KorematsuFredt··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
Having spent some time with Google as SWE, I think Google was by far the best engineering company I have worked with. Even Amazon, Microsoft were terrible when it comes to software engineering.

I am one of those engineers who do not care about culture as long as I am getting paid for the efforts I put in. Google in that sense beat others by HUGE margin.

The engineering work was however very different. We focused on right engineering solutions instead of just business aspect. While that kind of attitude hurts us in short term, it pays big in long term.

KorematsuFredt··on The American West is figuring out how to keep cool
BS. Most cars drive on freeways and interstates most of the time, especially the large trucks etc. traffic in residential areas is generally pretty low and it more only during mornings and evenings.

This is just war on cars.

KorematsuFredt··on The American West is figuring out how to keep cool
Meh. Why should we reduce our quality of life ? We can always use AC in cars and and at home.
KorematsuFredt··on Google shuts down GPay app and P2P payments in the US
P2P is a loss making feature for nearly everyone involved. If you have some other way to obtaining users and maintaining growth, you are better off not supporting P2P payments.

P2P payments are also extremely tiny portion of revenue.

Are you saying USPS is not going to screw things up ?

> I wish the post office was a bank and they hosted their own pay apps.

Lol.

KorematsuFredt··on California is about to side with PG&E – again – to kill community solar projects
Simple policies are easy to understand, easy to comply with and have more predictable externalities and second order effects.

The PG&E poppycock is hard to understand. Even I do not fully understand their BS like net metering.

Just make solar panels cheaper so that a lot of people see benefit in buying them to meet their energy needs and lower the energy costs in a way it benefits PG&E too.

If I understand correctly, installing a better + solar panels might solve a lot of these problems for some homes.

KorematsuFredt··on California is about to side with PG&E – again – to kill community solar projects
California's politicians are corrupt and incompetent. PG&E is a great example of this. PUC of California is supposed to protect consumers but consumers right now are paying record high energy prices in California for a third rate service.
KorematsuFredt··on T-Mobile to acquire most of U.S. Cellular in $4.4B deal
No one is forced to use G or M but they make better products. It is not monopoly. There are excellent alternatives available very easily.

Comcast, ATT are different. You simply dont have much of a choice even in cities meant for internet. San Jose has like 1Gbps ATT and 100Mbps Comcast as the only options.

KorematsuFredt··on T-Mobile to acquire most of U.S. Cellular in $4.4B deal
Lina Khan is the enabler of these things.
KorematsuFredt··on US thinking about letting Ukraine use its weapons to strike Russia
This is not a forum of geopolitics experts but I think this wars is the biggest threat we currently have for tech progress. If Russia takes over Ukraine next step would be proxy wars in Europe, breaking down EU/NATO coupled with US domestic politics turning nativist which will burn our future. This war must end one way or another sooner.
KorematsuFredt··on Southwest Airlines now available on Google Flights
Other than garbage airlines like Frontier, I have never had reasons to complain about any American airlines that much. Competition is so fierce that they all are pretty bad in my opinion.

> Google’s problem has always been in product follow through.

Google is large enough to not care about small opportunities. It ends up focusing on bigger opportunities that only it can execute well. Google's ability to shut down products that dont work is an insult to user but a very good corporate strategy and they deserve kudos for that.

Now, coming back to the "follow through". Google Search, Gmail, Chrome, Android, Photos, Drive, Cloud etc. all are excellent examples of Google's long term commitment to the product and constantly making things better and keeping them relevant for the market. Many companies like Yahoo! had a head start but could not keep up with their mail service.

Sure it has shut down many small products but that is because they were unlikely to turn into bigger opportunities. They often integrated the best aspect of those products into their other well established products such as Google Trips became part of search and Google Shopping became part of search.

I think we should all take a pause and just appreciate the amazing work Google, OpenAI, MS and many others including those in academia have done. We do not know if Google or OpenAI or someone else is going to win the race but unlike many other races, this one makes the entire humanity move faster. Keep the negativity aside and appreciate the sweat and nights people have poured into making such things happen. Majority of these people are pretty ordinary folks working for a salary so they can spend their time with their families.

May be in the HN bubble "South Asia" is an expected term, very likely because HN crowd might be subjected to far left academia. But it is offensive and racist for actual Indians.

I don't care about whatever you frame. South Asia = Pakistan.

KorematsuFredt··on Is Tesla's reputation ruined? It depends on who you ask
I personally don't care about Musk's reputation. I was hoping that the Model 3 prices will go down and the build quality go up. In my opinion it is simply not worth $40K or so.

At the large well known company where we worked we joked that we paid our +1s some money to sit through the course around diversity.
KorematsuFredt··on A company is building a giant compressed-air battery in the Australian outback
Is compressed air in itself source of energy ? Or does it depend on the external air pressure as well ? For example I compress air in a canister and move it to outer space or deep underwater, does the energy we can exploit out of it goes up or down ?
KorematsuFredt··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
Well, at one point the academia did think about it and then tried using IED instead but then they thought it might blow up in their face :)
KorematsuFredt··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
> The above commenter framed the situation as the DEI folks being necessarily strategically dishonest and malicious.

I think the question of whether DEI folks are dishonest is entirely irrelevant (but important). You have to put yourself in the shoes of some diversity officer and think of what you will do to feel important, save your job and get promotion.

You will obviously have to come up with idea like "diversity statements", "diversity OKR" for your engineering managers. Most engineering managers are busy building products, they might think it is stupid but still would play along since the cost of compliance is very low.

When someone stands up to this, diversity officials get the villains that further help them justify their role and existence. "Look this person is creating unsafe work environment, he needs to go". All this results into an organizations which loses its ability to question DEI initiatives even more.

It is not my claim that DEI folks are all vile, they get into a conference room and make these grand plans. It is just that the moment you create positions like "DEI officials" the incentives are aligned to set the ball rolling.

KorematsuFredt··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
It is not "established" at all. No one calls their restaurant "South Asian", it is always Indian/Pakistani.

"South Asian" = > Racist and Hindu-phobic is the established norm.

KorematsuFredt··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
South Asian is not "reasonable" it is pretty much racist. We white people could not be bothered with actually noticing the difference between Pakistan and India is the reason.

> Lingayats from Vaishnavites

This tells me you are probably some kind of humanities graduate from some murican university ?

KorematsuFredt··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
A lot of things have "said purpose" and the "real purpose" because of which such absolutely kafkaesque things survive in organizations.

The said purpose of-course is to make sure that the candidate is "committed to diversity". We can argue all day on whether a statement is in any way good measure of it. It really isn't. I have helped people write such statements and we have always written it with cynicism and great contempt for the people who might actually read it.

But the "real reason" which such concept found a great foothold in modern American universities is that it kind of acts as top kill to get rid of potential people who might actually ask questions critical of various ideological positions that the university's internal bodies might have. You either want a radical zealot or at least someone who is willing to play along for his own career-maxing goals. What you don't want is someone who can call the emperor naked. Diversity statements are excellent way to achieve this as I have seen people write one line diversity statements such as 'I don't have one as I do not think diversity is important'. Such person IMO is more intellectually honest and would be a good addition to faculty position but will not be hired.

You are right that there is tons of resentment around the DEI BS that people have to go through. Tech companies have esoteric training problems with terms like "allyship" and "bystander effect" and all that which basically smells rotten to lot of engineers but they cynically complete those trainings any ways.
