KorematsuFredt··on If Inheritance is so bad, why does everyone use it?
Here is my take on it.

At one point "Object Oriented" became "Blockchain" (or now Gen AI) of those times. You had to be "object oriented" in order to be taken seriously. This applied to everything. Even finished software products were called "built using object oriented".

The esoteric concept of inheritance became popular after that. At some point it became so popular that people figured out that it is not really a good thing.

KorematsuFredt··on How the California forest that was Endor in 'Return of the Jedi' was obliterated (2022)
I was referring to the comment that said it would take 2500 years to grow "that kind of forest".

What I am saying is that it is possible to grow "that kind of forest" if you have money in much shorter time. Tree farming is one way to make the whole thing profitable (and hence sustainable) but it can be designed to resemble a natural forest with sufficient biodiversity and so on.

For example we can take a deforested region in Haiti or India or Zimbabwe, grow tree farms on say 10K acres of land and reserve another 10K to grow a more traditional forest. We don't have to wait 2500 years to grow sufficiently large trees which can host wide variety of species of fauna. Even for smaller shrubs and such we can do enough research to grow them faster with help of better irrigantion, enriched soil etc.

One of the reason why this does not happen already is because we have reduced the entire topic to zero sum between normal people and tree people.

> sustainable housing must be walkable and integrated, not car-centric like American suburbia always is.

I am not sure why such statement should be made. Large homes with huge backyard offers great quality of life in ways the densely packed animal like city human farms can't.

KorematsuFredt··on How the California forest that was Endor in 'Return of the Jedi' was obliterated (2022)
With sufficient investment in this it is pretty easy to grow a large forest. May not be redwood forest and may not be tree whose bark is wide enough to drive a car through, but you can grow pretty large trees in < 30 years which can capture tonnes and tonnes of carbon every year.

Suburban housing boom, building more homes is one good way to put that into long term storage while reducing cost of housing and improving our carbon footprint as suburban homes can last for a century.

We can also genetically modify trees to grow faster and bigger.

KorematsuFredt··on How the California forest that was Endor in 'Return of the Jedi' was obliterated (2022)
Your prof was correct. We need to cut down existing large trees, put them into long term use where they can be used for 100+ years and plant new trees in their place. It is the simplest and very natural way to capture carbon.

Fully grown trees are mostly carbon neutral, growing trees on other hand are capturing carbon. Perhaps we can cut down large trees, coat them with very durable recycled plastic and simply store them on coastal line.

Canada and USA can heavily subsidize logging industry where

1. They have 100 year plan to plant and cut trees.

2. Wood gets exported to poorer countries where deforestation is a problem.

KorematsuFredt··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Ah if that is your true point, then no, I am not an Apple fanboy. My daily primary use phone is Android but my work machine is typically the highest available MacBook. (I can not stand windows). I buy iPhones for my family members.
KorematsuFredt··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Yes. Thought customer means a lot of things. I have purchased their MacBooks recently, iphones for family and such.
KorematsuFredt··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
None of these arguments are very satisfactory to me as a consumer and this appears to be more Mafia like behaviour than a genuine concern for market based competition.
KorematsuFredt··on What does Alan Kay think about LLMs?
I wish someone could provide a tl;dr of that answer to us simpletons. His writing style is something I am unable to comprehend.
KorematsuFredt··on Canada Must End Reliance on Cheap Foreign Labor, Minister Says
To give context some cities in India hold a massive "send off" ceremonies for Indian students going to Canada and they rent a stadium to do so. The are not just sending by truckloads and boatloads but hudrends of flights full of indian students.
KorematsuFredt··on Canada Must End Reliance on Cheap Foreign Labor, Minister Says
To elaborate a bit more:

The points based system is eventually administered by a bunch of government servant and the "points" are subject to the internal politics of the government.

Consider the french and english language proficiency. It is established based on some exam. Now in countries like India there is a vast network of institutes which will help you to beat those tests without having actual proficiency in the language. But what if you fail ? Pretty simple. You find a smart spouse who can crack it for you and then pay her a large money to help you move to Canada and then file for divorce after couple of years.

Same goes for things like job offers in Canada. It can very easily be hacked. You pay a Canadian business owner who happens to be the third cousin of your mother a nice sum to give you an offer. Then when you go to Canada you work for someone else.

The market is much better indicator of a person's worth to society than any points based system. In USA you cross the border and make a living for yourself and you are an American. We do not care what Trump, IRS or CBP have to say in this regard. It attracts hustlers and badass people.

KorematsuFredt··on Canada Must End Reliance on Cheap Foreign Labor, Minister Says
As someone deeply involved in immigration advocacy in USA I can assure you that the Canadian points based system is terrible. It is the classic case of grass is greener on other side effect.
KorematsuFredt··on The worst users come from referral programs, free trials, coupons
All customers are worse customers in my opinion, and those who seek max value for their bucks are often the worst. But I am always that customer. I harassed my car dealer so much that it took 9 months but he sold me the car for the exact price I have been demanding.

KorematsuFredt··on Cities are asking SCOTUS for more power to clear homeless encampments (2023)
Overall giving communities more power to handle this situation seems like a good idea. It is important that we treat less fortunate people with compassion but there has to be some mechanism of where we draw that line.

Poor neighborhoods of San Fransisco look worse that some of the Indian slums and are taken over by criminals, theives and rapists not to mention drug dealers.

KorematsuFredt··on Is Google Getting Worse? A Longitudinal Investigation of SEO Spam in Search [pdf]
Google is better than Bing and anything else for my day today work. Few things I miss though :

1. Spam is more than in past. The outrage porn, clickbait headlines etc. are lot more than in past.

2. Dominance of few domains despite poor quality content. For lot of coding related queries, dev.to, hashnode etc. appear in top results despite being clearly spammy.

3. Paywalled content. Most irritating part is sites like medium which appear in top results, have high value content and yet are behind paywall.

Internet is growing and so are Google's problems but I think they are still on top of things.

KorematsuFredt··on Elon Musk just escalated his war on workers
Rather truckload of salt.
KorematsuFredt··on Walgreens, CVS pharmacy staff at breaking point: here's what their days are like
> What policies were implemented that hurt legal immigrant doctors and nurses?

Trump's war on immigrants did not differentiate between legal vs illegal. One common problem I have seen for example is asking (via RFE) a MD as to why his profession is considered "speciality" and asking to prove this job needed a special degree.

KorematsuFredt··on Walgreens, CVS pharmacy staff at breaking point: here's what their days are like
Nursing is a different problem altogether. A vast majority of healthcare staff in USA is immigrants. Nurses from Phillipines, India etc. Doctors primarily from India, Pakistan, Iran etc.

Trump's war on immigration definitely hurt these groups massively followed by the green card backlog for Indians. Thousands of Indian doctors and nurses left their jobs and went back to India creating a major stress on the healthcare sector and especially the rural areas. H1B visa is oversubscribed by 8x these days and Doctors and Nurses get pushed out by tech companies. No one wants to hire a doctor with only 1/8 probability of joining due to visa issues.

As more people age and we have young people moving out of smaller towns, this problem is going to become even bigger.

KorematsuFredt··on USPS is offering Covid tests again
> Maximum allotment was 4

I have lost the count already because it is not worth my mental cycles to actually wont them. This is 4 tests one time or several boxes 4 times ?

> You only received them by explicitly filling out and submitting a request form.

Never did such a thing. In fact HN is the first time I am finding out such form exists.

KorematsuFredt··on USPS is offering Covid tests again
I never wanted this tests and never requested them, in fact I have no idea how to tell USPS to send me those. It is possible that is a simple form ? Good chance that either someone entered my address incrorrectly or local USPS has some target they need to meet.
KorematsuFredt··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
> The EU has the right to mandate rules on what corporations sell to its population.

I don't see how EU has a "right" to decide what the population can buy or not. Sounds like tyranny to me.

KorematsuFredt··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Please buy an Android then. Why insist on giving your hard earned money to someone who does not care about your requirements ?
KorematsuFredt··on USPS is offering Covid tests again
USPS has mailed me countless tests and I have thrown them in dustbin. Not sure why taxpayer money is being wasted on this crap. As long as tests are available at reasonable price in the market, only poor people should be getting them from government and even there relying on local city administration is ideal.

This USPS business looks like scam to me.

KorematsuFredt··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
Yup. Everything thinks the other person is greedy while they themselves are made of pure virtue.
KorematsuFredt··on Human embryo models grown from stem cells
Reducing human suffering is a noble goal and infertile couples could benefit from this research. I would rather have western world make giant leaps in this field and also set the direction of ethics here rather than just banning it and leaving it up to Russia and China to conduct this sort of research in their secret facilities.
KorematsuFredt··on My Caste
I would like to point out that author is a liar and dishonest. He claims he is "OBC" which is not really a caste but rather a legal classification for affirmative action.

Author's name is Meel, which indicates he is actually from the upper caste named Jats who historically have been landlords, kings and such. No one considered Jats as OBC until very recently in 2016 where this dominant caste members caused massive riots and street violence to demand such legal classification so they could benefit from affirmative action in government jobs.

This is literally like the thieves from San Fransisco calling themselves victims of capitalism after robbing local Macy's.

KorematsuFredt··on Fusion Foolery
You can write a same gloomy article about invention of an electric bulb or even a wheel. Imagine cutting down an entire tree that also kills Fred when the tree fell, herculean efforts to then slice it off to create a wheel in which Cole the lost his fingers, and what do you do with that wheel ? Create a claypot ? You could have just used a wooden pot instead. Not to mention the clay pot broke.

Scientific "stunts" which author correctly points out pretend to be graceful but come at an extreme cost and failures. But anyone has done any science knows this far too well that this is how you push boundaries of science and make progress.

KorematsuFredt··on Ways in which Tailwind CSS is a better choice than Twitter Bootstrap
I think I like how the article tells you that this comparison is basically like comparing Legos with IKEA furniture. But in reality I think more apt comparison is getting wood and tools from HomeDepot vs buying make your furniture kit from IKEA. Writing plain old CSS would be like go to forest and cut down your own tree.

People who are dissing on TailwindCSS come across as more emotional than sensible. Tailwind is a far better fit for any large application that needs to be unique in its design which is basically any major website today. An e-commerce site today does not need 10 different types of buttons but it rather needs 5 buttons and one button that completely stands out.

Tailwind has gotten the complexity out of writing CSS to do all the common things yourself but it has not created and opinionated design philosophy either. It is not meant for your weekend project, but I do think nearly every large site will eventually move to a more Tailwind like framework.

KorematsuFredt··on The absurd complexity of server-side rendering
