Kristine1975··on Apple confirms iOS kernel code left unencrypted intentionally
>A PR person would bristle at the idea of denying to unlock the phone of a terrorist.

Why exactly? If Apple wants to make privacy and security its unique selling point, it has to deny an FBI request to unlock one of their phones. Anything else would be a PR debacle.

Kristine1975··on Apple confirms iOS kernel code left unencrypted intentionally
>altruism

Then why does Apple avoid paying taxes?

Let's not kid ourselves: Apple is a company, and companies are only "altruistic" if they expect that it will help their bottom line.

Kristine1975··on Sweden asks to meet Julian Assange inside Ecuador embassy
>New Zealand is just as much a lapdog of the USA as Sweden

This doesn't sound like something a lapdog would do (February 2016): http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/296076/us-requests-fa...

Lawyers for the US were at the High Court in Auckland today, where they asked Justice Asher to give the appeal priority and set an early date for the hearing.

Justice Asher declined that request but set a date for August.

Kristine1975··on Sweden asks to meet Julian Assange inside Ecuador embassy
Between leaving Sweden and entering the Ecuadorian embassy Assange spent several weeks in UK, while a British court decided on the validity of the European arrest warrent against him. Plenty of time for the US to demand his extradition.
Kristine1975··on Sweden asks to meet Julian Assange inside Ecuador embassy
It seems to me that it's the Swedish police that agreed to talk to Assange in the embassy. Not Swedish diplomats.
Kristine1975··on The Science Behind Honey’s Eternal Shelf Life (2013)
Disrupting is all about challenging antiquated regulations :-)
Kristine1975··on The Science Behind Honey’s Eternal Shelf Life (2013)
Is it actually possible to verify that the "1000 yo" honey is actually 1000 years old? Because if not I'm totally relabeling honey I bought at the supermarket and disrupting the luxury food sector.
Kristine1975··on The Science Behind Honey’s Eternal Shelf Life (2013)
Article is from 2013 and some of the links in it are dead, unfortunately. Nevertheless, really interesting.
Kristine1975··on Sony agrees to pay millions to gamers to settle PS3 Linux debacle
It would have been better if Sony had to put the Linux support back in. What good are $55 (after jumping through lots of hoops) if you want to run Linux on your PS3?
Kristine1975··on Exploiting Recursion in the Linux Kernel
Possibly because the developers of X, Y and Z test their own software for bugs and exploits, but nobody tests the combinations X+Y, X+Z, Y+Z, X+Y+Z.
Kristine1975··on “PayPal has demanded that we monitor data traffic as well as customers’ files”
Also Paysafecard. It's even anonymous: Buy in a store with cash and use it to pay online.
Kristine1975··on Reflection in C++
Definitely. That's why I'm to hyped for compile-time reflection in C++: http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2016/ (search for "reflection")
Kristine1975··on Reflection in C++
If you search for "reflection" in the list of papers at http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2016/ there are some proposals to add compile-time (as opposed to the run-time reflection described in the article) reflection/introspection to C++.

Of course compile-time reflection can be used to generate the code/data structures necessary for run-time reflection.

P.S: The blog post is from 2011

Kristine1975··on A brief update
Except that the West didn't care when Saddam Hussein gassed the Kurds. Only when he invaded Kuwait did the buck stop. Then again, Kuwait had oil. The Kurds hadn't.

Also the trial against Hussein is widely regarded as a show trial.

Kristine1975··on A brief update
You forgot the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing

I guess that's what a culture of militarization does to you: You start to confuse the police and the military.

Kristine1975··on A brief update
>before going around spreading hate and supporting cruel, inhuman dictators.

I'm doing what now?

BTW: Western countries didn't give a fuck about Gaddafi's human rights violations (except from condemning them verbally) until he started to lose power. Then suddenly they decided they should invade Libya.

Of course Libya has a lot of oil reserves, so this is to be expected. Can't bite the hand that keeps your economy running...

Kristine1975··on Reddit censorship
FWIW the "others don't see my posts, only I do" is called "shadow-banning" or "stealth banning": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stealth_banning

The practice involves making a user's contributions invisible to all other users, but visible to themselves, making them less likely to create new accounts to add the same material.

Kristine1975··on A brief update
Which people exactly?
Kristine1975··on A brief update
>A DoD software contractor has no control over congressional level politics.

Then just say no when the DoD asks you to work for them.

>are you suggesting we should NOT make things better for our soldiers to stay safer?

I certainly am. The safer "our" soldiers are the more people they can murder.

Kristine1975··on An Open Letter (The DAO Attacker)
Wouldn't they have to find out his/her real identity first?
Kristine1975··on An Open Letter (The DAO Attacker)
So they pay the taxes. There should still be quite a bit left.
Kristine1975··on An Open Letter (The DAO Attacker)
If ether had no value there would be no talk of undoing the transaction. That's my guess at least.
Kristine1975··on Long Names are Long
There are two kinds of Hungarian Notation: Systems and Apps Hungarian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_notation

In Systems Hungarian notation, the prefix encodes the actual data type of the variable.

Apps Hungarian notation strives to encode the logical data type rather than the physical data type; in this way, it gives a hint as to what the variable's purpose is, or what it represents.

Kristine1975··on Long Names are Long
MacOS's Core Foundation API has naming conventions related to object ownership: "create"/"copy" = you own the object returned by the function, you have to release it after you're done with it. "get" = you don't own it.

Kristine1975··on The most alienating thing that happened to me as a female engineer
That is a big difference though: It shows that these comments are not welcome on HN.
Kristine1975··on The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative makes its first investment
>Go some go good; today!

I do: I pay my taxes instead of trying to avoid them like Facebook does.

Kristine1975··on The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative makes its first investment
I think codecamper was being sarcastic :-)
Kristine1975··on [dead]
Is there a more reliable source for this than Gawker?
Kristine1975··on United States of Paranoia: A growing tribe of troubled minds
I would say that depends. 4chan's technology board /g/ for example seems to respect Terry A. Davis, who has schizophrenia, for his TempleOS.

On the other hand, transgendered people are often considered to be mentally ill by the politics board /pol/ and bashed mercilessly.

P.S: Terry also has an account here on HN.

Kristine1975··on The FBI 'is manufacturing terrorism cases' on a greater scale than ever before
>and has nothing to worry about.

How can you be so sure about that? Maybe the FBI thinks that A and B use some kind of code and B did mention terrorism to A. It's not about what really happened, it's about what the FBI thinks happened.
