KwanEsq··on Google Fixes Android Kernel Zero-Day Exploited in Attacks
Well that depends, the camera app is generally accessible on locked phones, so the question is, can the camera app make use of USB-connected cameras, and if so is there any restriction on accessing such cameras in locked mode (like there is a restriction on accessing past photos).
KwanEsq··on Servo's progress in 2024
>(I'm unclear whether or not those components, which have surely been continually developed since then, have been backported into Servo)

I believe the article makes clear that they have.

>Servo main dependencies (SpiderMonkey, Stylo and WebRender) have been upgraded

KwanEsq··on Amazon UK to stop selling Bloomsbury's books
Don't worry, Amazon screws authors directly too when they self-publish, by using the cudgel of Kindle Unlimited to choke possible competition in ebook sales.

KwanEsq··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
Shame the link isn't to https://www.nintendo.com/successor/ so it would attempt to pick a video with the most appropriate date format.
KwanEsq··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
They announced a direct on 2nd April.
KwanEsq··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
The "it's" to which that sentence is referring is the previously mentioned "xiaohongshu, or "little red book"".
KwanEsq··on Rust's Sneaky Deadlock With `if let` Blocks
It's very much not backwards compatible, that's why they are doing it in an Edition.
KwanEsq··on Optimizing the Ion compiler back end
Spidermonkey just follows Firefox version numbering, so far as I know, and the linked bugs in the article seem to have landed in a mix of the 132 and 133 milestones, so you'll have to wait a couple of release cycles for the full effect.
KwanEsq··on Mozilla fixes Firefox zero-day actively exploited in attacks
The patch: https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-release/rev/d2a21d94...
KwanEsq··on What Firefox trains are we in?
There's also https://groups.google.com/a/mozilla.org/g/dev-platform/c/ffR... , if that would count
KwanEsq··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
Without n-gate around anymore there's literally no one who can
KwanEsq··on Mozilla's Original Sin
Ah, I assume this is linking to the Mastodon post advertising the article instead of the actual article due to jwz.org's response to requests with HN in the Referer header?
KwanEsq··on I'm forking Ladybird and stepping down as SerenityOS BDFL
Chrome forked from Webkit, which forked from KHTML, which apparently dates from 4th November 1998, so Chrome's base is 25 years and 7 months old tomorrow.
KwanEsq··on The curious case of the missing period
"Damning with faint praise" is hardly a secret code.
KwanEsq··on Claude 3 beats Google Translate
Yeah this is my experience with DeepL as well. It might (sometimes) do better than Google Translate with lone sentences, but give it a few paragraphs and it'll entirely ignore some, and other times it starts repetitively rambling about stuff not even in the original text, quite frequently cars/houses/money.
KwanEsq··on Help us invent CSS Grid Level 3, a.k.a. "Masonry" layout
Nice to see this getting some push and attention. I still remember seeing Mats Palmgren (seemingly?) single-handedly proposing/speccing and implementing this in Firefox a few years ago. Glad it hasn't just died because it was a Mozilla proposal/experiment (with proper experimental stage), instead of something Google just dumps on the web fait accompli.
KwanEsq··on PyPy has moved to Git, GitHub
I mean you can't really compare them since git doesn't even _have_ branches as Mercurial understands them. git's branches would perhaps better be called twigs in comparison. git's lightweight branches better map to Mercurial's topics or bookmarks, though neither perfectly. And Mercurial has even lighter weight branches since you can just make a new head by committing without having to name anything, and it won't yell at you about a detached head like git will.
KwanEsq··on Army ants use collective intelligence to build bridges
I think you'd enjoy Alastair Reynolds' sci-fi stories, particularly the short story "Glacial" in the "Galactic North" collection.
KwanEsq··on Unix Time reaches 1.7 billion
Interesting if morbid bit of serendipity that that should occur during the age of 27 when the 27 club also exists.
KwanEsq··on Officially Qualified – Ferrocene
If someone from Ferrous sees this, I'd advise putting the price in English punctuation when writing the article in English. It's a needless stumbling block having the comma and period in the wrong place.
KwanEsq··on UK Address Oddities (2018)
>Or why a house in Owls Green, a village of about 20 houses near Ipswich, would be numbered 2820 (cute).

For those who aren't native British/English-speaking, this is presumably a cute reference to the village's name of *Owls* Green, since at least in the UK the onomatopoeia for one of an owl's sounds is "too-wit too-woo", to which "two-eight two-oh" is similar sounding.

KwanEsq··on Exploring Linux command-line space time
I've always preferred "The Full Article", in contrast to reading _only_ the headline.
KwanEsq··on Can Govt Debt Solve Fertility?
Unless I've gone blinder the author seems to have put no thought towards what sort of childhoods might be had by those whose parents had had them purely for monetary gain.

Perhaps this is a satirical post?

KwanEsq··on TypeScript 5.2's new keyword: 'Using'
https://github.com/tc39/proposal-async-explicit-resource-man...
KwanEsq··on Inkscape is hiring: Accelerating the GTK4 migration
Cascade of Attention-Deficit Teenagers, I believe. A coining of jwz's.

Invoked for the tendency to do rewrites instead of maintaining and bug fixing, since rewrites are more "interesting".

KwanEsq··on W3C re-launched as a public-interest non-profit organization
WHATWG only picked up the abandoned HTML torch when W3C went off into fantasy land with XHTML 2.0. W3C was still and always relevant for CSS.
KwanEsq··on Python 3.11 is faster than 3.8
Meanwhile Java(ECMA)Script bucking the trend by getting its failure out of the way at 4.
KwanEsq··on AdaCore and Ferrous Systems Joining Forces to Support Rust
Depends on the device and software. At least on my phone's Firefox browser a long-press of a link will bring up a menu that includes the URL (though it can run into space constraints for long URLs).
KwanEsq··on Make Front End Shit Again (2018)
Huh. When I read that I assumed Blink referred to the <blink> tag, but reading again you might actually be right that it means Google's browser engine. Truly anachronistic indeed.
KwanEsq··on Opensubtitles.org breached – Email addresses, IP addresses, Passwords, Usernames
Firefox Android (and iOS it seems?) actually supports autofill for other apps, one just needs to enable it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/end-of-support-firefox-...

(I've used it quite successfully when it was in a separate app called Lockwise)
