Jugglerofworlds··on A bone-marrow transplant treated a patient’s leukemia – and his schizophrenia
I've long suspected that my depression & OCD were caused by some immune response. It all started very suddenly when I had a very bad illness. Unfortunately I have yet to find a doctor that believes me and is willing to do anything other than giving me the standard medications.
Jugglerofworlds··on Military robots are getting smaller and more capable
What about defensive measures? Can these things be taken out with electromagnetic interference or a net? Maybe some sort of autonomous laser turret to melt the propellers of the drones?

I'm hoping that once self driving cars become common, we can remove parking spaces and replace them with protected bike lanes. A while back I bought an electric bike to ride around Boston, but I quickly returned it because I didn't want to end up as a splatter on the side of the road. Self-driving cars can't come soon enough.

Sometimes discrete graph theory problems can be relaxed into a continuous space where gradient descent can be used. If you want a concrete example of how this happens, take a look at the "Continuous Optimization" section in the "Thirty Years of Graph Matching in Pattern Recognition" paper (graph/subgraph isomorphism).

You should check out parser combinators. I've also used parser generators in the past and experienced similar frustrations. Parser combinators are just so much easier to use.
Jugglerofworlds··on At urging of Minneapolis police, EMS workers subdued dozens with ketamine
I've had ketamine infusions for depression. At the ketamine clinics, the drug is administered by an anesthesiologist, and insurance does not cover the cost since the drug is not FDA approved for depression.

Marijuana can actually trigger anxiety disorders in some people. The fourth time I tried marijuana it kindled a panic attack which led to OCD. My life was completely ruined for three years, and I still haven't fully recovered to how I was before.

I hate when people act like weed has zero risks and tout it as the cure for anxiety. Based on my experiences with several different psychiatrists and therapists, it seems that anxiety problems caused by marijuana are fairly common in the patients that they see.

Edit: if you actually want something safe to treat flight anxiety, ask your doctor about a medium acting benzo or a beta blocker. These medications have been well studied by the medical community, and pharmacies ensure that you will receive the exact dosing required. This self medication stuff is complete crap.

Jugglerofworlds··on Origins of the myth of dopamine as the ‘pleasure chemical’
I currently take naltrexone with buprenorphine for my depression. I highly recommend checking out low dose naltrexone, which is usually defined as a dose less than 5 mg. There has been a large surgre of interest in LDN on /r/nootropics and /r/depressionregimens in the past six months. Most people are trying it either for autoimmune diseases or to reverse opiate tolerance. The typical starting doses for LDN are around 1 mg

Before anyone says that I'm just getting high, you should know that I've been on 20+ different antidepressant treatments and none of them worked. That includes ketamine and rTMS. So it was a medication of last resort. My other options were basically electro convulsive therapy or deep brain stimulation.

There is an experimental antidepressant called ALKS 5461 that is composed of buprenorphine and samidorphan. The company who makes it (Alkermes) recently submitted a new drug request to the FDA, but it was denied because the FDA wants more studies on how ALKS 5461 compared to buprenorphine. Samidorphan has a similar method of action to naltrexone, and the dose of samidorphan is 2 mg, combined with 2 mg of buprenorphine. If the FDA would have approved it, it would have been released in 2019.

Jugglerofworlds··on Atomontage: voxel 3D simulation technology for games
There are now algorithms for screen space reflections and screen space shadows, so perhaps that is what they are using.
Jugglerofworlds··on Atomontage: voxel 3D simulation technology for games
Yup, all that lighting in the video is baked. If you look at some of their other videos where they start destroying models, you can tell that it's baked because the shadows don't change. Modern video games still heavily use baked lighting, but anything that moves need to have dynamic shadows.
Jugglerofworlds··on Atomontage: voxel 3D simulation technology for games
Atomontage has been around for many years now without any release. The two Achilles heels of finely detailed voxel engines have historically been animation and lighting. Based on the video, it looks like they have animation now but the lighting doesn't seem to be any better.

All of the shading that I've seen in past Atomontage videos has been screen space ambient occlusion, which is a great effect but is no substitute for real lighting with dynamic shadows. I've also seen them use AO baked directly into the voxel models.

I just wish that they would actually release something instead of posting countless tech demo videos. If the technology is so great, why aren't they trying to put it in the hands of real game developers right now? The whole thing smells of vaporware...

Jugglerofworlds··on Godot at GDC 2018
Do you use any external C# dlls? I use NewtonSoft's Json.NET, MessagePack, ShaderForge and a few C/C++ dlls. I think it should be pretty straightforward for simple projects without any of these dependencies. I've had good luck with upgrading to newer versions of Unity in the past, but this time I got a ton of errors.
Jugglerofworlds··on Godot at GDC 2018
I just tried to upgrade my project to 4.6 in Unity a few hours ago (using the 2018.1 beta). I ended up having to switch back because of build errors. For anyone who is interested in upgrading to 4.6: I suggest waiting until later in the 2018 release cycle so that all the kinks can be worked out.
Jugglerofworlds··on Autism's social deficits in animal model are reversed by an anti-cancer drug
HDAC inhibitors have been discussed before on /r/nootropics and Longecity. I was part of a group buy for Vorinostat, which is a medication with a similar mechanism of action. I only took it once and had a positive experience where I felt very "child-like", in the way that the world seemed vivid and exciting. I haven't taken it since due to concerns about interactions with some of my other medications.

The primary goal of many of the people in the group buy were fear extinction and memory enhancement. I haven't seen much discussion on it since the initial excitement.

Jugglerofworlds··on Comparative efficacy and acceptability of 21 antidepressant drugs
For the more severe anxiety disorders, the proof of efficacy above placebo is much better than what we have for depression. People don't get better by taking placebos for their OCD. For anyone experiencing anxiety problems, I highly recommend finding a competent therapist who knows CBT. For anxiety that constantly interferes with daily life, medication may be appropriate.

For me the SSRIs completely wiped out my OCD to the point where I sometimes forget that I have problems with anxiety. Depression is downright benign compared to how bad the situation can get with other psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately the demand for competent medical professionals far outstrips what is available.

I do agree that SSRIs are over-prescribed for minor depression problems, but let's not demonize a whole class of medications which are highly useful for more serious psychiatric issues.

Jugglerofworlds··on Ketamine blocks bursting in the lateral habenula to rapidly relieve depression
I've had Ketamine infusions for treatment resistant depression, and it did nothing for me. After failing a large range of antidepressants, my doctor prescribed buprenorphine (usually used for getting off of opiates). The buprenorphine has helped far more than any of the other medications I've been on, but now I have problems with nausea.
