KIFulgore··on Let's guess what Google requires in 14 days or they kill our extension
I haven't written a blog about it, but it's a common experience for those building B2B integrations with Facebook. Also common is feature deprecation with replacement functionality gated (read: withheld) behind a closed beta program. They're difficult to join and often can only be entered if you commit to supporting other Facebook APIs and features (those they wish to publicize).

This is scarily reminiscent of Facebook's App Review process. We submitted 8 identical Apps that, functionally, are just webhooks for Messenger events. All required documentation, justification for the two permissions we needed, screen casts, and test login credentials were submitted for the reviewers.

3 were approved. 5 were rejected - all for different reasons.

Re-submitted the 5 with no changes; 2 more got approved. Two were rejected again. One was rejected with a firm reprimand for making an identical submission (must have hit the same reviewer).

Shuffled some words, re-recorded a couple videos - 2 more approvals, 1 rejection.

Re-submitted the last outlier without changes - Approved.

We are very weary of playing Facebook App Review whack-a-mole.

KIFulgore··on WHO launches global megatrial of the four most promising coronavirus treatments
If it's effective, I'd hope it would become widely available for future pandemics.
KIFulgore··on New MacBook Air
Only in the marketing world does "Magic" == "functional".
KIFulgore··on Programmers generate every possible melody in MIDI to prevent lawsuits
Bobby Prince certainly wouldn't get away with the original DooM soundtrack today.
KIFulgore··on Bye Bye Microsoft Office, Hello LibreOffice
I think the $99/year is well worth 5 Office installs, 1TB of storage each, and apps that sync photos and OneNote across devices.
KIFulgore··on 63 Cores Blocked by Seven Instructions
He worked for Microsoft years ago. Still an MVP all this time later.
KIFulgore··on Chemistry Nobel Goes to Lithium Battery Innovators
No kidding... the Nobel committee seems to aim for nearly-posthumous far too often.
KIFulgore··on Walmart announces next-day delivery, firing back at Amazon
WalMart.com lost me at limiting my password to 12 characters.
KIFulgore··on Baked MacBook Air: A cautionary recipe
I managed to revive a GeForce 8600M GT board using the oven method a few years ago. A much smaller board with fewer components. The bake time was only about 8 minutes though, and I pre-warmed it thoroughly to ~105C in a separate oven first.
KIFulgore··on Ask HN: How are you getting through (and back from) burning out?
I lost over 100 pounds by reducing carbs and skipping breakfast. And I hardly miss it at all.
KIFulgore··on Average 10-year-old has eaten 18 years' worth of sugar
I've read that lean, cholesterol-laden meats like shrimp, oysters, and liver do not raise cholesterol, but meats high in saturated fat will (ie, butter and ribeye steak).
KIFulgore··on SIGIL, a New Doom Campaign by John Romero
This is awesome, and I do hope he creates a new level pack for Doom II's anniversary. The new enemy types and double-barrel shotgun make Doom II a lot more interesting IMO.
KIFulgore··on A Not-Called Function Can Cause a 5X Slowdown
I was lucky enough to have a class with him at DigiPen. He's an optimization genius.
KIFulgore··on Video game crash of 1983
I wrote a short note to Steven Kent a few years ago saying I enjoyed reading his book. He was kind enough to write back and thank me for reading. The earlier editions had a different name: The First Quarter: A 25-year History of Video Games. [1]

He noted in his letter that he wouldn't have chosen such an "arrogant" title for his book as "The Ultimate History", and the decision was the publisher's. Seemed like a thoughtful and humble person.

KIFulgore··on Coffee sold in California must carry cancer warning, judge rules
As non-residents of California, we're happy to hear that residents view these warnings the same way the rest of us do. It seems that _everything_ causes cancer in California.
KIFulgore··on Automattic is closing its San Francisco office as most employees work remotely
Judging just from the photo, I'd work from home too if my workspace was a warehouse with a bunch of picnic tables.
KIFulgore··on Computer Science Education
I see SNES buttons...
KIFulgore··on Paper is the real 'killer app'
I recently re-subscribed to a real-life, old-fashioned newspaper. I like the digital edition, but prefer the paper version. The resolution is amazing and you can't beat the loading times, and I never run into browser incompatibility issues. There are still too many ads, but they don't pop up and dance.
KIFulgore··on The Proposal of the Neutrino (1930)
I thought the HN headline was incorrect until I read Pauli was looking for a particle of ~0.01 proton mass (neutrons and protons are about the same mass).
