L3viathan··on PEP 701 – Syntactic formalization of f-strings
Probably because the string is so short.
L3viathan··on Push notifications – What to push, what not to push, and how often
Unless the developers used notification channels (on Android) correctly, then I can disable only the "spam" channel, and not the "messages" channel.

Granted, an app sending spam notifications often doesn't want to make this distinction..

L3viathan··on Why if TYPE_CHECKING?
> However, Python doesn’t have the compile-time check, because it’s an interpreted language that is dynamically-typed, which means its only real place to check is at runtime

Pet peeve: Python is compiled (into bytecode), so it could theoretically do checks at compile time. The "dynamically-typed" part is correct and is the real reason.

L3viathan··on Word2Vec received 'strong reject' four times at ICLR2013
And people in academia were all over Word2Vec. Mikolov presented his work in our research group around 2014, and people were very excited. Granted, that was _after_ Word2Vec had been published, and this was a very pro-vectorspaces (although of a different type) crowd.
L3viathan··on Metric Time
> Also nice how they IMMEDIATELY ran into a continuing fraction 1/3, which is exactly the point of the 60-minute hour, 24-hour day, or 360-degree circle: lots of factors.

While I agree in principle, this example is not evidence of it. It's not like we measured the amount of sleep needed and it's precisely 8 hours. A more reasonable thing to say would be: You need to sleep for 3.5 metric hours.

L3viathan··on jq 1.7
Sounds like this is fixed in 1.7
L3viathan··on uBlock Origin Lite now available on Firefox
Even better: if it offers a way to pay a few cents to read _this one article_. I don't want to subscribe to hundreds of websites for reading a single article every so often.
L3viathan··on FreeBSD replaces bubblesort with mergesort on SYSINTs
> alcohol interlock system to prevent drunk driving.

Wait, what? _All_ new vehicles need to have this? Or do they just need to be constructed such that one can be installed easily?

L3viathan··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
> Those rough moderators would close off discussions for the most trivial reasons, yet SO still allowed those discussions to be indexed by Google (despite rel="nofollow" having been a thing since 2005 or so).

At least for "closed as duplicate" that is working as intended: "Closed" doesn't necessarily mean "you shouldn't have asked that question". In the ideal world, a post being closed as duplicate just allows people that phrase the duplicated question differently to also find it.

L3viathan··on Why do we pick our nose? (2015)
Also: "It's harmful... because if you had a surgery in your nose then picking it will prevent it from healing."
L3viathan··on About GitHub’s use of your data
> As shown below, we received 0–249 notices from July to December 2022, affecting 250–499 accounts.

Seems like we can increase the lower bound ever so slightly: It couldn't have been zero, otherwise it would affect "0-249 accounts".

L3viathan··on It’s not wrong that "🤦🏼‍♂️".length == 7 (2019)
It is useful: When iterating over a string in Python (which I hope you agree _is_ useful?), you get that many parts.
L3viathan··on Show HN: Gut – An easy-to-use CLI for Git
The one thing I would reconsider is `gut revert`:

All other subcommands either don't exist in git, or do (almost?) exactly the same thing (gut/git switch). But `gut revert` is more of a `git reset` or `git checkout` rather than doing what `git revert` does.

L3viathan··on Little Snitch Mini
> per decade

So you're selling a more expensive subscription?

L3viathan··on Firefox Android now supports Tampermonkey
> This repository contains the source of the Tampermonkey extension up to version 2.9. All newer versions are distributed under a proprietary license.

You can of course do whatever GPL allows you to the code in the repository (so up to version 2.9).

L3viathan··on Tweetbot is back down again
>brands have even less of a chance of moving

Good

>I'm probably not going to get BBC Breaking

https://mastodon.cloud/@BBCBreaking_bot

Not official, but why does it matter?

L3viathan··on Python Asyncio
asyncio is _not_ implemented as threads. It has features where it can wrap a sync function inside a thread in order to turn it into an async function, but if you just write "normal" async code, all your code is running in a single thread.
L3viathan··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
> keybase.io has been great

> Crypto thing they attempted

well...

L3viathan··on Only virgin type of olive oil consumption reduces the risk of mortality: study
Recent studies show[1] that adding a bracketed number after a claim increases credibility, as most people don't actually check the claim[2] anyways.
L3viathan··on .js is a non delegated domain
They didn't google after they had this idea? 2-letter TLDs are reserved for countries, whether the alpha-2 code is currently used or not. And creating a country is harder than you might think, more dedicated people have tried and failed (e.g. Sealand).

Title is misleading by the way.

L3viathan··on Show HN: Rocketry – Statement-based scheduling framework for Python
async is just concurrency, not parallelism, but I see now that multiprocessing seems to also be supported: https://rocketry.readthedocs.io/en/stable/handbooks/task/exe...
L3viathan··on Show HN: Rocketry – Statement-based scheduling framework for Python
Neat!

Looks very clean. Is parallelism/multiprocessing (or even distribution over multiple workers) a thing you plan on making possible?

L3viathan··on Ask HN: Why hasn't the ACH system been more abused?
SEPA Direct Debit, which works on the pull profile and is very similar to ACH, is extremely common at least in Germany.

You can only use it (as the puller, not the pullee) if you're a business though.

L3viathan··on Google cracks down on VPN based adblockers
I'm in the same boat.

I recently had to upgrade my phone, and oh boy is is annoying to get root working with Google Pay and my banking app. It still works, but it took me a few hours(!).

I'm seriously considering switching to iOS for my next phone.

L3viathan··on Rety – Live coding without the stress
If you use a terminal-based editor, you can also use asciinema.org.
L3viathan··on What comes after Git
1: What does it matter? I do $packagemanager install git and am done. What do I care whether it's got dependencies or consists of several binaries?

2: Fair enough. Although a multi-file backup doesn't sound hard to me either.

3: That would give me the opposite of peace of mind. I can't clean up my messy WIP commits?

4: Sounds like a nice feature.

5: This just uses the term "tag" to mean something else that git tags. But I agree that it would be nice to be able to label several commits (distinct from tags).

L3viathan··on Scunthorpe Sans, A font that censors bad language automatically
With a built-in exception for Scunthorpe, but not for the million of other examples why automatic swear word filtering is a bad idea (Shitake, Sussex, classic, peoples' names, ...).

A fun piece of art, but I hope nobody actually uses this font.

L3viathan··on No-op statements syntactically valid only since Python X.Y
I think this specific change is making Python simpler. It was a weird exception that previously only a limited subset of all possible expressions could be used as a decorator. Now the rule is just "you can decorate a function or class with any expression".
L3viathan··on My students cheated... a lot
I don't think the comment you replied to meant to say that getting rid of grading on a curve would stop cheaters, merely that it would stop some of the bad effects cheating can have on those not cheating.
L3viathan··on Ask HN: What small library or tool do you want that doesn’t exist?
Yes, I can never remember that. It's faster to just go to some online tool than to look up how to convert timestamps with `date`. Especially since I often switch between Linux and "BSD" (macOS). Something like this would be nice:

    $ datez 1651483224
    human-readable-timestamp
    $ datez human-readable-timestamp
    1651483224
