Juha··on Ask HN: Best book / resources on leadership, especially for tech teams?
Recently I have been relying on two good sources for leadership:

- Book: The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker: I think this is an excellent book to teach the part of the brain that wants to execute to think more strategically and concentrate on the leadership side.

- Podcast: Modern CTO: This podcast has lots of interviews CTO's from all kinds of companies. It's pretty casual and entertaining but also seems to always motivate me to be a better leader.

Juha··on Google suspends some business with Huawei
One thing to note is that the whole Chinese Android ecosystem currently works without those Google services or Play Store. It's still challenging to push system without Google globally, but at least they have experience with that locally in China.
Juha··on In Urban China, Cash Is Rapidly Becoming Obsolete
> And what about privacy? Obviously everything you buy is being fed into a big government database somewhere. Do people in China not care about that (has privacy been eroded so much)?

I don't see how it's different from using credit cards or any other digital payment method.

Juha··on NPM has been partially down for a while now
They are still down (7+ hours after creating that ticket), with zero communication from NPM and status page showing all green. Not the way to go.

EDIT: They finally pushed an update to status page: http://status.npmjs.org/

Juha··on Tencent Buys ‘Clash of Clans’ Developer Supercell for $8.6B
Here is Supercell's official announcement: http://supercell.com/en/nextchapter/

Snippet form the post:

> First, we have agreed with Tencent that Supercell will continue to be operationally independent, exactly as it was under SoftBank's ownership...

I hope they manage to keep their own way of running the company.

Juha··on President of Finland writes code with 4-9 year old children
The president was interviewed after the event asking him: "How much can you do with programming?" He answered: "I just learned basics...I can make a circle!". Everybode's gotta start somewhere :).
Juha··on Devd: a small, self-contained web daemon for developers
Just what I need, even has the folder-index view that I need. Python SimpleHTTPServer has been getting stuck sometimes for me lately when used through Chrome. Maybe the way it loads resources in parallel changed or something.
Juha··on Functional Programming in Python [pdf]
For anyone wanting a quick intro to fp in Python I stumbled into this awesome presentation (50 slides) about Functional Programming in Python. I especially like his short but clear examples: http://kachayev.github.io/talks/uapycon2012/#/ . Good intro before getting deeper into the linked book.
Juha··on Google has quietly launched a GitHub competitor
A while ago I remember hearing in some podcast from googler that they internally have separate source code management system (not related to Google Code). I wouldn't be surprised it he was talking about this one and they finally decided to make it public. Killing Google Code was probably just because not many people used it (externally or internally).
Juha··on Nokia Agrees to Buy Alcatel-Lucent for $16.6B
Nokia Networks has been very separate venture from the better known Nokia-mobile. It was previously a joint venture between Nokia and Siemens known as NSN (Nokia Siemens Networks). In 2013 Nokia bought rest of the stock from Siemens and renamed it Nokia Networks.
Juha··on RapidShare is Shutting down
I think it was never very optimal to share roms through megaupload, but it seemed to be the easiest option. I'm happy to see more rom devs starting to use the needrom.com. They have rom hosting as well as commenting/rating system, it's not perfect but at least they have lots of android roms available.
Juha··on Be your own VPN provider with OpenBSD
I have been using Chrome/FF extension called FoxyProxy, it tunnels the DNS requests through the SOCKS proxy.
Juha··on Rovio lays off 110 people as Angry Birds hype fades
At least some ex-rovio people went to another Finnish game company called Seriously: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-06-30-seriously-h...
Juha··on Rovio lays off 110 people as Angry Birds hype fades
In Finland it isn't that easy to fire people one by one from permanent positions when it's not related to employee's performance. Company can offer good exit packages to ask people to leave (x months of salary), I believe this is what Nokia did at some point. In general it's normal to do big layoff rounds that involve proper announcements and negotiations between company and employee-representatives.
Juha··on China bans use of Windows 8 on government computers
I do agree that China might want to do that but how does not upgrading to Windows 8 help grow their internal sw ecology?
Juha··on Voynich Manuscript partially decoded, text is not a hoax, scholar finds
The video offers very interesting view on how he approaches the problem and proceeds to solve the problem. From scientific point of view it just seems like guesswork, but as video goes further it's clear he has a real methodology to it. I was also very impressed how he all the time seemed very objective and used words like "probably", "could" and "possibly" to communicate that his findings still need further review.
Juha··on IMDB Top 100K Movies – Analysis in Depth, Part 1
> Therefore, it may be safe to assume this ranking more or less holds true for non-top 250 movies as well.

This may not hold true. A while ago I was looking into it and they seemed to use more complex weighed average without exact details (possibly using internal user scoring). This may affect the final rating in many ways. More detailed analysis here: http://www.quora.com/Movies/What-algorithm-does-IMDB-use-for...

Juha··on UrtheCast’s Ultra HD video camera installed on the ISS [video]
It's surprisingly interesting seeing the astronauts working from first person view and hearing their communication. Reminds me a lot of the beginning scenes of Gravity, goes to show how well that movie was shot.

They mentioned they are now about 30 minutes into a 6 hour space walk.

Juha··on The Adulteration of Italian Olive Oil
I too enjoyed the nice storytelling and graphics. And knowing it's only about 10 pages helped to start following it. But being used to more information I felt like "Is that it" in the end. Could work better with linked in-depth article in the end.
Juha··on Nokia posts disappointing Lumia sales
I'll have to disagree with you on the design aspect. In my opinion Nokia N9 has been the nicest looking and feeling phone ever. When you have it in your hand the finishing feels great, especially the subtly curved screen that has deep enough blacks that blend into the black borders seamlessly.

Juha··on Learning Ruby for Children
The project seems interesting. It actually doesn't try to teach Ruby, instead it explains very simple programming concepts for very young kids.
Juha··on Navy sailors have radiation sickness after Japan rescue
Related post from NBC (27th of Dec 2012): US sailors sue Japan's TEPCO for post-quake radiation exposure (http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/27/16197507-us-sa...). Interesting they used almost the same photo on the article.
Juha··on Introducing Moto G: An Exceptional Phone At An Exceptional Price
There are phones with similar specs on that price range in Asia. I got a Lenovo A820 about half a year ago from China for around 140$ (http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-A820-Android-core1-2GHz-Smartph...). It has very similar specs with 4.5" screen and 1.2Ghz quad-core. I think it all depends on how hood build quality Motorola manages to achieve.
Juha··on Why does the alarm clock snooze button give you nine extra minutes, not ten?
How about this for a reason: One of the first big snooze clock manufacturers choose 9 minutes for some random reason and the rest followed thinking: "There must be a reason they choose 9 minutes, it sounds specific. Lets have our snooze be 9 minutes too."

I was expecting find some some highly researched psychological quirk to be the reason in the post. I guess reality is just more random and coincidental. Reminds me of the way QWERTY came to be the standard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#History_and_purposes).

Juha··on ZooKeeper vs. Doozer vs. Etcd
Thank's, didn't know that. Yep, Youtube definitely counts as a big player. Added you to the list.
Juha··on ZooKeeper vs. Doozer vs. Etcd
That's interesting use of dns indeed.

They also mention the DNS for service discovery approach starts to reach it's limits and Spotify is considering Zookeeper (quote):

We have not yet (as of January 2013) started implementing a replacement. We are
looking into using Zookeeper as an authoritative source for a static and dynamic
service registry, likely with a DNS facade.
Juha··on ZooKeeper vs. Doozer vs. Etcd
I agree. It's a pity Doozer got to this point. I was happy to see that still this years Febrary proactive developers in the google groups (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/doozer/fVcS0y3KuHQ) tried to get the project active and coordinated, but I guess merging different codebases from different forks was too big of a challenge.
Juha··on In China, an Empire Built by Aping Apple
Yes, I agree that nobody would mistake Xiaomi for an iPhone so it's hard to call it a clone. They have clear logo, different button positions and the back looks totally different. It didn't seem like the author had actually used a Xiaomi phone himself.
Juha··on In China, an Empire Built by Aping Apple
"Skeptics say the company produces low-price iPhone imitations with no significant software or hardware advantages."

I must say that compared to other low-price phones in china like Lenovo, ZTE, Huawei and Hisense I'd rather take Xiaomi. They seem to pay more attention to quality than others and they do show innovativeness with MIUI for example. And more importantly they seem to have more and more of their own innovation in each product generation. For example their MI2S offers exchangeable colored backs that I haven't seen with many other companies (Nokia maybe).

I used to think NYT is respectable paper, but with words like "aping" in the title of an article like this I'm giving up on that thought.
