Laakeri··on Edsger Dijkstra – The Man Who Carried Computer Science on His Shoulders
This is just life in general. Some people get funding/support for their own ideas and some people do not. I don't think it is specific to academia.
Laakeri··on Edsger Dijkstra – The Man Who Carried Computer Science on His Shoulders
Is there something wrong in this? Better qualified candidates were preferred for a research job. Of course, if you argue that the job didn't actually require PhD-level knowledge/experience, then the problem is in oversaturated job market of the field, not in the PhD system.
Laakeri··on Edsger Dijkstra – The Man Who Carried Computer Science on His Shoulders
I don't get it. Isn't it well-known that PhD makes only sense for people who want career in research? In this case, why "wasting years and years" doing research would be a waste of time?

Laakeri··on Timekeeping in Financial Exchanges
Trading in microseconds frequency provides liquidity to those who trade in milliseconds frequency. Trading in milliseconds frequency provides liquidity to those trading in seconds frequency and so on...
Laakeri··on Mathematicians should stop naming things after each other
Computer science is not a subfield of math. Theoretical computer science is, but there is a lot more to cs than just tcs, for example: operating systems, programming languages, human computer interaction, etc.

I agree on your first point though, I think the concepts named after people are usually so abstract that the hard part is to really understand the concepts, not to remember the name.

Laakeri··on Cold Showers: For when people get too hyped up about things
I was expecting it to a have a section about deep learning hype.

Laakeri··on Why Is the Human Brain So Efficient? (2018)
Leslie Valiant has done some interesting work on quantifying the efficiency of the brain from the viewpoint of computer science, see e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9hRRh76QEA and the book Circuits of the Mind.
Laakeri··on EventReduce: An algorithm to optimize database queries that run multiple times
The value of a paper is the peer review by experts.
Laakeri··on Your statement is correct but misses the point
What is the point of this blog post? It appears to be about arguments in the Internet in general, but its implied point seems to be a rant against low-level programming.
Laakeri··on Google veterans: The company has become ‘unrecognizable’
They have hired with algorithm questions since the beginning and started with behavioral questions in 2018...
Laakeri··on The Fallacy of Premature Optimization (2009)
It's easy to throw hardware at a problem that can be parallelized efficiently. It's very hard to throw hardware at inherently sequential solution.
Laakeri··on Fashionable Problems
Why C++ string class is useless?
Laakeri··on Predicting When P=NP Is Resolved
SAT competition 2018 http://sat2018.forsyte.tuwien.ac.at/index.php had a track with random instances. The article "Generating the Uniform Random Benchmarks" in https://helda.helsinki.fi/bitstream/handle/10138/237063/sc20... contains the descriptions of the random instances used.
Laakeri··on Predicting When P=NP Is Resolved
SAT solvers are not fast on average. Even some very simple random distributions produce small (<100 variables) SAT instances that are very hard for the solvers.
Laakeri··on Challenging projects every programmer should try
For example a server log file?
Laakeri··on Challenging projects every programmer should try
Imagine inserting text in the middle of 1GB file. Moving 500MB of data will definitely take longer than 18ms, and thus will cause at least some visible lag.
Laakeri··on The world needs more search engines
For the "most of us" point, keep in mind that Google has a superior international infrastructure. At least in Finland, DuckDuckGo's loading time for search results is about 2 seconds compared to Google's <0.5s. This makes using ddg surprisingly annoying.
Laakeri··on Can Computers Prove Theorems?
However currently the most difficult and time consuming part of the job is proving those interesting theorems.
Laakeri··on Quantum supremacy: the gloves are off
Maybe something that solves a natural problem instead of an artificial one.
Laakeri··on C++ is not a superset of C
Have you seen practical cases where there has been issues because C code is not compatible with C++? The blog has nice toy examples, but would be nice to know if they actually occur in the wild.
Laakeri··on Is C++ fast?
Not a big surprise that hand implemented data structures with domain specific optimizations are faster than generic standard library implementations.
Laakeri··on Stigler Diet
Optimization is not dangerous, it's just that coming up with the correct model is hard.
