Justsignedup··on No car company has taken up Tesla's offer to license FSD
To add, if the company itself is risky, with wild outlandish statements by the CEO, other companies might say "well, he can gamble all he wants, but I cannot take this risk and help him at his gambles."

Maybe 10 years ago people would be willing to invest into musk, but after twitter people see his ability to truly lead / innovate as "companies may be succeeding despite him, not due to him".

So the reality is, it is all about risk. Tesla's tech may be hypothetically amazing, but Musk's history shows that he fakes the funk a lot, and nobody is willing to take the risk that he might be again.

Edit: Don't forget the golden rule of software dependency: If an API or Library you use fails, no client is going to look at it and say "yeah, its okay, this other company fucked up". No. You fucked up. And now "Ford self driving is a nightmare". And the next headline would be "Musk says Ford implemented FSD incorrectly". They will not accept that sort of risk.

Justsignedup··on Hiring ONLY seniors is the worst policy in the software industry
Yeah came here to say that. I've never been part of a highly senior team. The BEST i've seen is a 1 sr to 2 jr ratio. And I've seen engs who have like 2 years of experience, clearly upper jr but talented, get sr titles.
Justsignedup··on The end of "Useless Ruby sugar": On intuitions and evolutions
My only hot take on syntactic sugar is this observation:

If it is less characters to type out, and has a very specific intended purpose, there will always be an engineer on your team who tries to use it just one more time because they were lazy and didn't want to type the extra 5 characters, and then one more time, and then one more time, and then you're debugging code that is unreadable.

This is not an argument for/against any specific syntactic sugars, this is just an observation that I've seen.

Justsignedup··on Enthusiasts struggle to keep model railway industry on track
I played Satisfactory and Factorio. Plenty of fun to be had with trains in those games. Definitely scratched that itch, and I didn't need to buy a bunch of expensive physical pieces.
Justsignedup··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
just because they were combining chemicals to try to make an insecticide doesn't mean the chemical in and of itself is bad.

However between the mass microplastics and a lot of recent food additive additions, and mass sugar, im sure there's something interesting going on.

ALSO could be literally resiedue from pesticides used during farming.

So lots of weirdness, tl;dr we need to invest a fuckton of money into research to find out the actual answer.

Justsignedup··on Startup Founders Fret over Getting Fired Like Sam Altman
SpaceX is a great example too. Literally the world is throwing so much money at the problem, and they're still a decade behind at least. Waymo is another example, remember when Uber tried to get into self-driving? Very few heavily capitalized players can even attempt to try to catch up to these guys in a decade.
Justsignedup··on Driverless cars swerve traffic tickets in California even if they break the law
this will get quickly shut down once people start transporting explosives to politician's houses
Justsignedup··on Driverless cars swerve traffic tickets in California even if they break the law
Ah but you can't rely on which car gets to where. So the best you can hope for is a to B. Which means both ends are recorded. And likely waymo will look for baggage only trips and report them. Those are trivial to detect with pressure sensors.
Justsignedup··on Driverless cars swerve traffic tickets in California even if they break the law
Also likely because instead of some schmuck they now have to extract cash from a corporation. Which isn't profitable.
Justsignedup··on Ideal monitor rotation for programmers (2021)
I love this. It reminds me of the two vs 4 spaces. And some dude will inevitably say 3 spaces fuck you. My point is... We need this in the office so that every time I turn on video chat I have to explain why I'm slanted.
Justsignedup··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
Ah got it, so your solution is to uproot my entire family to optimize for this one issue. Damage is already done. Plus where would I go? Who would take an old man like myself who won't be an ROI on taxes paid before retirement?
Justsignedup··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
oh absolutely not. he was like 80, retired, and refused to stop driving. Hit my pregnant mom.

Another one, suspended license, got drunk, and decided to play pinball with the car my fiance was in, causing lifelong injuries.

You can't get away from those. America is just a fun place.

Justsignedup··on The right to use adblockers
Unfortunately devs don't get a vote, we're just too much of a minority. Remember IE6? It took google literally firing all guns to de-throne it, and they did it because they injected a message with every google search to use chrome.

Unfortunately... i don't know what we can do, even if the entire dev community gives google the finger.

Justsignedup··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
an average of 44 per day in the US. So... common, but relatively, uncommon. And apparently there is software that can help mitigate this.

> I don't think most of us would automatically want to share the roads with a bunch of mentally ill drivers, even if, statistically, they were better than neurotypical drivers.

I'm not scared of mentally ill drivers. I'm scared of rich 16 year olds. I'm scared of drunk drivers. I'm scared of drivers sitting so low they can't see most of what is happening around them. I'm scared of drivers having seizures while driving (my mom was hit a while ago by a man who lost his license due to seizures, and still refused to stop driving). I'm scared of drivers who drive without a license because "fuck them, I drive when I want to". I'm scared of people mixing up gas and break pedals (just got hit by one), in cars which can go 0-60 in 2.6 seconds weighing 6000lbs.

Justsignedup··on How Cars Turned Into Giant Killers
I think they did the right thing with CAFE but they forgot one critical aspect. Licenses. In order to qualify for the lower emission standards, your car must have commercial plates with appropriate commercial license requirements.

This will solve all problems immediately. Work trucks can effectively be affected independently from residential trucks.

(I also think the 0-60 of a car should require specialized licenses. Like anything under 8 seconds should require a license that a rich 16yo can't just get just because)

In any case, thats my thoughts.

Justsignedup··on Volkswagen Will Bring Back Physical Buttons in New Cars
Buttons are great. But also critical is software. On my old prius there was one knob for temperature, and you push it sideways to change temp, intensity, mode, etc, and that sucks during driving.

I am very happy my Mazda has dedicated single-function physical buttons, and it'll automatically switch to the mode you're thinking of when you press a button.

The tablet control via physical button is amazing compared to touch screen, takes a minute to get used to, but far far far far far far far less distracting when driving than a touchscreen.

Justsignedup··on Discord is down
Are they actually profitable? I thought their big challenge was getting in on the Slack market, because kids are great but they don't really pay.
Justsignedup··on FCC votes to ban termination fees for cable and satellite services
This will allow free market mechanics to kick in for competitors. Once nyc got more than 1 option at houses prices dropped.
Justsignedup··on Beeper Mini is back
its more than a shame. emoji, gifs and images are a core part of teens' communications (I have one, I know all too well), and iMessage's green bubble is also a guarantee that these things won't work, so its not just a shame, it is a hard road block.

Fortunately a lot of teens moved to discord.

Justsignedup··on Want Less Traffic and More Parking? Start Charging for It
Most rides we'd take in NYC would cost at least 40-60 a ride. That gets blown really quickly when you visit family every other week, and have to take a kid to sports practices a couple of times a week.
Justsignedup··on Want Less Traffic and More Parking? Start Charging for It
The reality is that were very far from this infrastructure being practically anywhere but nyc.

Now I agree we need to do something but it'll just end up being an extra tax that will affect the poor more than others. If we don't tax everyone than it defeats the purpose of using taxes to drive behaviors. So we can't subsidize because that defeats the goal.

Justsignedup··on Carmakers Plan to Make Basic Features Subscription, Despite Widespread Backlash
The united states is designed to be driven. It was very intentional. In NYC, depending on where you live you don't need a car, but once you get to the outskirts of the boroughs (like outer queens, outer brooklyn, any of staten island that isn't right by the ferry, upper bronx) you basically drive or getting anywhere to anywhere can take hours. And NYC is the best in the country regarding not needing a car.

Many places "going to the corner store" is a 20 minute drive. I still remember going up to long island to visit a friend, and we wanted to eat. The absolutely closest place to get food was a 45 minute walk each direction.

Justsignedup··on DoorDash raises minimum pay to $29.93 per hour in NYC
so my understanding is: don't tip on doordash after this. This means that the actual cost will be included in the work. I'm all for it. I hate tips, it is arbitrary and terrible.
Justsignedup··on Anduril Builds a Tiny, Reusable Fighter Jet That Blows Up Drones
This is true.
Justsignedup··on Anduril Builds a Tiny, Reusable Fighter Jet That Blows Up Drones
Even if it is extremely effective. This thing would need to blow up between 500 - 2000 drones (depending on drone cost, which is going down) to make itself worth the expense. Meanwhile such a vehicle might be something that can be shot down with some AA fire.

Also no areal vehicle can go on say 500 missions without maintenance, that price is going to only go up.

I cannot fathom the cost justification.

Justsignedup··on Hyundai Uni Wheel electric drive system could revolutionize EV design
can this not use a single center motor with a shaft, just replacing the current structures? It won't be that big savings as it is in electric vehicles, but it could reduce some complexity and unify architecture of electric and ICE?
Justsignedup··on Hyundai Uni Wheel electric drive system could revolutionize EV design
A question to someone who understands the physics involved here... Does this benefit ICE cars as well? Is this a generally good tech that reduces weight / space / cost for cars in general?
Justsignedup··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
if i lived alone, sure, but moving away from my family, away from my friends, away from my partner's friends, away from my child's friends, basically starting a completely new life... it isn't something we'd be looking for. All while facing the fact that many parts of the country (USA) isn't very friendly for women, or for non-white people, and having to be in a position where I can still find good work.

"Just move" has been a very challenging outlook for me to combat :(

Justsignedup··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
this is true. Being 39 I realized I still can't pay down that down payment because I don't have a vast amount of money I was able to save up, being in a HCOL area, and even if I do get a loan, I won't be able to pay it off before I retire (If I live long enough). And every time I save another chunk, the cost goes up so much more that the chunk I saved may as well have been zero, so I need to use that money to live by this point. Not to mention that mortgage gets more and more unaffordable.

It is a horrible spiral, and I have no idea what I can do about it, other than get richer parents.
