Kichererbsen means chick peas in German - I set up my home office to ride out the pandemic in my kitchen and when I needed a username I looked up and saw a can of chick peas...

Kichererbsen··on Shells are two things
I refused to learn PowerShell for way to long. Now that I have, I've started to like it quite a lot. It has some weird stuff, but hey. So did Perl ;-)
Kichererbsen··on Liquid democracy: two experiments on delegation in voting
You'd think, but time and time again, the "rabble" votes against it's own interest. We had an initiative for 6 weeks holidays - shot down. We had other good (IMO) initiatives on UBI, Healthcare, you name it - shot down. The system is quite stable and is also not immune to lobbying and fearmongering. It seems both qualities can be true at the same time.
Kichererbsen··on QTS refits Dutch datacenter to warm thousands of homes with waste heat
Also known as a heat pump. Depending on the temperature lift, these can be very efficient. Low temperature district heating networks are an interesting thing to look into: Low temperature means the heat losses in the network are smaller (heat losses, if I remember correctly, are proportional to the temperature difference) and at the consumer side, a heat pump can lift it back up to the temperature required for a floor (or ceiling) heating. This is _way_ more efficient than an air-to-air heat pump or even an air-to-water heat pump. [Citation Required]

But how would you connect such a device to your iphone?
Kichererbsen··on The Rise of SQL
literally. it was my first real exposure to functional programming.
Kichererbsen··on What’s the strangest thing you ever found in a book?
That's basically the plot of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince!
Kichererbsen··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
Take a course on parenting. I got a _lot_ of value out of the STEP training (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting). You wouldn't get a dog without learning how to train dogs - getting a kid should follow the same logic!
Kichererbsen··on Oggify: Download Songs Directly from Spotify
I think that's what they're getting at: Download, then use client of choice?

Did they seriously forget to mention Step 6? Check the toilet bowl after flushing. Did everything flush? If not, flush again. Is there any residue left on the porcelain? If so, use that toilet-brushy-thingy to clean that and flush again. Pro tip: lift the seat _before_ using the toilet-brushy-thingy to avoid droplets on the seat and then replace seat when done for marital reasons.
Kichererbsen··on Largest bacterium ever discovered has unexpectedly complex cells
Disclaimer: I am not a biologist or whatever someone who studies this stuff is called. But from what I've been able to gather, actually having the RNA be in it's own membrane (an "organelle" they're calling it in the article) is not something you'd usually expect in a bacterium. If I remember correctly, they're more "soupy" inside.
Kichererbsen··on Cloudpilot, a PalmOS Emulator for the Web
I had a 2 hour train commute in 2000 - and a Palm V with a Forth (QForth?) and a copy of the SDK manual on it. Fun times! Really taught me a lot...
Kichererbsen··on PowerShell Inventor Jeffrey Snover Interview
PowerShell as a _shell_ language though is really cool. Yes, scripting large scripts can be cumbersome, but actually having a PowerShell prompt beats having a cmd.exe prompt any day hands down!

Some of the things are not... ideal. And there's a bunch of legacy stuff in modern powershell that we could do without, but a REPL scripting language with pipe semantics is really useful on a day-to-day basis.

I'm not sure C# would work as a shell language at all.

Kichererbsen··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop
this is totally expected behavior... "Me too." is local to f... what did you expect?
Kichererbsen··on ISO should make all standards Publicly Available
That's exactly the point: Any business that can afford to spend on standards doesn't want to change any of this, because it helps keep out disruptors.
Kichererbsen··on Moon’s top layer has enough oxygen to sustain 8B people for 100k years
pretty sure sooner or later you're going to have to figure out what to do with defunct colonists anyway and disassembling them is not the worst option...
Kichererbsen··on Web-based editor
was that you? i _love_ github1s. used it a few times. thank you so much!
Kichererbsen··on Twike
Just checked the website - the Twike 5 (2021) with the largest battery should be able to do 190km/h and have a range of 500km. Those are optimistic numbers for sure, but not really "too slow", right?
Kichererbsen··on Twike
There are still a few around in Zurich. They're quite expensive, though, so I guess that's why they didn't really take off. I might consider buying one for say... twice the price of a good electric bicycle.
Kichererbsen··on New ‘mirror’ fabric can cool wearers by nearly 5°C
you mean like a woolen jumper?
Kichererbsen··on Yggdrasil – Early-stage implementation of an end-to-end encrypted IPv6 network
Not only that - the distribution my dad brought home included a _book_ (remember those?) which was actually a bunch of open source books collected in one! Tons of information on Unix stuff, shells, commands etc. I learnt so much from those books. I have no idea how someone would start in this day and age... (this was so important to tell for me that I finally stopped lurking and made an account _just_ for this comment!)
