Knee_Pain··on IBM, Red Hat and Free Software: An old maddog’s view
but you are still not entitled to anyone's source code unless you are a user of the program.

do you want to pay RH's contract and distribute their code for free? well, find someone to host a VPS that will receive petabytes of traffic each month then.

you will soon find out, it's really not that "free"

Knee_Pain··on Mozilla VPN: CVE-2023-4104: vpndaemon wrongly implements Polkit authentication
The funny thing is that even though it's a Mozilla product now and even though it's somehow "integrated" in the browser, I still have to log into it separately regardless of the fact that I am already logged with with Firefox Sync
Knee_Pain··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
GDPR is to be implemented independently in each country. There is room for interpretation, it's not a granitic ruleset from above
Knee_Pain··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
But how much time until the hardware is changed? And all the current models?
Knee_Pain··on Why early modern books are so beautiful
I'm still trying to find a way to use the IM FELL typeface on my terminal emulator. It just feels.... right
Knee_Pain··on Malicious Android Apps Slip into Disguise
Yes, just audit a 1M LoC app every 2 weeks!
Knee_Pain··on Malicious Android Apps Slip into Disguise
Ok? Or buy a Samsung and only use Samsung's native apps?
Knee_Pain··on SMS traffic pumping fraud
I don't know, which people were laughed at in the industry for the last few decades because they wanted to have control over their own computers and run their own code on their own machines?
Knee_Pain··on SMS traffic pumping fraud
And? Feature phones cannot run a 2kB application that generates TOTP codes?
Knee_Pain··on SMS traffic pumping fraud
TOTP does not require one app for each service, plus phone scams and sim cloning is rampant. Seems you have limited experience un both subjects
Knee_Pain··on SMS traffic pumping fraud
iPhones have 2FA embedded into the keychain.

I don't know about Android but Apple users can literally start adopting TOTP without changing a single thing.

Providers should simply add instructions telling people that if they have an Apple device they can just go to the keychain and add the code displayed on the screen or use the QR with the camera

Knee_Pain··on SMS traffic pumping fraud
SMS is not the way to go and you are conflating capabilities with poor engineering.

You cannot install a barebones TOTP app on your Nokia 3310 because it is closed source.

Most services don't offer third party TOTP because they are pressured into pushing their shitty proprietary apps.

But TOTP not only is more secure but it's completely offline. It's close to the best solution and totally exists right now

Knee_Pain··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
Adobe products look the same across Windows and macOS. I don't think they are using so much native stuff. They even ported their software to ARM, I think they could manage a Linux transition
Knee_Pain··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
Photoshop exists on macOS, which is a *BSD. If something already runs on *BSD it's quite simple to port it to Linux.

But they just won't do it until it becomes used enough

Knee_Pain··on Harvard professor Francesca Gino was accused of faking data
Everyone in academia knows that academia is shit.

People are warned well in advance by peers, professors and everywhere online, and yet they still do it.

Then, once the sunk cost creeps in, you can't help but partake into the rotten system and wish to keep it as such.

Just leave and do private research, it's not worth it

Knee_Pain··on An open-source, free circuit simulator
"HN is not one person" and "this might inspire someone" can justify basically anything. It's not really a good argument
Knee_Pain··on An open-source, free circuit simulator
I thought the HN audience liked innovative stuff. Not the same old Windows-only proprietary circuit simulator
Knee_Pain··on I'm betting on HTML
As always, people almost never RTFM. When I see webdevs implement a hamburger menu with pure CSS I almost shed a tear.

For the love if god, study your tools! (and not from SEO spam articles)

Knee_Pain··on A Nordic revolt against 'ugly' modern architecture
You realize the "beauty and grandeur" you are referencing comes from aristocratic families boasting about their wealth and making it obvious to the poor that they are better than everyone? The buildings you are thinking about were quite literally made to humiliate others and boost some rich guy's ego. So much for values and tradition
Knee_Pain··on A Nordic revolt against 'ugly' modern architecture
Which buildings of any era have you been able to unsee? Can you teach us this technique?
Knee_Pain··on A Nordic revolt against 'ugly' modern architecture
New stuff is new. Gets adopted and publicized. Public craze ensues. Reactionaries midlessly push back. Society reevaluates. New stuff is old now. Less of it, becomes assimilated.

New stuff is new....

Why are people even surprised things always go like this? It's like the stages of grief, once you know the trick you just roll your eyes knowing what will eventually happen

Knee_Pain··on Could the world go PFAS-free? Proposal to ban ‘forever chemicals’ fuels debate
I wonder if they were pressured by the journalist to come up with the buzz word or it was something they used colloquially between peers
Knee_Pain··on Could the world go PFAS-free? Proposal to ban ‘forever chemicals’ fuels debate
Can someone explain where the (suspiciously) scary nomenclature of "forever chemicals" comes from?

Google neutered their normal search engine, so in order to search by date I went to Google Scholar and I have found no use of such term well into the 2000s.

It looks like a journalistic invention, does anyone have am origin story pointing to a scholarly source?

Knee_Pain··on Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor LK-99 preprint revision 2
Then what was the point? If I saw a unicorn and took out my phone in a hurry I could get a video of exceptional quality, granted I uploaded it somewhere without too much compression. Seems like you wanted to create a little abstract story ignoring the reality of hardware
Knee_Pain··on Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor LK-99 preprint revision 2
My iPhone can take stunning videos. This is not 2010 anymore
Knee_Pain··on The BBC on Mastodon
Really you have no idea? Maybe because it's off topic?
Knee_Pain··on The BBC on Mastodon
But Mastodon is not the only way to manage accounts and publish stuff. It has so much overhead because it has to look and behave like a Twitter clone, whereas you could simply have a barebones password protected web admin panel to allow each journalist to publish with their BBC-approved credentials.
Knee_Pain··on The BBC on Mastodon
How is it ironic? Their Mastodon instance is private and basically read-only, not social media.

I don't think this is the thread best suited for excreting your obvious pent-up anger

Knee_Pain··on The BBC on Mastodon
Yeah, this is a gripe I'm having recently with governments and news publications creating a whole website and Mastodon instance just to have a few publish-only profiles and comment-only options.

Just implement a smaller Activity Pub server, no need for this Twitter clone stuff

Knee_Pain··on The Psychotherapy Myth
You (rarely) can force a cure onto people, and in the case of mental problem it's basically impossible.

If the science was clear in that depression would be heavily contained if the sufferer engaged in physical activity, good sleep, good diet, good general routine and zero stuff like social media or mindless entertainment, then how man people would actually follow through?

We criticize psychs for their love of giving pills, but we are the first who are lazy and stupid and would never actually do what's best for us
