LNSY··on Marked by Stars – Agrippa's Occult Philosophy
If anyone is interested in this stuff, Justin Sledge is an excellent youtuber who covers esoterica like this in a scholarly fashion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJkft2lUMD0

I've been using them lately and I think they are the bees knees.

LNSY··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
You have a hilarious amount of confidence about the competency of America's oligarchs. Elon is a financial scammer, his money all comes from government subsidies.

He ain't as smart as you think he is.

LNSY··on California’s population shrinks for second year in a row
Alas, the rural place I'm from has all those problems, but is also far away from anything.
LNSY··on California’s population shrinks for second year in a row
Also, I don't know how I'd be able to hack living in Los Angeles in my 20's in the current era. Right now I'm a mid-career engineer making mid career wages. I don't live big, but I'm looking at other countries to buy property in -- simply because I can't afford anything out here.

California needs to build a heroic amount of housing as quickly as possible.

LNSY··on California’s population shrinks for second year in a row
Remote work means people can maximize their wages else where.

A lot of people also don't know what it's like to live / grow up in a small town. I suspect once they meet middle American culture they'll be coming right back to California.

LNSY··on 8-Bit Punk (2003)
I was part of this scene from the late 90's until about 2015. I remember feeling bitter about McClaren getting involved. To me 8-bit was about claiming a tiny bit of utopia, and exploring the possibilities of pop.

After this article it began to be all about style and irony and it just wasn't any fun anymore. Just like what he did to punk.

LNSY··on Ask HN: Is it ok to reject a job because I don’t like their software?
That is precisely the best reason to reject a job.
LNSY··on Ten Years of ThinkPadding
https://mntre.com/media/reform_md/2020-05-08-the-much-more-p...

I've been thinking about getting this laptop. I am a little hesitant because it is far more of a project than other laptops, but it seems to give me that Thinkpad x200T vibe.

I am a web dev, and I've been considering pairing this with an Apple Ipad as a sort of second screen / browser.

LNSY··on Ten Years of ThinkPadding
I've been debating getting an MNT Reform: https://mntre.com/media/reform_md/2020-05-08-the-much-more-p...

It's got about the same specs as my main webdev laptop -- which is a Thinkpad X200t -- with a modern GPU.

It's got a mechanical keyboard and a trackball!

LNSY··on The impact of sexual abuse on female development: a longitudinal study
Have you tried EMDR?

It's awful -- like getting slapped in the face repeatedly -- but it works.

LNSY··on The impact of sexual abuse on female development: a longitudinal study
same. My abuse was very early, which it tends to be for men. My abusers weren't removed from my life until I was six, and even then were brought back over and over again. I am 40. I became a successful software developer. Then I finally couldn't ignore what happened to me. It was a brutal 3 years of therapy and trying to find my way out of the emotional pain I felt.

I am just now getting my career on track, but I am essentially starting from square one again. As a programmer your primary tool is your brain, and when it simply isn't working...

What, to me, is positive, is that we are talking about it. Just being aware of this pain and not replicating it is what is needed to shift the world.

LNSY··on John Milton Argues for Divorce (2021)
I think the primary reason Jesus never argued for divorce is that he didn't reach middle age.
LNSY··on The Rise of Performative Work
The impending global melt down of climate change and bitcoin isn't enough? The fact that our entire government handles a pandemic worse than some 3rd world countries? The fact that our country just let more people die than all of our previous wars combined to support capitalism?

The fact that polluters have been allowed to leave ticking time bombs all around our country without having to pay for the clean up, that we are still mining coal, that our obesity crisis could be solved by walking and taking the bus, but politicians are terrified of letting gasoline rise to its actual price?

I dunno man, you want more?

LNSY··on The Rise of Performative Work
Have you considered the possibility that you are ignorant of just how stupid and parasitic this entire system is?
LNSY··on The Charles Mingus CAT-alog (1972)
I love Mingus.

The Watts Towers complex has a museum to Mingus attached, as well as another museum of local artists attached. I'd highly recommend a visit. It's a beautiful neighborhood full of very nice people.

LNSY··on Google fined €150M, Facebook €60M for for non-compliance with French legislation
They just take a check and keep quiet.

These types of engineers will also build stupid stuff that doesn't work, because that's what the specification written by a group of business people who have never even looked at code before said.

It's also why frameworks like React are popular.

LNSY··on Raspberry Pi Boot to BASIC
The computer I learned to program on was an Apple II+ with rusted keys that you just had to slam. I still type loudly. It booted into basic.

I, of course, desperately wanted LOGO (and of course the robot turtle, too!), but my family couldn't afford it.

LNSY··on DoorDash is requiring engineers to deliver food
Thanks for this!
LNSY··on DoorDash is requiring engineers to deliver food
P.S. I have seen software deploys add 30 seconds to transaction before, it certainly has an effect on a companies bottom line.
LNSY··on DoorDash is requiring engineers to deliver food
That is a good point. You're still cutting out 1/6th of my productivity, which has to be quantified.

How would you quantify this?

LNSY··on DoorDash is requiring engineers to deliver food
Let's do some math.

So, say you're paying me $15 an hour. Really, if you own a business by the time you pay for taxes, infrastructure, capital outlay and insurance you are really paying about $45 an hour for me to hang out and do what you tell me to do at varying levels of competency. You need to make that much more value from my labor per-hour or you are going to go out of business.

Say I have a piece of software that, because of a miscommunication between the developers who wrote it and the people who have to use the software (ideally this is what management is for but, lolz) has added 30 seconds to a transaction I do 20 times an hour. This means that, suddenly, there are 10 minutes of labor added to this task on aggregate an hour.

If you have a piece of software that wastes 10 minutes of my time, you just wasted $7.50 worth of my labor. But, of course, I'm using this software for 8 hours a day. So that is $60 of money wasted a day.

So, really, you thought you needed to make $45 an hour from my labor, but you just added $7.50 to the total. So, $52.50, and now you have a morale problem to boot: because the folks who are using the software are now accomplishing less than they used to for the same amount of work.

LNSY··on Dramatic growth in mental-health apps has created a risky industry
I don't think you can "swear off" your neurology, but it's good you don't see it as a disability. It isn't.
