Klonoar··on Apple and a Hacker's Future
I will never understand comments like this.

You are on the wrong site if you think that HN was ever a bastion of the hyper OSS mindset.

This is a site powered by and run by one of the arms of a startup incubator/investor. It has always been clear on that.

Just because it has “hacker” in the name doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Klonoar··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
That's not "basic etiquette".

I've had plenty of people throughout my life express wanting to come over to my place and hang. There's definitely a social grace of how you'd phrase it, but it's not like it's some alien concept.

Klonoar··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
> - "Why always ethnic food like pasta? What's wrong with white people food, like Cheeseburgers?"

You respond with "that's what I'm making, you're welcome to bring anything yourself to add to it".

Covers dietary issues along with a decent dose of "STFU and show up". People are complicated but you also give too much of a shit.

Klonoar··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
> "Scrollback that follows you rather than your client"

This form of LLM speak annoys the absolute shit out of me. It's a bot trying to emulate the worst reassuring sales copy you could imagine.

Klonoar··on Why Omarchy Exists
If your issue with Omarchy is politics, then it's probably not just DHH.

But I'm going to guess that means you haven't actually looked into it deeply.

Klonoar··on The JavaScript Midlife Crisis
> Or just write faster JS using it's lower-level language features.

You are simply ignoring the history of these tools and why people have begun to reach for the languages in question.

Klonoar··on The JavaScript Midlife Crisis
> Rewrite a bundler in Rust and you haven't only made it faster. You've also shrunk the pool of JavaScript developers who can maintain it. The new tool still looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, but it's a different beast altogether. Its internals retreat behind a black box that fewer people hold the keys to. The source may still be open, but the door to contributions is closing.

Alternatively, there's a pool of JS developers who shouldn't be maintaining critical infrastructure to begin with.

It's not a black box, those codebases are usually open and the only thing holding you or anyone back is learning anything outside of a small pond of JavaScript.

Write non-browser-things in fast languages. It is not a complicated concept - even less so in an era where stuff is getting written for you.

Klonoar··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Elon unfortunately may have a leg to stand on, because it doesn't functionally matter whether "anyone can make an account and see it". I don't believe any legal ruling to date has been fine with that distinction.
Klonoar··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Scraping is legal, but IIRC scraping authenticated contents is not.

Isn't Nitter abusing account sign-in for this?

Klonoar··on Apple Announces Foldable 'iPhone Duo'
I am happy that I will have managed to completely skip the requirement to use FaceID.
Klonoar··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
I am almost positive that there was one version of IE where having any space or newline before the DocType would trigger quirks mode.
Klonoar··on Firefox 155.0
Always possible there’s some buggy CSS compiler in the wild that ships a crazy rule and nobody tested in Firefox.
Klonoar··on Fastpotify
You should draw a distinction between “implementing the GUI” and “implementing OS behavior”. Flickering aside egui works mostly fine for the former; the latter falls apart on most non-browser-and-non-toolkit-wrapper approaches because people never stop to handle those things.

E.g your double click on title bar thing sounds less like egui to me and more like somewhere in the stack is missing an AppKit flag.

Klonoar··on Playa Phone
It’s an art piece, numbskull.
Klonoar··on Yen weakens past ¥160 per dollar, eroding intervention gains
It’s been in this range for a year or so and flight prices and hotel prices still suck for most people.
Klonoar··on Relm4 makes developing beautiful cross-platform applications idiomatic
Because it’s GTK4 and it’s expected that you know what that is if you’re using this.
Klonoar··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
That sounds like it’s more on those apps, because they aren’t doing much special unless I’m missing something.
Klonoar··on We are not going anywhere
Libraries contribute to the humans being able to review things well, so no, they may still have their use cases.

An AI might be able to create everything “from scratch”, sure - but I ain’t sitting there reviewing every bespoke thing it shits out. I want that offloaded to make it maintainable.

Klonoar··on Everything I own, owned
Per the author, that open source project is not doing the same things as what they cobbled together.
Klonoar··on hdiutil is deprecated in macOS 27 Golden Gate
The former has been taking the latter’s job for years now.

Nobody really cares that they were originally for separate things.

Klonoar··on Malicious Rust crate Arrayref runs a build-time payload
The lockfile confusion/bug is indeed a thing, but OP is noting that b58 was downloaded, which makes me think it's actually used.

I ran in to the lockfile bug myself a day ago and noticed that dependency-feature-flagged-crates show up in Cargo.lock, but their crates aren't downloaded.

Klonoar··on OpenRouter is joining Stripe
2006 called and wants their valuations back.
Klonoar··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
Nobody disputes they had issues before, it’s the rate of issues that is even more noticeable now.
Klonoar··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
Is it still a Webview?
Klonoar··on Stripe Clinches over $7B Deal to Buy AI Firm OpenRouter
I don’t think you understand just how much money Stripe currently makes.
Klonoar··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
The comment they replied to is just as useless though.
Klonoar··on Thunderbird's Desktop Calendar Visual Redesign
Apple, unlike Mozilla, gets to set the rules.

Traffic lights are one thing you shouldn’t mess with IMO.

Klonoar··on Mozilla says stricter antitrust measures against Google 'threaten Firefox'
I will 100% forget Ladybird until it actually matters.

This is a discussion about real browser engines in the wild, not in-development ones.

Klonoar··on Thunderbird's Desktop Calendar Visual Redesign
...can someone tell me why the hell the macOS traffic lights are indented like that?

Like is this just a mockup I'm not understanding correctly?

Klonoar··on Mozilla says stricter antitrust measures against Google 'threaten Firefox'
Blink and WebKit have diverged enough that there are minimum 3 engines now, not 2.
