Kluny··on June’s record-smashing temperatures – in data
Hey man, I can't be the person to fully educate you on this but 2.7 degrees of average increase does not translate to a slightly warmer summer day. The language used makes it very misleadingly sound like no big deal, but it is a BIG deal. Without trying to be cliche, there is an XKCD for this and here it is: https://xkcd.com/1732/

A short way to get the point across is that when the earth's average temperature was 4°C lower than it was in 1990, that was an ice age. "Boston is buried under almost a mile of ice".

Imagine such a dramatic climate change in the other direction, 5°C hotter than 1990.

Also, the CRTC helpline and Service Canada and CRA account logins. We were unable to access government services.
Kluny··on I need to stop being boring
Can you really describe kids or parents with any kind of meaning using a binary "good" and "bad"? Aren't most people great in situations that suit them and allow them to thrive and use their skills and talents, and bad in situations where they don't have the tools to be successful?
Kluny··on Lawn mowing frequency affects bee abundance and diversity (2018)
They might have mispelled "bylaw" which is a municipal ordinance with legally binding power, but only on a local level.

Kluny··on It's now your fault they don't know about it
I doubt that's the case with this particular author.
Kluny··on It's now your fault they don't know about it
Nobody cares about Yelp.

Plus, you're not getting a decent tip from them no matter how hard you try.
Kluny··on Amazon to close all of its physical bookstores and '4-star' shops
Yeah, that actually sounds like a cool concept.
Kluny··on Winning Wordle
Sounds like a quitter to me.
Kluny··on Heat people, not spaces (2015)
Do you prefer living in the cold?
Kluny··on No minimum parking requirements? No problem for Fayetteville, Arkansas
It's even stranger when you realize that probably only 20% of trips in New York are conducted by car, and yet they are by far the largest physical presence everywhere you go. Actually quite obnoxious.
Kluny··on Ask HN: Does anyone else miss TouchID?
No, I’m still holding out with my original iPhone se. Seriously, how does faceId even work with a mask on?
Kluny··on Ask HN: Is it wise to accept an intern position at Meta?
Hackernews is down on Facebook for lots of good reasons. But outside of this bubble, working for a big name like Facebook or Meta will impress basically every future employer and open hundreds of doors for you. Yes, do it. The great thing about internships is that you don't have to stay after it's over, if the company's ethics make you feel gross. You can get firsthand knowledge instead of relying on the peanut gallery around here.
Kluny··on Passwordle
It's not hunter2, correcthorsebatterystaple, password123, swordfish, or my gmail password. Anyone got it?
Kluny··on Building a modern home in the woods
Well, there are backup plans :)
Kluny··on Building a modern home in the woods
I think it's a cashflow vs capital thing. I'm in a similar situation - my wife and I aren't making much money at the moment, but our condo increased in value by so much that we were able to buy a million-dollar property. Granted it would have been a 300k property about ten years ago, but here we are. And due to the condo sale and the magic of financing, we have about 100k leftover to spend on renovating it and making it feel worth the money we spent. But we don't have much cashflow, so we need to spend that money as efficiently as possible, because once it's spent it will take a LONG time to build back up.

The walls are concrete, there's probably no sound transference at all.

If you're feeling bad, do this arbitrary thing instead of this other arbitrary thing to fix it. Alright.

Kluny··on Uniqlo dangles $8.8M salaries to draw talent in Big Tech showdown
I just don’t understand why a clothing company needs so many engineers. It’s not as if we know anything about fashion.
Kluny··on Uniqlo dangles $8.8M salaries to draw talent in Big Tech showdown
Meanwhile half the items on their website are out of stock right now - maybe they ought to spend the money on production instead? That’s the only way they’re going to get my money.
Kluny··on The Revenge of the Hot Water Bottle
When I moved in with my partner, she came with a small George Foreman grill. She used it occasionally for reheating burritos, but together we found out that it makes grilled cheese so quickly and easily, that grilled cheese went from being an occasional treat to a weekly staple. I highly recommend it over the pan option.
Kluny··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
Yeah, it's trash and you're almost always better off just reading the original story (if you haven't already, since it was probably on the front page of a major subreddit).
Kluny··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
I couldn't say whether this story is true or not, but I do have to remind myself to steer clear of /r/antiwork and take it with a grain of salt. I'm a person who is happy when I'm working hard, and my current life goals include gaining skills in an industry where I can't really operate as a solo entrpreneur with a startup business. I need a job where I can learn, and I need to work hard, both for my goals and for my own happiness. Reading too much /r/antiwork makes me bitter and angry, which colors my relationships with my coworkers and employer. It's not good for me, even though I agree with most of their philosophical points (ie, pro-union, don't work for free, insist on your rights, etc).
Kluny··on Quit Your Job
> interested in problems of governance from beyond the established liberal democratic paradigm

So... communists? Hippies? Not that there's anything wrong with either, I just find that such people are really into work-trade and barter, but they always have cash for alcohol and cigarettes.

Kluny··on Quit Your Job
Deeply, deeply pretentious.
Kluny··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked – Part II
We're willing to pay. We just think the employers should be paying their share too.

Kluny··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked – Part II
They're in Canada, where the covid stimulus was $2000/month up until October 2021. Not disagreeing though, CERB is long over and anyone who got that money has spent it. Before the pandemic, I lived in a relatively cheap bachelor where the rent was $1250. I got laid off in the first week, and didn't find a job til a year later.

My groceries used to cost $200/month, now they're $300. Internet and my phone cost $120, leaving $330 month to cover anything that wasn't bare minimum essential. Thank god I already had a bike, because paying for my car would have eaten the last of the money. Also, CERB was a taxable benefit, but deductions weren't taken, meaning that I'll have to pay back some of it at tax time.

Not even joking, if I hadn't moved in with my wife a month before covid hit, I'd be homeless today, CERB or not.
