Juha··on Bradley Manning’s Statement
That's surprisingly interesting to read (at least the start), lots of raw information. One fun thing I noticed, he's using sed-syntax to correct his spelling mistakes. Is that normal or is he true hacker? For example he writes "s/Hilary/Hillary".

Good hint on how safe/unsafe RSA actually is: "bradass87: 2048… never heard of it being broken publicly… NSA can feasibly do it, if they want to allocate national level “number-crunching” time to do it…"

Juha··on Ed McMillen: Ubuntu Store Sold Super Meat Boy Without Permission, Has Yet To Pay
It seems they just wanted some exposure on what Canonical did (aka media justice). They weren't going to sue them or go after them in other ways.

Quote from Ed (http://www.formspring.me/EdmundM/q/406960226210700795): "its not a huge deal, i just dont like being made to look like an asshole so i made my reasons public."

Juha··on Taobao.com breaks record for online sales in a day - $3.1 billion USD
One thing I learned from China while being in there: You can get goods of any quality there. The cheap stuff is what most westeners buy, and it is mostly not so good quality. But if you are willing to pay proper prices, you can get quality products.

And there are exceptions on the cheap stuff too, for example I just bought an Aoson M11 Android tablet for 125€ from there and the overall quality seems very good.

Juha··on Ten Finger Touch Screen Keyboard
I think its very good that they kept the resemblance to QWERTY, even if it sacrifices small amount of speed. Steep learning curve is the biggest problem with these and if keeping the QWERTY compatibility helps I'm all for it. At least for me it seemed easier to learn because of it.
Juha··on Drake equation: How many alien civilizations exist? (interactive chart)
In my these are the only numbers that matter: "% change a habitable planet develops life" and "% chance change that life develops intelligence". Those are the most uncertain, and cause most difference in the result. Also, it's a bit unrealistic that smallest number you can choose is 1%, I doubt 1 in 100 earth-like planets will develop life.
Juha··on City of Helsinki Wants To Keep Software Costs Secret
They say that their 21000 pc pilot project with LibreOffice shows that using LibreOffice over their proprietary office tools increases the cost by 70%. This seems very difficult to believe without proper arguments.
Juha··on 1 in 3 Facebook users spending less time on the site
Curious choice of title since it doesn't really tell if Facebook is doing better or worse (although the tone hints worse). It could as well mean 70% of users are using it more.

From the article we see that the actual results are: - 34% use FB less than year ago - 20% use FB more than year ago - around 50% use as much as before

Juha··on Chromebox
There is a second version (XE300M22-A02US) with Core i5 processor and 499$ pricetag: http://www.chromestory.com/2012/05/two-chromeboxes-second-49...
Juha··on Chromebox
I agree, it doesn't even mention that it runs Chrome OS or offer links to more information about its operating system. Not all people even know that there is such thing as Chrome OS, or what it can do.
Juha··on Zeros in JavaScript
I wish I went through a page like this when I started JS. It might be useful to try to make some of the more illogical ones in bold, like NaN==NaN=false or [0]==0=true but [0]==[0]==false.

Also at least first and second table seem to be symmetric. To help visual parsing half of them could be hidden.

Juha··on Google's Code Editor
They just need a Git integration with syntax highlighting for other languages and this might actually be useful. Although there are many web-IDEs simple tool like this would still be useful.
Juha··on Plagiarism
"It's good to see an apology."

After reading the response I feel he was avoiding giving a proper apology. Only thing he apologizes is that he didn't have all the information at first, which is a kind of non-apology.

Juha··on Finland makes 1Mb broadband access a legal right (2009)
I think defining broadband access like this allows them to move certain legally required things to the internet age. I believe there are a lot of small laws in Finland that say what the radio channel, newspaper or Tv channel should provide. For example we actually have a law that during icehockey World Championships our own matches should be broadcasted for free.

If enough people legally have access to a broadband internet, its easier to make laws to offering certain services through the internet (certain information delivery, services like taxes and maybe voting in the future).

Juha··on Show HN: My first web app - Resumonk - A beautifully simple resume builder
I think this is great idea. Some things I'd want to see there: Gallery of templates before signing up and possibility to manually edit the templates. Seeing a list of features might also help getting people to sign up.
Juha··on 170+ Django conference videos
This is great site to keep in mind, I added a link to the blog post. Language filtering feature would be nice, the Django section seemed to have many French ones on the first page.
Juha··on Who here believes the universe is a computer simulation?
"if we are in a simulation, we could possibly hack our way out of it."

Interesting, software engineers know there are no programs without bugs. Some weirdest things in physics like quantum entanglement may just be bugs in the simulation :)

Juha··on 170+ Django conference videos
I did watch the session a while ago and now remember it wasn't too successful, but I selected it there because I think security is important and did have good points in there. Many books, articles and presentations tend to leave the security part out of their scope. I did push the security session down the list :).
Juha··on 170+ Django conference videos
I did miss that they have so many Django videos. I added a link on the others section. They seem to be missing the DjangoCon Europe videos as mentioned.
Juha··on 3 useful features from Opera Dev tools that Chrome is missing
This is sadly true. They don't work on Pocket either. I really like the clean style of their dynamic views, but apparently they should not be used yet. Some of the dynamic views also have problems displaying on mobile browsers. I should change back to a normal template as soon as I find a good one.
Juha··on Skype IP Lookup
That's scary if they really show the local IP. It becomes quite handy tool for hackers. If they have breached any computer in a company network and want to target the CEO's computer next they can just use Skype to get his IP.
Juha··on The Anatomy Of Search Technology: Blekko’s NoSQL Database
Very good article in deed. I have always been amazed of how the search engines can query so huge data sets so quickly. This brings some light to it.

It would had been nice to see some examples of the query language they use, it if is comparable to other NoSql databases.

Juha··on Introducing Google Drive... yes, really
I remember some Googlers talking about web intents last year which sounds a bit similar concept, but I guess this is something separate form that one.

They were writing about it in context of Chrome: http://blog.chromium.org/2011/08/connecting-web-apps-with-we...

Juha··on The Pwn Plug is a little white box that can hack your network
It's interesting that the article never mentions that to use that he had to find a power plug with a free ethernet plug next to it. That might not be trivial in all environments. It gets a lot more suspicious if he has to search for that for a long time in the bank. Also someone might question the why the ethernet cable is there at some point. Just saying the article makes it sound easier it actually is for a non technical person.
Juha··on Ask HN: why QR reading capability isn't integrated to smartphones
QR's benefit is that it is so low tech, so it will have usecases even after something else comes around (print media for example). Btw, I have been under impression that the NFC technology is coming as the next step, haven't heard about low-power BT.
Juha··on Chrome addons hacking: Bye Bye AdBlock filters
I have seen a few that won't work unless I disable adblock but haven't stumbled on any that ask but still work with it. I doubt many would disable it if they don't have to. Do you have an example?
Juha··on Nokia Unveils Symbian 41 Megapixel Camera Phone
"The phone uses a technique that Nokia calls over-sampling, to produce crystal clear, noiseless images with an effective resolution of 5 megapixels." At first this sentence made me think it might be just a marketing trick, but seeing the sensor size I see there might be something truly innovative here.

I first thought the sensor size must be a mistake, 1/1.2" huge, it is larger than any point&shoot camera (biggest ones are 1/1.5" like Canon G1-X) and its area is ~60% of normal DSLR sensor area. But still the 41MP sounds huge, it remains to be seen how much that MP count affects the actual image resolution. Maybe Nokia should just start making P&S cameras if it's really that good.

Juha··on Documentary proving Earth is flat
The documentary was funny but also interesting to learn and remind about the methods that documentaries use to make audience believe what they are saying. It uses many similar methods that can be seen in modern documentaries too: scientist verification, undermining the opposing sides research data, being against status quo and introducing relatable humble normal person trying to prove the view (and suffering doing that).

It was fun to notice that although I knew it was wrong, some part of me wanted to believe it :).

Juha··on World Clicking Championship TheElevatorGame.com (and experiment)
Yes, it seems to be A/B (or maybe multivariant) testing. Tried the site through hidemyass.com and got the numbers running in bottom-top order while loading it directly I got top-bottom order. I hope the creator will publish the results when finished :).
Juha··on Wikipedia not actually blacking out its pages
You seem to be right, I only checked the main-page and Finnish pages and they were open, so I thought all of them were.

I'm sure there will be many non-US people wondering why their page is blocked just because there is some upcoming law in the US. Its not like they can pick up the phone and call their representative to affect the matter in any way.

Juha··on Wikipedia not actually blacking out its pages
Considering that the point of the blackout is to raise attention, hiding is already enough. Anyone who gets to the content will be aware of the SOPA this way. I guess anyone can just use non-US proxy to get to the content anyway.
