LandR··on Pair Programming?
> The code becomes unclever and accessible to everyone on the call?

Yep, bullshit gets called out immediately.

> Divided by 4-5 or that’s per person?

Compared to other places, I'd say what took teams much bigger than us weeks or months we can do in a days.

But we have very little bullshit standing in our way, we work in 2 day sprints, but without all this sprint ceremonies. No retros, no standups, no kanbans, no story boards points. It's just "here's a business problem, you've got 2 days go make us a solution". After 2 days we can demo it, and if its good enough then we can move onto the next highest priority problem, or maybe the solution does X,Y and Z but then they decide they'd also like A, B and C we can keep working on it.

We also have our SME / PO on the call with us all day too, so we can get immediate feedback from them as we are dev'ing. EVerything is centered around having little no time between us actually doing the dev work and getting feedback on it. We can iterate really fast.

And because we have multiple devs on the call, we don't need PRs or code reviews.

Some developers absolutely hate this setup though, and just seem unable to code when other people are watching.

LandR··on Unemployed could get weight loss jabs to return to work
Hmm. I think a lot of these people aren't out of work because they are fat...

We have a lot of people who simply don't want to work. Getting them slimmer won't change that attitude.

LandR··on Pair Programming?
> think most of us would have flipped.

No.

At my current job we pair program using a zoom call for everything with the person writing the code sharing his screen.

Sometimes there can be 4 or 5 of us on the call.

We are far more productive than any place else I've worked.

> Hiking in altitude is hands down the hardest thing I did in my life

HOw much preparation did you do before hand ? I'm looking at a himalayan trip next year to around a 23k feet summit (over the course of 30 days or so). I'm taking a year to train for it, but I have no way to train for 'altitude', and as I understand it reaction to altitude doesn't correlate that much with overall fitness. You can apparently be super fit but still get altitude sick, which is concerning me.

LandR··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
I'm in the UK and know loads of people with Iphones or apple laptops, but zero people with the headset, and don't really know anyone with any interest in it.

I've never even heard of a single person talking about it.

LandR··on I've tracked every piece of clothing I've worn for three years (2021)
I've had years where I definitely spend less than £100 on clothing, and many years where I've spent almost £0 (I'm not counting running shoes here, or climbing shoes), those are kinda specialist, but day to day clothing definitely very very little.

I loathe clothes shopping.

LandR··on I've tracked every piece of clothing I've worn for three years (2021)
In regular training shoes I can barely run a mile without getting some pretty bad pains in the side of my knee. With good cushioned running shoes I can easily do 10-12 miles pain free.

I'm assuming it's a form thing, and that the running shoes just somehow naturally give me a better form, so I could maybe fix by learning how to run in normal non-running shoes, but I'm lazy and would rather just pay a few hundred every few months.

LandR··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
15 days a year is awful!

Here in the UK for a full time employee the minimum by law, regardless of how long you've worked at a place, is 28 days. For all full time employees.

I think I'm on 32 now, and sick leave doesn't come out the holiday allowance, that's absurd!

I own two proper Omegas and all the original Moonswatches. I don't feel it's hurt the Omega brand one bit in my eyes, I love both my Omega and Swatches for what they what are.

I like that Omega are happy to do this, I think it shows they don't take themselves too seriously, compared to say Rolex.

It also maybe helps that every interaction I've had with Omega sales people have been great, and every interaction with a Rolex sales person has been bad to awful.

LandR··on Is running a more efficient way to travel than walking?
Depends on how many miles you are doing. If you only want to do 1 mile at 7 min, then that is doable, if you want to do 10k at that pace... I reckon you'd have to be a VERY fit and strong runner.
LandR··on Is running a more efficient way to travel than walking?
I'd be very happy if I could just maintain a 8min mile over 10k.

7 min mile sustained feels like an impossible goal.

Hell, my best single mile is 6:48 and I'm dead at the end of that.

I collect watches, I'd love to have one of these but they are probably super rare to find second hand. Obviously I'd never be in a position to buy one from retail...

There are a couple of pretty special pilot only watches. I like IWCs top gun too, the one with the real top-gun logo on only avialable to pilots that have graduated Top Gun.

Available to top gun graduates: https://www.iwc.com/content/iwc/americas/us/en/articles/jour...

The retail version: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.watche...

The people that actually get these watches don't seem to want to sell them, understandably.

LandR··on Things to avoid in Ruby
I've been in a situation at a job where we were trying to debug some code, not ruby, but still written very concisely and clever.

To even have a chance of debugging it we had to pull out more variables etc so we could breakpoint each part rather than it being this complicated one liner.

After they debugged it, and fixed it, I watched them rewrite it back into the complicated one liner because it looks nicer...

I just don't get it. It's like they just didn't see the pain they went through.

We built our own hells.

LandR··on Crew trapped on Baltimore ship, seven weeks after bridge collapse
Trapped here seems to imply something that isn't really accurate ?

They can't leave the ship, and their mobile phones have been confiscated, but it's not like trapped under rubble or something.

LandR··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
We have those, and when I say inconsistent I mean inconsistent on the same query / exact same line of code on the same database.

e.g. stick a breakpoint, step over, see in the debugger that it was not populating everything it should. Then run it again, do the same and see different results. Exact same code, exact same db, different results.

5000 results back from the db, anything between 5000 and a handful were only fully correctly populated.

LandR··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
We are currently on the latest.

We had an issue last week where we had an obect like

    public class Foo
    {
        public List<Bar> Bars { get; set; }
    }
We'd query for some Foos, like:

    await _dbContext.Foos.ToListAsync();
and some amount of them would have Bars be an empty list where it should definitely be populated from the db. And it wasn't even consistent, sometimes it would populate thousands, sometimes it would populate a handful and then just stop populating Bars.

No errors, no exceptions, just empty lists where we'd expect data.

And so often we have to debug and see what SQL its actually generating, then spend time trying to get it to generate reasonable sql, when if we were using sprocs we could just write the damn sql quicker.

Another issue we have is the _EFMIgratoinsHistory table.

Sometimes we will deploy and get a load of migration errors, as it tries to run migrations its already ran... SO they all fail and then the API doesn't come back up... The fix ? TUrn it off and on again and it stops trying to re-run migrations its already ran!

LandR··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
Well, this month we had to debug an issue where EF was NOT populating fields on classes from the db, that it definitely should have been!

So it still seems flakey. I've never worked a single job that chose EF that didn't end up regretting it. Either from it being unreliable, migration hell or awful performance.

"It allows you to treat your database like an in-memory enumerable"

Then devs go and do exactly that and wonder why performance is so terrible...

I hate EF.

My parents dog knows where she is going in the car. On the way to the beach where she goes for her runs there are 3 rumble strips on the road, she always starts getting excited as soon as the car goes over them. Even though she's probably still 6-8 miles from beach!

They also take her to a local pub that is dog friendly and she has friends there. She knows when she is going there as she starts getting excited when the car turns right at a certain roundabout. Go left or straight on, nothing, but turn right and she's right up all excited!

EVen if your ORM doesn't support this, you can always just turn on profiler on SQL and capture the actual query.

LandR··on UK Fell into Recession in 2023
My salary in the last few years have jumped from 48k to 54k to 75k (and now have £6-£7k of extra income too, in interest etc)

But I had to move jobs 3 times in 2 years to get those raises.

And honestly, it still doesn't feel like enough.

Tell me 5-10 years ago I'd earn £75k and I'd think that was going to be amazing, now a £75k salary kinda just feels like an average salary. And I have no kids! I don't know how people on average salaries with children are coping at all.
