Jugglerofworlds··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
I follow the UFO community, that stuff is still going on. The military man, David Grusch was recently on the Joe Rogan podcast where he talked about steps moving forward.

The next big thing coming down the pipeline is ensuring that "The UAP Disclosure Act of 2023" proposed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer passes the house. Yes this is the real name of the act, and has already passed through the Senate as part of the NDAA. The opposition in the House is coming from members from districts with entrenched military/military contracting interests.

Jugglerofworlds··on Grad student unions strike deal with University of California
I'm a PhD student at a top CS research University, and I'm leaving with a master's degree. I agree that the bar for admission into the program is way too high. I only got into two Universities despite having multiple publications as well as experience working in government research labs.

The majority of my fellow students are international, mostly from China. I know hardly any other Americans in my program. At this point I see the system as more or less a way for international students to gain citizenship. I'm all for immigration, but I think it has gotten to the point where American students don't even want to go to graduate school at their own Universities, and the system imports foreign students who they know they can abuse for cheap labor. If grad student salaries were higher I'm sure we would see more Americans joining.

I decided to leave due to abuse by my initial advisor. So many of my fellow students have experienced abuse or neglect by their advisors. By neglect I mean that advisors won't even talk to them because the advisor has tenure and doesn't care. Many CS doctorate holders I've talked to have expressed that their degree was not worth it.

Jugglerofworlds··on The Coming Game Engine Inflection Point
I've used Unity since around 2014 or so, for personal projects and also at work for a VR startup. The primary problem with Unity is: 1. The editor has become so slow and buggy, to the point where it is unusable, 2. Features are half-baked, like the new ECS which has failed to replace the old user scripts, lack of a networking solution despite years of development time, etc. My relatively small personal project causes the latest Unity versions to constantly freeze with loading bars that never complete. I think that peak Unity was 2019 or so, all versions since then have been worse.

With the ironSource acquisition complete, I don't think things will turn around. Unity didn't have a cashcow like Epic, so some sort of acquisition was pretty much inevitable. The profits from Unity licenses and the Unity asset store just isn't high enough to sustain development.

Jugglerofworlds··on Adults who microdose psychedelics report lower levels of depression and anxiety [pdf]
This happened to me, but with a high dose of marijuana. It was maybe maybe 3rd time I ever tried it. There is a confirmed connection between marijuana use and psychosis in those genetically susceptible. Hang around any schizophrenia forum long enough and you'll see plenty of stories from people who obtained their mental health problems from drug use.
Jugglerofworlds··on Welcome Polygenically Screened Babies
As someone with schizophrenia I am disappointed to read all the negative comments, probably coming from people who don't have to bear this horrible disease. I've already decided that the only way I'll ever have kids is through some sort of genetic screening process. I know many other people with schizophrenia online who also purposely will never have kids because they don't want to pass the disorder down.

In my case it's definitely genetic. I've taken 23andme, run my data through Promethease and I have a ton of genes that put me at high risk of the disorder.

I don't give a shit about your high IQ designer baby, just at least give me the option of having a kid before all the pearl clutchers take it away.

Jugglerofworlds··on Expanding our testing in San Francisco
Presumably because the cars would be substantially more expensive than an ordinary car due to all the high tech packed into them. Assuming that the components of the car have a finite lifetime, it might be possible that the overall cost is so much significantly more than a normal car that they won't be able to compete with a human driven solution like Uber.

Does anyone have any actual statistics/calculations on this sort of thing?

Jugglerofworlds··on Delivery Drones Physically Impractical
This is why I'm anticipating a vehicle/drone delivery system hybrid. Essentially an Amazon van will drive around, and the drones will fly off from the moving vehicle to deliver packages. Meanwhile, the driver starts and stops the vehicle as is typical right now to deliver the heavier packages.
Jugglerofworlds··on Resume review process created by former Googlers while they were at Twitter

Jugglerofworlds··on The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds in the US are now living with their parents
I think that people ignore the fact that the population of the United States has dramatically increased over time. We now have 331 million people whereas there were only 210 million in 1970. So of course housing is going to be more expensive. The issue gets even more dramatic prior to 1900.
Jugglerofworlds··on Do I need to go to university?
I don't think Khan Academy or 3brown1blue are a replacement for upper level math and physics courses. Khan seems to stop at calculus/statistics and not dive into any of the proof based math. I'm not sure on 3brown1blue since I haven't watched very much of him.
Jugglerofworlds··on Symbolic mathematics finally yields to neural networks
I'm planning on applying for PhD programs this fall to work in this area. There are only a few places in the world right now that I know of working on these types of problems. They are:

* Martin Vechev, ETH Zurich

* Dawn Song, University of California Berkeley

* Eran Yahav, Technion

* Miltiadis Allamanis, Microsoft Research Cambridge

If anyone knows other advisors looking for graduate students in this area, please let me know. Due to personal circumstances I can most likely not apply to ETH Zurich or Technion (I don't speak Hebrew anyway), which leaves me with only one potential advisor in a program that I really want.

There is also the Python writing model that Open AI showed recently at the Microsoft Build conference, so maybe there is some interest growing at other places as well.

I was also recently working on a deep learning decompiler but was unable to get my transformer model to learn well enough to actually decompile x64 assembly. I have the source code for the entire Linux kernel as training data, so it's not an issue with quantity. If anyone is interested in helping out with this project, please let me know in a comment.

Jugglerofworlds··on Ask HN: Where to get (free) trading data?
I went down this path about a month ago. Don't expect to find any good quality data on stocks for free. If you do need data on stocks I recommend IEX, but expect to pay a good amount of money for any sizable amount of data. I paid around $100 to scrape the historical daily data for the Russell 2000. Getting intraday data for any sizable time period would cost an astronomical amount of money due to the way IEX charges for their data.

For forex, the situation is a bit better - you can get information from Dukascopy/Tickstory for free. For cryptocurrency there is data available from Binance.

There is also QuantConnect, which is an online IDE/system for developing manually coded trade bots. They have historical data for a wide range of financial products and it's all available for free. The catch is that the data can't leave their system, which eliminates the possibility of training any sort of advanced machine learning model.

Edit: for these types of questions I would recommend searching /r/algotrading

Jugglerofworlds··on In Further Praise of Dependent Types
Do dependent types really eliminate the need for macros? As far as I can tell you cannot pattern match against values of type Type in dependent languages, so I don’t see how you could generate a JSON parser without some kind of reflection.
Jugglerofworlds··on In Further Praise of Dependent Types
It might sound silly, but the scene hierarchy and inspector in Unity is actually quite good and very useful for game development. Sometimes I find myself missing having it in other programming systems as well.

Jugglerofworlds··on A new form of brain stimulation relieved severe depression in a small study
As someone who has schizoaffective disorder, I take offense to your assertion that psychosis=murderer. Your claim only serves to perpetuate the stigma attached to psychosis, when the disease itself is already bad enough. Coincidentally, I happened to have taken ketamine infusions for depression long before I was diagnosed with schizoaffective.
Jugglerofworlds··on No person who was born blind has ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia
I have aphantasia and schizophrenia. I've never had a visual or auditory hallucination, but I have had plenty of delusions and cognitive dysfunction. Ever since learning about aphantasia I've wondered if it has protected me from these types of hallucinations. Maybe someone should run a study on this?

A common post among the people over at /r/schizophrenia is that the so called negative symptoms of schizophrenia (anhedonia, apathy, reduced social drive, cognitive impairment, etc) are just as bad if not worse than the positive symptoms (hallucinations and delusions). Unfortunately the negative symptoms are not adequately treated by any medicine and are in fact made worse (!) by medication. This is probably the number one reason why schizophrenics quit their medication - the medications are simply so shitty that people would rather risk the positive symptoms than experience worse negative symptoms.

There's no good research directions for new schizophrenia medications either. Schizophrenia research certainly isn't discussed (or have funds raised for it) as much as Alzheimer's research despite the fact that 3.5 million people in the US have it, and it affects people at a much younger age.

Edit: Before starting medication I noticed some visual disturbances related to schizophrenia often known as sensory gating deficits. I would get an overload of visual sensory information to the point where I would notice nearly every detail in my visual range simultaneously (that's the best way I can explain it). At times it was actually quite beautiful since the whole world would pop out in vivid color. However as soon as motion was introduced it quickly became overwhelming.

Jugglerofworlds··on Lots of Job Hunting, but No Job, Despite Low Unemployment
God forbid you make a small mistake on a technical interview or don't know the "trick" to answer a leetcode question. Any small mistake is enough to crucify you, and previous employment experience is ignored in favor of basing 100% on technical interviews.
Jugglerofworlds··on Unity Engine ToS change makes cloud-based SpatialOS games illegal
I've done a lot of work with multiplayer on Unity. Running a version of the game in the Unity engine as a server is necessary if you want your game to be authoritative to prevent cheating. Fortunately my game uses a custom server that I wrote, but this will be a huge hit to pretty much everyone else.
Jugglerofworlds··on A Week in Xinjiang’s Absolute Surveillance State
The Chinese government are even integrating Han Chinese "mothers" into Uighur families: https://www.apnews.com/9ca1c29fc9554c1697a8729bba4dd93b

What we're seeing is a complete cultural genocide by the Chinese government. The propaganda, cameras, and security noted in the article are just the tip of the iceberg. The US government should be hitting China hard with the Magnitsky Act for these human rights violations.

Jugglerofworlds··on A bone-marrow transplant treated a patient’s leukemia – and his schizophrenia
Actually I already take naltrexone, but in ultra low doses. I'm combining it with low dose buprenorphine, which is basically the only medication that has done anything for my depression. I will see if I can get an appointment with a specialist about PANDAs. I have known about PANDAs for a while, but it was dismissed very early since I'm an adult. Now that I've failed pretty much every treatment it might be worth it to take a second look.
Jugglerofworlds··on A bone-marrow transplant treated a patient’s leukemia – and his schizophrenia
Yes, there are likely multiple factors here, both physical and learned behaviors. I've had some access to cutting edge treatments since I live in Boston, which is probably the #1 place in the world for psychiatry research. Over the years I've cobbled together a regimen that sort of works, but it's basically a band-aid solution and I can tell that it's not 100% effective.

Nowadays I feel normal ish about 15% of the time, meh about 50%, and somewhat depressed 35%. I've tried multiple medications from pretty much every category of medications, including many off-label treatments.

Jugglerofworlds··on A bone-marrow transplant treated a patient’s leukemia – and his schizophrenia
I tried prescription memantine, both the generic and XR formulations. The brain fog startup side effect never went away for me, so I had to quit. I've never found a supplement that has actually done anything.

Jugglerofworlds··on Did I just waste 3 years?
I completely agree. Every time I see one of these posts bemoaning their sales stats, the game inevitably looks bad. The genre that this game is in is completely saturated, so nobody is going to spend their money on crap when something that looks 10x better is available. While the indie scene is is definitely now over-saturated, the real problem here is the lack of honest feedback to the developer.
