff can stay on the epic store next to the nft games where it belongs.
Lariscus··on Are you blocking OpenAI access to your website?
Training LLMs on data that you don't own the rights to is copyright infringement. Why should I continue to feed a machine that already violated my rights?
Lariscus··on Ask HN: Who uses Unix over Linux today and why?
Anyone who uses TrueNAS is using FreeBSD. I think it's because of the ZFS license, but there is a Linux variant now, so something might have changed. I guess jails are also pretty nice; I don't think Linux had an equivalent feature until the dawn of modern containerization.
Lariscus··on Show HN: TripClub – Plan Travel with AI
When I asked it for a bicycle tour starting in Tarvisio Italy it suggested to go to a waterfall in Slovenia at 2am and then to travel 500 km to a small village situated between Turin and Milan so you can have coffee, also at 2 am of the same day. After that, travel back to Tarvisio to play golf at 4 am.

Lariscus··on Emotionally Numb: Expertise Dulls Consumer Experience (2021)
This might be one of the reasons why some competitive gaming communities seem so joyless after a while.
Lariscus··on Microsoft faces antitrust scrutiny from the EU over Teams, Office 365
Fiona Scott Morton withdrew from the position as Chief Competition Economist.

Lariscus··on Ask HN: Is your company continuing their WFH policies?
Yes, I am still mostly working remotely, and it seems that this will continue unless there is a significant change in the number of developers available. I think the companies around here are facing a severe shortage of developers, to the point where they hesitate to request a return to the office.
Lariscus··on Fairphone 4 is coming to the US
Yes, the battery is removable just like an old Nokia phone.
Lariscus··on Vit D supplementation and major cardiovascular events: D-Health randomised trial
The more I learn about Vitamin D, the less it appears that supplementation is necessary. The observed improvement in cardiovascular health among individuals with higher Vitamin D levels seems to be coincidental, as those who engage in more physical exercise also tend to spend more time outdoors.
Lariscus··on Mozilla restricts extensions on some domains on Firefox 115
This is great. I would like to block extensions on certain websites. For example, I probably should not run any extensions on the website of my bank.
Lariscus··on Mozilla restricts extensions on some domains on Firefox 115
Good news, there is a UI in v116.

Lariscus··on Ask HN: What EU country has the highest developer salary?
I will not deny that the countries you listed have several shortcomings, but accusing countries of extreme dysfunction and then, just a few sentences later, recommending the US made me laugh. If someone only cares about making as much money as possible, then sure the US is probably one of the best countries for that. Personally, I would consider factors like health care, police that is not homicidal, social safety net and other public services much higher.
Lariscus··on Should you standardise tools in your company? Case of Miro vs. MS Whiteboard
For video conferences I agree, Teams works pretty well for that. I also don't find the client any slower than any other Electron Apps, they are all equally bad. Its the group chats that I find severely lacking compared to Slack. So much wasted whitespace and incredibly inconvenient UX.
Lariscus··on Why I started (and stopped) making games
Take a look at this showreel videos[1][2].

Lariscus··on The Unholy Saga of Phoenix Hyperspace [video]
Running two operating systems at the same time using ACPI hacks is some wild stuff.
Lariscus··on Ask HN: Is my collection of mobile devices a fire hazard?
At the very least I would invest in a ABC or BC fire extinguisher. You might also want to consider storing your devices in a fire proof container like a metal box.
Lariscus··on Gren – an Elm fork
Meet the new boss same as the old boss. Its a shame really. Elm seemed so promising a few years ago. I still like the ideas behind the project but the history of Elm is not confidence inspiring.
Lariscus··on r/ProgrammerHumor will be shutting down to protest Reddit's API changes
You can change that.
Lariscus··on Ask HN: Is there an ML model that can go from an audio song to sheet music?
Is that worth it tough? It seems to me the effort of cleaning up sheet music generated from MIDI would be higher than transcribing the whole piece by hand.
Lariscus··on Coinbase Sued by SEC for Breaking US Securities Rules
>Saying you haven’t done it and not letting you do it is a bit of a catch 22.

You would also get into serious trouble if you would sell a drug without approval from the FDA, and they might deny your application because it isn't fit for purpose. Same with the SEC just because you want to register your crypto security does not mean that they have to be allowed on the US market.

Lariscus··on EU achieved independence from Russian fossil fuels
So do you suggest throwing Ukraine under the bus for cheap energy?
Lariscus··on Ask HN: Is Rust worth investing in as a reliable C-alt given its recent saga?
Every community has its fair share of drama. I wouldn't worry too much about such things.
Lariscus··on Tesla cancels Model S and Model X deliveries in Australia and other RHD markets
It seems that the number of accidents actually dropped for a while after the switch in Sweden but it increased again after people got used to the change. [1]

Lariscus··on Ask HN: What is the most barebone back end solution?
I would choose option B and use a really cheap <5€/m VPS with a sqlite database. Alternatively you could also use managed web hosting where you just upload you CGI scripts. This will probably cost around 5€ and is a bit more limited but they usually give you access to a proper database like postgresql and you don't have to do as much server administration yourself.
Lariscus··on Why we picked Java
I am mainly a dotnet developer but even I think that if you already have a team full of Java developers there is little to gain from switching to C#. Just the effort of learning a completely new set of libraries and frameworks would give me pause.
Lariscus··on JSON Hero: Enhanced JSON structure visualization
Another benefit of this is that my ad-blocker still works with these apps and that you can always fall back to default browser behaviour like opening a link in a new tab.
