L3viathan··on Anonymous GitHub account mass-dropping undisclosed 0-days
Option-Shift-Hyphen.

Just --- only works when you have the text replacement thing on (the same thing that turns (C) into ©).

L3viathan··on Tell HN: X is opening any tweet link in a webview whether you press it or not
That sample was complete though as long as there wasn't too many tweets. I.e, as long as your query was specific enough, you _did_ get all tweets.
L3viathan··on Look, Another AI Browser
Firefox still exists.
L3viathan··on Show HN: Uber for Flights
Why does it have to have a chat interface? What's wrong with entering airports in different fields? I'm not convinced it's needed for a "routine trip" feature, you could just have some sort of bookmark feature..
L3viathan··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
You uninstall all snaps, uninstall snapd, and block it from being installed via APT.

Then you add e.g. the mozilla PPA such that its firefox package gets installed instead.

L3viathan··on HTMX is hard, so let's get it right
You can do that if you want to. It'll just be slower.
L3viathan··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
While true, that is true for everyone, there's no special law about police.
L3viathan··on Too Many Open Files
Nitpick, but:

> At its core, a file descriptor (often abbreviated as fd) is simply a positive integer

A _non-negative_ integer.

L3viathan··on Longest road and rail tunnel is being built under the Baltic Sea
> more people have an intuitive sense for how heavy a ton is compared to elephants

Yeah, I think most elephants don't have a good sense of _any_ man-made unit.

L3viathan··on Discworld Rules
> It isn’t, like, a hidden fact or anything.

It really is, in-universe. Almost noone knows this save other maiar. The wizards are perceived as men by most people, them being maiar is far from common knowledge.

L3viathan··on How X-Plane Works
As a Mac user, your best bet is probably X-Plane. There's only a few short tutorials, but given your history you should have no issues :)
L3viathan··on Valve releases Team Fortress 2 code
Well in a sense you are right that it is lazy, in that it would be quite a lot of work to disentangle those parts.

So they could probably do it, but it would be costly, while just releasing the TF2 code is basically free.

L3viathan··on Markdown's Big Brother: Say Hello to AsciiDoc
Only technically.

By that name, yes, but much of Markdown was "discovered" rather than invented, having been used in email/newsgroups/... for a long time.

L3viathan··on Ruff: Python linter and code formatter written in Rust
The point they're trying to make, I think, is: Black/Ruff format, or any other formatter necessarily need to operate on universal rules. In context, sometimes these rules don't make sense. I still would love some kind of stateful linter and formatter, where it suggests me changes that I can then accept or ignore (and won't be told about again).

Formatters _are_ a compromise. They make your coworkers' code nicer, and your code worse.

L3viathan··on 3blue1brown YouTube Bitcoin video taken down as copyright violation
At the very least they could trigger a real qualified human review of it immediately.
L3viathan··on Just: Just a Command Runner
You can put `./scripts` in your $PATH, if you want.
L3viathan··on I made an ls alternative for my personal use
I think ripgrep specifically is counted in the comment you reply to as a tool that _does_ do one thing well, and that one should use it (or grep) in combination with an ls, instead of giving ls filtering abilities.
L3viathan··on Go-Safeweb
> as there's no guarantee it will be maintained

As opposed to official projects like Allo, Wave, Reader, etc. that will?

L3viathan··on Apple introduces iPad mini built for Apple Intelligence
> if you [] live in a country where it is just easy to cross borders as a part of life, [] providers still charging ridiculous fees

What places other than the EU does the "easy to cross borders as a part of life" apply to?

L3viathan··on Building a single-page app with Htmx
While I agree with this project being a bad idea, both 1 and 2 are addressed by HTMX itself, via hx-preserve and Out-Of-Bounds swaps.
L3viathan··on Generate pip requirements.txt file based on imports of any project
Huh? Messing with the system Python install absolutely can break your system.

Just use venvs, or install separate Python versions for development e.g. via pyenv. You likely don't want to use the relatively outdated Python version shipped with Debian anyways.

L3viathan··on Eza: A modern, maintained replacement for ls
Steam Locomotive, an annoying little ASCII art film to punish you for typos. Funny exactly once.
L3viathan··on Eza: A modern, maintained replacement for ls
It's saying "modern, maintained", implying that ls is either not maintained (wrong), or ls is not modern (can be argued to be true). Only one of those two properties need to hold for the entire label to fit.
L3viathan··on Ask HN: Why are PWA user install stats so hard to find?
> Going from 1 install to 270 installs is a 270% increase

No, it's a 270x increase. In percent that's much higher.

L3viathan··on Show HN: I made a puzzle game that gently introduces my favorite math mysteries
These kind of things are also why four colours are actually _not_ always enough, in the real world. Countries can have exclaves :)
L3viathan··on Python: 10 Cool Tricks with the * Operator
> any generator. For example, the classic range

`range` is not a generator.

Regarding number 8, instead of `Counter` you can also use dicts:

`unique = list(dict.from_keys(iterable))`

L3viathan··on How to untangle phone numbers
Maybe not a regular customer, but there's other reasons you might have a phone field:

> In Israel, certain advertising numbers start with a *.

> In New Zealand, non-urgent traffic incidents can be reported by calling *555 from a mobile phone.

L3viathan··on iOS404
The counter-proposal is: don't do it. This comment by the Apple guy sums it up well IMHO:

> Colleagues and I have discussed this and don't see a way to grant write access to the end user's local file system in a way that safeguards the end user's interests.

L3viathan··on iOS404
Because there's typically at least a minimum of safety checks before an app can go into the app store, whereas a website can do whatever it wants (and can).
L3viathan··on The Disappointing Tea.xyz
Likewise. I _did_ sell those stellar tokens they gave to (longtime?) users for about 50 bucks though, before deleting my account.
